A breast cancer screening educational intervention targeting medical office staff.

There is persistent evidence that breast cancer screening techniques remain under-utilized. While physicians cite lack of time as a barrier to the provision of preventive services, nurses and other medical office staff are in an ideal position to educate women and motivate adherence to screening recommendations. This paper describes the design, implementation and process evaluation of a breast cancer screening educational program targeting primary care medical office staff. This intervention was conducted in two Washington State counties as part of a larger community organization study. The PR

HCV seroprevalence in dialysis patients, their relatives and medical staff.

HCV infection has emerged as a significant problem for both dialysis patients and medical staff. We report the data found in a dialysis center in Bucharest for hepatitis B, C and HIV infections. Single random samples collected from 133 dialysis patients give a seroprevalence of 91.7% for HCV antibodies in contrast with the absence of seropositives between medical staff members. To assess the relative risk for HCV transmission by sexual or casual contacts we investigated also 15 samples from the relatives of patients. One spouse and the child were found positive. The differences in the epidemio

Staff utilisation of an electronic medical record during nursing handover.

BACKGROUND: Electronic medical records (EMRs) are widely implemented to improve information access, patient safety and care coordination. However, less is known about how EMRs are used in routine clinical processes such as nursing handover. Understanding how EMRs influence handover practices is important, given the central role of handover in continuity of care and patient safety. METHOD: An exploratory mixed-methods comparative case study using a cross-sectional survey design was conducted within a large multi-site public healthcare organisation in Victoria, Australia. An organisation-wide s

Role of non-medical staff in screening for breast cancer.

In a feasibility study of mass population screening for breast cancer by clinical examination and mammography the ability of non-medical staff (nurses and radiographers) to act as primary screeners was compared with that of medical staff (surgeons and radiologists). In 240 women with cancer the rate of detection of the disease by the non-medical staff was comparable to that of the medical staff, although the non-medical staff detected more cancers by mammography alone than did the medical staff. The rate of detection by surgeons and particularly nurses was lower in women without symptoms than

Pain during medical abortion: predicting factors from gynecologic history and medical staff evaluation of severity.

BACKGROUND: We studied whether it is possible to predict severity of pain during medical abortion. We also studied how well medical staff recognizes the pain perceived by these women. STUDY DESIGN: Fifty-four women (mean age 26 years, range 18-42 years) undergoing medical abortion before the 64th day of gestation (mean 47 days, range 32-63 days) were asked to estimate their menstrual pain and the pain perceived during medical abortion by visual analogue scale (VAS). Both the intensity and unpleasantness of pain were evaluated separately. The nurses observing the women undergoing medical abort

Fatigue of oncological patients - incompatible perspectives of patients and medical staff.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related fatigue is a complex syndrome and the most frequently reported complaint, especially during treatment. Sometimes a large discrepancy in patient fatigue estimations between the patients themselves and medical staff is observed. The main goal of this study was to compare fatigue from the patients' and the medical staff's perspectives. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: The methods used included author-designed surveys for both the patient (questions about fatigue, intensity, causes and influence on life constructed mostly in the form of numerical rating scales) and the medic

Two cases of accidental transmission of hepatitis C to medical staff.

Two medical doctors (a 38-year-old male and a 25-year-old female) were admitted to our department with jaundice. They had injured themselves with, respectively, a scalpel and a needle contaminated with anti-hepatitis C virus antibody-positive blood, at 2 and 1.5 months, respectively, prior to admission. They were both suffering from clinically typical acute hepatitis. The polymerase chain reaction showed that hepatitis C RNA and anti-hepatitis C virus antibody were transiently positive in the male doctor, while serum transaminase levels were transiently abnormal. In the female doctor, hepatiti

Investigation of Vitamin D levels in medical staff in a dental clinic.

AIMS: Recently, Vitamin D deficiency is pandemic now. The main reason of vitamin D deficiency is inadequate exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D level in nutrients is low and it can be ineffective to meet the daily requirements. Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin by ultraviolent radiation. In the present study, the authors aimed to investigate serum 25(OH) D levels of the medical staff working in different positions in the Faculty of Dentistry. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 51 dentists, 28 dental assistants, 11 secretaries, and 10 nurses working in the Faculty of Dentistry, Erciyes University
