[Linkage of claims data with data from epidemiological cancer registries: possibilities and limitations in the German federal states].

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for the reuse of research data in accordance with the so-called FAIR principles. This would allow researchers to conduct projects on a broader data basis and to investigate new research questions by linking different data sources. OBJECTIVES: We explored if nationwide linking of claims data from statutory health insurances (SHI) with data from population-based cancer registries can be used to obtain additional information on cancer that is missing in claims data and to assess the validity of SHI tumour diagnoses. This paper focu

Using administrative health data to ascertain ovarian cancer treatment information in Australia: a validation against medical records.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding patterns of cancer care is important for improving patient safety and reducing inequity. Linked administrative datasets offer a cost-efficient alternative to medical chart abstraction, but the information may not be as comprehensive and accurate. Our aim was to determine the validity of using linked administrative data to identify ovarian cancer primary treatment in Australia, using data from medical charts for comparison. METHODS: We used data from the Ovarian cancer Prognosis And Lifestyle study, a national prospective cohort study including women diagnosed with ov

From the Ligurian HIV Network to an European Framework for HIV Surveillance and Control.

The Ligurian HIV Network, based on HL7 CDA r2, is an Italian regional infrastructure for HIV surveillance and control. To expand this network to a European level, the alignment with the EHDS and the EEHRxF, which standardize EHR data exchange, becomes essential. EU-funded projects like XpanDH are developing HL7 FHIR IGs to support this framework. Therefore, the extension of the Ligurian HIV Network requires an architectural rethink, with the introduction of the HL7 FHIR format instead of CDA r2, ensuring compliance with European standards.

Accuracy of death certification and hospital record linkage for identification of incident stroke.

BACKGROUND: There is little information on the validity of using record linkage with routinely collected data for case ascertainment of stroke in large population-based studies in the UK. We examined the accuracy of these routine record linkage approaches for identifying incident stroke cases in a large UK population-based study, the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC)-Norfolk cohort. METHODS: We examined a sample of hospital records of incident stroke cases identified by linkage with two routine data sources, death certificates and a national hospital record linkage system

Population-Level Data Linkages in Worldwide Twin Research Resources.

Twin registries are foundational resources for research in behavioral and medical genetics, epidemiology, and public health. Over several decades, successive international reviews have documented their expansion in number, geographical coverage, phenotypic scope, molecular profiling, and participation in large-scale collaborations. This overview first traces this development through previous global overviews of twin registries and then examines record linkage as an increasingly important feature of contemporary twin research. Drawing on diverse twin registries, twin cohorts, multi-cohort resou

Automating the Integration of Longitudinal Clinical Trial Data Using REDCap.

Efficient data exchange is crucial for accelerating clinical research and reducing duplicative efforts. Inconsistencies in field names and coded values (e.g., male = 1, female = 0) across CSV files hinder interoperability and reuse for secondary analyses. We successfully integrated the multicenter, longitudinal Depression DC clinical trial data into REDCap using the API, by metadata driven R workflow for automated data integration.

Linking Electronic Health Records for Multiple Sclerosis Research: Comparative Study of Deterministic, Probabilistic, and Machine Learning Linkage Methods.

BACKGROUND: Data linkage in pharmacoepidemiological research is commonly employed to ascertain exposures and outcomes or to obtain additional information on confounding variables. However, to protect patient confidentiality, unique patient identifiers are not provided, which makes data linkage across multiple sources challenging. The Saudi Real-World Evidence Network (SRWEN) aggregates electronic health records from various hospitals, which may require robust linkage techniques. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate and compare the performance of deterministic, probabilistic, and machine learning (

Federated healthcare record server--the Synapses paradigm.

The delivery of healthcare relies on the sharing of patient information between those who are providing for the care of the patient and this information is increasingly being expressed in terms of a 'record'. Further, it is desirable that these records are available in electronic form as Electronic HealthCare Records. As it is likely that patient records or parts of records will be stored in many different information systems and in the form of disparate record architectures, uniform access to patient records would be problematic. This paper presents an overview of the Synapses computing envir

Increased rural vehicular mortality rates: roadways with higher speed limits or excessive vehicular speed?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess whether higher roadway speed limits and excessive vehicular speed were contributing factors to increased rural vehicular mortality rates in the State of Alabama. METHODS: During a 2-year period from January 2001 through December 2002, data were collected from Alabama police crash reports and EMS patient care reports. Police crash reports and EMS patient care reports were linked utilizing an imputational methodology. Vehicular speeds were estimated speeds extracted from police crash reports. Vehicular speeding was defined as estimated speeds g

Privacy-Preserving Linkage of Distributed Pseudonymised Datasets in a Virtual European Rare Disease Platform.

