INTRODUCTION: Medical buildings are complex indoor environments with heterogeneous room functions, occupancy patterns and HVAC (especially ventilation) requirements. Although radon monitoring methodologies are applied across workplaces, healthcare facilities differ from residential buildings in air exchange, operational schedules and functional zoning. This study investigated indoor radon concentration in Romanian medical buildings and assessed whether current monitoring assumptions, including residential-derived seasonal correction factors, adequately reflect observed exposure patterns.

Artificial Intelligence (AI), in general, refers to the machines (or computers) that mimic "cognitive" functions that we associate with our mind, such as "learning" and "solving problem". New biomarkers derived from medical imaging are being discovered and are then fused with non-imaging biomarkers (such as office, laboratory, physiological, genetic, epidemiological, and clinical-based biomarkers) in a big data framework, to develop AI systems. These systems can support risk prediction and monitoring. This perspective narrative shows the powerful methods of AI for tracking cardiovascular risks

We conducted a study on building-related respiratory disease and associated social impact in an office building with water incursions in the northeastern United States. An initial questionnaire had 67% participation (888/1,327). Compared with the U.S. adult population, prevalence ratios were 2.2-2.5 for wheezing, lifetime asthma, and current asthma, 3.3 for adult-onset asthma, and 3.4 for symptoms improving away from work (p < 0.05). Two-thirds (66/103) of the adult-onset asthma arose after occupancy, with an incidence rate of 1.9/1,000 person-years before building occupancy and 14.5/1,000 per

An employee of a private disposal company suffered a finger needlestick injury while collecting waste at curbside from a building containing medical offices. Subsequent inspection of the contents of the garbage bags revealed the presence of used syringes and unsheathed needles. The Ministry of the Environment has developed a regulation and guidelines for the handling and disposal of biomedical waste including needles and other sharps. These specify that approved carriers and receivers are required for disposal; properly decontaminated waste is considered non-hazardous solid waste and can go to

OBJECTIVE: Although trainees often receive adequate training in operative vocal fold (VF) injections under anesthesia, their experience with awake in-office injections is usually more limited. This is due to the increased skill required and a lack of patient tolerance. Multiple models exist to help trainees become more familiar with awake percutaneous VF injections, but there is a paucity of simulation models for the awake peroral approach. We designed and built a low-cost, easily replicated model to allow trainees to develop some of the fundamental skills required to perform in-office peroral

BACKGROUND: We report on a workplace cluster of Bell's palsy that occurred within a four-month period in 2011 among employees of a three-story office building in Lima, Peru and our investigation to determine the etiology and associated risk factors.
FINDINGS: An outbreak investigation was conducted to identify possible common infectious or environmental exposures and included patient interviews, reviews of medical records, an epidemiologic survey, serological analysis for IgM and IgG antibodies to putative Bell's palsy-inducing pathogens, and an environmental exposure assessment of the office

BACKGROUND: Limited data are available on locations of public access defibrillation programs across communities in the United States, despite their widespread presence. Our goal was to determine publicly available AED locations of large businesses in a mixed urban-rural county. We then compared our survey results to a NC state-mandated AED registry and the county's emergency medical dispatch center AED registry.
METHODS: We conducted structured phone surveys of all large businesses (>19 employees) and select small businesses (healthcare, government, childcare, educational, and religious organ

Force health protection (FHP) is defined as "the prevention of disease and injury in order to protect the strength and capabilities" of any service population. FHP was the foundational principal of the US Public Health Service (USPHS). President John Adams' signing of An Act for Sick and Disabled Seamen on July 16, 1798, marked the first dedication of US federal resources to ensuring the well-being of US civilian sailors and Naval service members. On January 4, 1889, President Cleveland enacted the USPHS Commissioned Corps, creating the world's first (and still only) uniformed service dedicate

BACKGROUND: Telemedicine services encompass a diverse range of fields, including telenursing, telepharmacy, telerehabilitation, teleradiology, telepsychiatry, and others. Despite these advancements, low-income countries still lag in telemedicine adoption. The study aimed to assess the knowledge of telemedicine among students and clinicians while gaining deeper insights into clinicians' experiences-how telemedicine has influenced their practice, the challenges they face, and the opportunities it holds for a resource-limited country like Pakistan.
METHODS: This study followed an explanatory seq

