When Doctors Don't Tie: Hierarchical Medicalization, Reproduction, and Sterilization in Brazil.

Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork among black women, medical personnel, and activists in Brazil, this article highlights the implications of hierarchical medicalization. I show that the prioritization of particular forms of medicalized contraception for women located differentially in society enables different relations, political positions, and mobility. Denial of a tubal ligation in favor of modern reversible contraceptives, in a context of inequitable distribution, can perpetuate social stratification. This work contributes to literature exploring the complexity of medicalization and its re

Skin aesthetics: the influence of beauty ideals on the medicalization of appearance.

Throughout history, skin has been one of the most visible markers of identity, and its appearance has been shaped by cultural norms of beauty, health, and social status. While skin ideals have changed depending on the era and social context, each period developed its own concept of proper appearance against which people were socially evaluated. In ancient cultures, a smooth and even complexion would be a sign of health and high social standing; in the Middle Ages, it was interpreted with moral and religious terms; and in the Renaissance, the visual ideal of luminous, harmonious skin was establ

My Horse Is My Therapist: The Medicalization of Pleasure among Women Equestrians.

Pink t-shirts that proclaim "My horse is my therapist" are for sale in a wide variety of horse-sport catalogues. Literature on the healing power of human-nonhuman animal encounters and the practice of a variety of animal-assisted therapy programs, such as hippotherapy and equine-facilitated therapy, show dramatic growth over the last 30 years. Less attention is paid to the role that horse-human interactions may play in more popular accountings of well-being and impairment among a sample of everyday riders. Analysis of 50 lifecycle narratives, collected from accomplished but nonprofessional equ

Medicalization, wish-fulfilling medicine, and disease mongering: toward a brave new world?

Western societies are characterized by a growing medicalization of life events, such as pregnancy, aging, or even death. Three concepts -medicalization, wish-fulfilling medicine, and disease mongering- are key in understanding the current practise of Medicine. Quite surprisingly, not a single study has addressed the relationship between all three of these concepts. The term medicalization expanded under the open-ended concept of health developed by the World Health Organization in 1946. One of the consequences of medicalization is the transition from patients to clients. Physicians are under i

[Accessed through sex: the medicalization of male sexuality at two different moments].

The scope of this article is to reflect upon the medicalization of male sexuality based on the counterpoint between two distinct historical processes. The first of these is the major trend towards intervention in male sexuality which occurred in the early twentieth century in Brazil as a result of syphilis and the broader campaign against venereal disease. The second concerns the medicalization of sexuality through the focus on erectile dysfunction and the creation of a new pharmacology of sex which has become inevitable with the transition to the twenty-first century. This contrast enables us

The Incomplete Medicalization of Obesity: Physician Office Visits, Diagnoses, and Treatments, 1996-2014.

OBJECTIVES: Despite increased awareness of obesity-related health risks and myriad treatment options, obesity still affects more than one-third of persons in the United States and is a substantial public health problem. Studies show that physicians play a key role in obesity prevention and treatment. The objective of this study was to examine the extent to which obesity is diagnosed and treated at the level of patient-physician interaction. METHODS: We used data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS), a nationally representative data set of US physician office visits. We est

Short- and long-term outcomes after silastic medicalization laryngoplasty: are arytenoid procedures needed?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate short- and long-term vocal outcomes after medialization laryngoplasty (ML) using a silastic implant in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). DESIGN AND METHODS: Prospective study of consecutive patients undergoing ML with silastic (MLS) diagnosed with UVFP from 2009 till 2012 and with at least 9 months follow-up. Pre- and post-treatment maximum phonation time (MPT) and voice handicap index (VHI) scores were compared to assess the impact of ML on these outcomes. Patients with high vagal lesions or lateralized vocal folds (very low MPT) were compared with

The Dietary Journey in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Grounded Theory From Medicalization to Empowerment.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Grounded theory develops theoretical frameworks from systematic analysis of patient experiences. Translational research converts findings into clinical tools. Despite dietary management being crucial in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), no framework exists for understanding patients' dietary journey phases. We explored how IBD patients psychologically and socially experience dietary changes over time and developed a clinical assessment tool. METHODS: Using grounded theory methodology with translational tool development, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 25 adult

"Down Syndrome is Not a Curse": parent Perspectives on the Medicalization of Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Potential clinical interventions to mitigate or eliminate symptoms of Down syndrome (DS) continue to be an active area of pre-clinical and clinical research. However, views of members of the DS community have yet to be fully explored. METHODS: We conducted a survey with parents/caregivers of people with DS (n = 532) to explore interest in potential therapeutic approaches during fetal development or childhood that may improve neurocognition and modulate the DS phenotype. We qualitatively analyzed open-ended responses. RESULTS: Some respondents rejected the development of therapies

Medical diagnosis of dyslexia in a Swedish elite school: A case of "consecrating medicalization".