Secondary use of data for research purposes is especially important in rare diseases (RD), since, per definition, data are sparse. The European Joint Programme on Rare Diseases (EJP RD) aims at developing an RD infrastructure which supports the secondary use of data. Significant amounts of RD data are a) distributed and b) available only in pseudonymised format. Privacy-Preserving Record Linkage (PPRL) concerns the linking of such distributed datasets without disclosing the participant's identities. We present a concept for linking a PPRL Service to the EJP RD Virtual Platform (VP). Level 1 (r

Patient Record Linkage for Data Quality Assessment Based on Time Series Matching.

BACKGROUND: Huge amounts of data are collected by healthcare providers and other institutions. However, there are data protection regulations, which limit their utilisation for secondary use, e.g. RESEARCH: In scenarios, where several data sources are obtained without universal identifiers, record linkage methods need to be applied to obtain a comprehensive dataset. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we had the objective to link two datasets comprising data from ergometric performance tests in order to have reference values to free text annotations for assessing their data quality. [Encryption technique for linkable anonymizing].

Linkage of different records such as health insurance claims or medical records for the purpose of cohort studies or cancer registration usually requires matching with personal names and other personally identifiable data. The present study was conducted to examine the possibility of performing such privacy-sensitive procedures in a "linkable anonymizing" manner using encryption. While bidirectional communication entails encryption and deciphering, necessitating both senders and receivers sharing a common secret "key", record linkage entails only encryption and not deciphering because research

Use of record linkage between a statewide genetics service and a Birth Defects/Congenital Malformations Register to determine use of genetic counselling services.

The Birth Defects/Congenital Malformations Register of the Victorian Department of Human Services contains detailed, confidential information on over 2,000 babies born with a birth defect each year in Victoria, Australia, representing approximately 3% of the annual number of births. For 1991 and 1993, the type of anomaly was categorised as warranting a high, moderate, or low need of referral for genetic counselling, depending on risk of recurrence and possible genetic cause. The Victorian Clinical Genetics Service at the Murdoch Institute, Melbourne, offers free, centralised genetic counsellin

A database perspective of the transition from single-use (ancillary-based) systems to integrated models supporting clinical care and research in a MUMPS-based system.

The Composite Health Care System (CHCS), a MUMPS-based hospital information system (HIS), has evolved from the Decentralized Hospital Computer Program (DHCP) installed within VA Hospitals. The authors explore the evolution of an ancillary-based system toward an integrated model with a look at its current state and possible future. The history and relationships between orders of different types tie specific patient-related data into a logical and temporal model. Diagrams demonstrate how the database structure has evolved to support clinical needs for integration. It is suggested that a fully in

Use of surveillance systems for occupational cancer: data from the Danish National system.

In Denmark the 1970-census population has been followed up for deaths, emigrations, and cancer cases during the ten-year period 1970-80. The linked register allows tabulation of cancer incidence by occupation, however no information is available on specific exposures. It is therefore an indication of the validity of the register that classic associations known from in-depth epidemiological studies are found also in the register. Examples are cancer of the lip in farmers, RR = 1.85, and fishermen, RR = 3.17; and cancer of the nasal cavities and sinuses in skilled furniture makers, RR = 12.25. T

Adapting historical clinical genetic test records for anonymised data linkage: obstacles and opportunities.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic fibrosis (CF) heterozygotes (also known as 'carriers') are people who have one mutated copy of the CFTR gene. Research into the health risks of CF carriers has been limited by a lack of large cohorts tested for CF carrier status, but routine clinical testing identifies CF carriers in the population. Such test records additionally contain large amounts of clinical information, making them a valuable research resource to not only identify CF carriers in the population but also to provide additional data not found elsewhere. METHODS: Following governance approvals, we adapte

De-identified Bayesian personal identity matching for privacy-preserving record linkage despite errors: development and validation.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological research may require linkage of information from multiple organizations. This can bring two problems: (1) the information governance desirability of linkage without sharing direct identifiers, and (2) a requirement to link databases without a common person-unique identifier. METHODS: We develop a Bayesian matching technique to solve both. We provide an open-source software implementation capable of de-identified probabilistic matching despite discrepancies, via fuzzy representations and complete mismatches, plus de-identified deterministic matching if required. We

Creating a Powerful Platform to Explore Health in a Correctional Population: A Record Linkage Study.

We used record linkage to create a data repository of health information of persons who were federally incarcerated in Ontario and Canada. We obtained records from 56,867 adults who were federally incarcerated between January 1, 1998 and December 31, 2011 from the Correctional Service of Canada; 15,248 records belonged to individuals residing in Ontario, Canada. We linked these records to the Registered Persons Database (RPDB) which contained records from 18,116,996 individuals eligible for health care in Ontario. Out of 56,867 OMS records, 22,844 (40.2%) were linked to the RPDB. Looking only