A multidisciplinary team assessed five patients who alleged chronic medically unexplained multiorgan system symptoms described by idiopathic environmental intolerance allegedly triggered by exposure to solvents used in membrane roofing repair work on an office building. The event precipitated an incident of mass psychogenic illness (MPI). Treating physicians diagnosed irritant-associated vocal cord dysfunction (IVCD) and reactive airways disease syndrome (RADS) resulting from exposure. The authors conducted medical, psychological, and industrial hygiene evaluations. Air monitoring data for tot

BACKGROUND: Overdoses and deaths from synthetic opioids grew sharply in the past decade. Most people with opioid use disorder (OUD) do not receive recommended evidence-based treatment: nationally, 72% to 87% of people who need OUD treatment do not receive medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Little is known about practice teams' experiences with home, office, and telehealth induction for MOUD, particularly in primary care.
METHODS: We conducted semistructured interviews with primary care clinicians and staff from February through September 2023 to understand experiences providing MOUD v

Driving the overdose epidemic, a significant proportion of adult and adolescent patients seen in neurology practice and hospital settings has substance use disorder. Fortunately, there are effective treatments available, in particular for opioid addiction. Some elements of treatment can be delivered directly in medical office-based settings, while others are best provided from within specialized addiction treatment facilities. In this article, we review the nature of substance use disorders, and the various treatment approaches that can be utilized to stabilize patients and facilitate their bu

The topic of building related illness came into the public's eye as a major health issue in the mid 1970s, when several cases of pneumonia were found to be associated with an infectious agent in Philadelphia. This agent was subsequently found to be a gram-positive bacterium known as Legionella pneumoniae. During the ensuing 30 years, a myriad of symptom constellations, disorders, clinical syndromes and illnesses have been attributed to indoor living or working environments. Over time, there appeared to be no limit to claims of building related illness, and it was "reported" that almost any kin

Background The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), a flagship program of the Government of India, is addressing the malnutrition, health, and development needs of young children, pregnant and lactating women, and adolescent girls for more than four decades. Although the program has been implemented for the past four decades, it could not bring the expected outcomes in terms of reducing malnutrition. The program's limited success can be attributed, among others, to insufficient skills of the program staff and inadequate convergence with the existing nutrition programs implemented thro

Emergency departments (EDs) are increasingly sites of interaction between clinicians and federal immigration authorities. Recent shifts in federal enforcement policy have intensified these encounters. Patients now more frequently arrive in custody, accompanied by immigration enforcement officers who may assert control over communication, decision-making, or access to patients. These circumstances introduce challenges for maintaining standard clinical practice. Clinicians may encounter situations in which patient confidentiality, informed consent, and independent medical judgment are difficult

Several consultation stations have been set up in an unfinished stone building. My team is made up of a Kenyan physician assistant (called clinical officer), a Kenyan medical student, and me, a US physician assistant student. We are huddled around a small worn-out square table. A middle-aged woman and her two children, ages 2 and 6, approach the table. They have traveled 2 miles to the medical camp. The children, covered in dust, are emaciated with protruding abdomens, dry skin, and congested noses. The clinical officer (CO) conducts a brief interview in Swahili, the Kenyan national language.

BACKGROUND: We developed and implemented a structured clinical documentation support (SCDS) toolkit within the electronic medical record, to optimize patient care, facilitate documentation, and capture data at office visits in a sleep medicine/neurology clinic for patient care and research collaboration internally and with other centers.
METHODS: To build our SCDS toolkit, physicians met frequently to develop content, define the cohort, select outcome measures, and delineate factors known to modify disease progression. We assigned tasks to the care team and mapped data elements to the progres

This study is a retrospective analysis of 139 cases of falls and/or jumps from heights, examined at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Maryland during the 6-year period from 1987 through 1992. A total of 56 individuals (40%) committed suicide by jumping from heights and 72 (52%) fell accidentally. Of the 72 accidental falls, 36 (50%) were work related. Two cases involved victims of homicide and the causes in nine cases remain undetermined. Of the 139 cases examined, 89 individuals (64%) fell or jumped from buildings, 29 (21%) from bridges, 15 (11%) from ladders, and 6 (4

There is a general separation between medical and business education, despite the substantial intersection of these fields in hospital and industry settings. This separation hinders medical innovators, who rarely have opportunities to see how entrepreneurial concepts apply to the translation of medical innovation. To address this, the Office of Entrepreneurship at Mayo Clinic Florida provides experiential entrepreneurial training through an internal pitch competition: the alligator tank (AT). This study evaluates the impact and efficacy of the first seven years of the AT. Key metrics include a
