Ageing is associated with an increased risk of adverse drug reactions. This calls for great care and diligent follow up when prescribing medication to older patients. Yet, this is seldom the case and the proportion of older people taking five or more medications has quadrupled from 12% to 49% in the last 20 years. Certain medications are riskier than others. Those with anticholinergic effects are of particular concern. Adverse effects of anticholinergics include dry mouth, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, urinary retention, blurred vision, tachycardia and neu

BACKGROUND: The OR generates over 30% of a healthcare facility's total waste, with more than 60% classified as regulated medical waste (RMW). Municipal waste (MW) is commonly incorrectly classified as RMW, resulting in unnecessary costs and environmental burden. As such, this pilot study aimed to determine if interventions that provide visual cues for waste classification and improve ergonomics in the operating room (OR) can improve waste sorting accuracy.
METHODS: In groups of two to four, participants were tasked with quickly solving tangram puzzles while periodically given simulated medica…

In Germany, around 425,400 Mg of specially healthcare-related waste is generated annually, of which 2.4% (10,100 Mg) is infectious (EWC 18 01 03*). Its hazardous nature creates organizational and safety challenges for healthcare facilities and disposal companies, while composition and recycling potential remain largely unknown. However, standardized regulations enable systematic investigation. Aim of this study is to evaluate the potential of X-ray transmission combined with machine learning (ML) for material identification and recycling of infectious waste, while simultaneously assessing the

We draw on the concept of dignity to consider the ethics of the disposal of amputated limbs. The ethics of the management and disposal of human tissue has been subject to greater scrutiny and discussion in recent years, although the disposal of the limbs often remains absent from such discourses. In light of the recent UK controversy regarding failures in the medical waste disposal and the stockpiling of waste (including body parts), the appropriate handling of human tissue has been subject to further scrutiny. Although this scandal has evoked concern regarding procurement and supply chain iss…

We studied 260 workers in the cotton waste utilization industry and 310 "blue-collar" control workers from nondusty industries in the same geographic area of the United States by respiratory symptom questionnaire and by pre- and postshift spirometry. We excluded 75 cotton workers and 75 control workers from statistical analysis because of prior hazardous occupational exposures. Plant-wide, 8-hour time-weighted average exposures ranged from 0.28 mg/m3 to 7.80 mg/m3. The overall prevalence of symptoms compatible with byssinosis was 5.9% in cotton workers and 4.7% in the controls. Cotton workers

BACKGROUND: The recent Ebola outbreak led to the development of Ebola virus disease (EVD) best practices in clinical settings. However, after the care of EVD patients, proper medical waste management and disposal was identified as a crucial component to containing the virus. Category A waste-contaminated with EVD and other highly infectious pathogens-is strictly regulated by governmental agencies, and led to only several facilities willing to accept the waste.
METHODS: A pilot survey was administered to determine if U.S. medical waste facilities are prepared to handle or transport category A …

Microwave sterilization technology is an environmentally friendly non-incineration disposal method for medical waste. The core sterilization technology of "microwave sterilization, steam makes the system heat up quickly" was adopted to build a microwave sterilization screw conveyor system that can continuously and dynamically type microwave sterilization. The platinum resistance temperature sensor is used to measure the temperature of the steam at the outlet of the system and the temperature of the material at the outlet. The microwave sterilization process for medical waste was studied on the…

This research studies the potentiality of recovering alternative fuel from the pyrolysis of syringe waste (SW) and saline bottle waste (SBW). Plastic-based medical wastes can cause severe environmental and human health damage if not properly managed. Lab-scale experiments were conducted in a batch-type fixed-bed reactor by fluctuating the temperature within the 0-600°C range at an interval of 50°C. The effect of temperature on product yield has been investigated. Various properties of pyrolytic oil extracted from SW and SBW, such as density, kinematic viscosity, pour point, boiling point, and …

Given the occupational risks of hazardous waste workers, this study was conducted to explore possible differences in medical surveillance practices among blue and white collar workers. Demographic and medical surveillance data were collected from 636 white collar and 206 blue collar trainees, enrolled in health and safety training courses. Overall, 4.5% of the trainees reported being ill or injured because of hazardous substances. Significant differences (P < .0001) were noted between groups; blue collar trainees were more likely to have been ill or injured. Differences also existed for medica

BACKGROUND: Patients frequently end up with unused medications due to non-adherence, excessive supply, treatment changes, or early discontinuation. However, patients' views on unused medications and potential waste minimization interventions remain underexplored in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to explore patients' views and experiences regarding unused medications and potential solutions for reducing the amount of unused medications in homes.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews (n = 26) were conducted with adult patients who visited a health facility and were using presc

Medical plastic waste (MPW) has become a major environmental concern due to its massive production in clinics and hospitals, and the limited recycling options, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, thermochemical technologies represent a promising approach to simultaneously reduce and valorize this waste by producing three main streams of value: a gaseous, a liquid, and a solid stream. In this study, the thermochemical conversion of four representative categories of MPW (non-woven medical textiles, FFP2 face masks, Pasteur pipettes, and natural latex gloves) was experimental

This article is a discussion on the non-contact automated characterization framework for infectious healthcare waste by Vielsack et al. (2026). Two critical scientific and operational boundaries are critically analyzed while recognizing their pioneering combination of X-ray transmission (XRT) and machine learning in field conditions. First, single-energy XRT technology limitations hinder fine-grained polymer discrimination; overlapping attenuation profiles cannot differentiate high-value recyclable polymers from problematic polyvinyl chloride (PVC), risking contamination of downstream mechanic

Five types of odor-emitting exhaust gases from medical waste were selected, and their adsorption capacity and desorption efficiency were investigated using activated carbon. The selected gases included polar gases (hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3)) and non-polar gases (acetaldehyde (AA), methyl mercaptan (MM), and trimethylamine (TMA))). Commercial activated carbon with a specific surface area of 2276 m2/g was used as the adsorbent. For the removal of odor from medical waste, we investigated: (1) the effective adsorption capacity of a single gas (<1 ppm), (2) the effect of the adsorbed…

The COVID-19 pandemic has exerted great shocks and challenges to the environment, society and economy. Simultaneously, an intractable issue appeared: a considerable number of hazardous medical wastes have been generated from the hospitals, clinics, and other health care facilities, constituting a serious threat to public health and environmental sustainability without proper management. Traditional disposal methods like incineration, landfill and autoclaving are unable to reduce environmental burden due to the issues such as toxic gas release, large land occupation, and unsustainability. While…

Pyrolysis of certain medical waste materials was studied using thermogravimetric analyzer coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR). Pyrolysis characteristics of three common materials were discussed. The pyrolysis of absorbent cotton turned out to be the most concentrative, followed by medical respirator and bamboo stick. From TG and DTG curves, pyrolysis of these three materials occurred in single, two and three stages respectively. Evolved volatile products from all these three materials included 2-butanone, benzaldehyde, formic acid, acetic acid, hydrocarbon, carbon di…

Global health resources have expanded quickly and global health has improved in many places. However, such progress has resulted in a demand for the management and safe disposal of medical waste, particularly in many developing countries which still lack adequate facilities and regulatory framework to deal with their medical waste. This study analyzes decarbonization and circular economy principles of sustainable medical waste management to find optimal solutions for reducing environmental impact and enhancing system efficiency. A novel hybrid MCDM model which combines DEMATEL-ANP is applied f…