Based on qualitative data of an upper-secondary school in Sweden's primary elite community, Djursholm, I propose how medical diagnosis of students as dyslexics contributes to consecrating them by offering a short cut to successful performance, while at the same time reproducing differences between social classes. The study suggests how students that do not score top can be labeled dyslexic and the social and moral consequences of that. I introduce the concept of "consecrating medicalization" in order to discriminate between the effects of medical diagnosis of members of different social classe

The Medicalization of Poverty in the Lives of Low-Income Black Mothers and Children.

Scholars are beginning to use the concept medicalization of poverty to theorize how the United States spends large amounts of money on illnesses related to poverty but invests much less in preventing these illnesses and the conditions that create them (e.g., economic insecurity, housing instability, continuous exposure to violence, and racism). This study examines the connection between poverty, disease burden and health-related costs through the in-depth interviews of 86 Black mothers living in neighborhoods with high levels of violence on the South Side of Chicago. The rippling costs of pove

Stratified medicalization rerouted: Lesbian women's turn to IVF as pragmatic overmedicalization amid stratified reproduction.

Lesbian women's growing use of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) to pursue parenthood and their frequent marginalization compared to heterosexual couples in the process exemplify stratified medicalization. In China, where access to ARTs and sperm banks is restricted to married heterosexual couples, intended lesbian mothers have to rely on underground or overseas ART markets and face ongoing challenges in parenting, reflecting broader patterns of stratified reproduction. This paper examines the puzzling and underexplored prevalence of in vitro fertilization (IVF) among Chinese lesbian w

Military Sexual Trauma: Gender, Military Cultures, and the Medicalization of Abuse in Contemporary America.

Sexual violence is a serious problem within armed services. This article explores intra-service rape in branches of the U.S. military from the 1990s to the present. The article begins by establishing the parameters of the crisis of sexual abuse within the U.S. armed services. Second, it explores systematic failures to recognize forms of suffering. Victim-survivors in the military are vulnerable to military-specific obstacles to reporting their abuse and being believed. Attention is paid to differences by gender and sexual orientation. Third, it analyses the medicalization of suffering in the m

Effectiveness of a On-site Medicalization Program for Nursing Homes With COVID-19 Outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: Nursing homes are highly vulnerable to the occurrence of COVID-19 outbreaks, which result in high lethality rates. Most of them are not prepared to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic. METHOD: A coordinated on-site medicalization program (MP) in response to a sizeable COVID-19 outbreak in 4 nursing homes was organized, with the objectives of improving survival, offering humanistic palliative care to residents in their natural environment, and reducing hospital referrals. Ten key processes and interventions were established (provision of informatic

Neurasthenia, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and the Medicalization of Worry in a Vietnamese Psychiatric Hospital.

This article examines two forms of the medicalization of worry in an outpatient psychiatric clinic in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Biomedical psychiatrists understand patients' symptoms as manifestations of the excessive worry associated with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Drawing on an ethnopsychology of emotion that reflects increasingly popular models of neoliberal selfhood, these psychiatrists encourage patients to frame psychic distress in terms of private feelings to address the conditions in their lives that lead to chronic anxiety. However, most patients attribute their symptoms to

The motion of resistance: radical autonomy and the medicalization of the mundane in Shoojit Sircar's Piku.

This article evaluates Shoojit Sircar's Piku [1] within the geriatric medical canon, examining its subversion of traditional aging tropes that equate old age with inevitable decline, loss of autonomy, and passive dependency. Centered on the protagonist Bhashkor Banerjee's chronic constipation, the narrative explores the medicalization of the mundane, where both bowel motion and bodily movement become intertwined sites through which elderly agency is negotiated. Through a gerontological lens, the film portrays the domestic space as a site of conflict between the autonomy of the aging subject an
