Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2023eng
Poor adherence reduces the effectiveness of osteoporosis treatment, resulting in lower bone mineral density and subsequently higher fracture rates. Reliable and practical tools are needed to measure medication adherence. The aim of this systematic review was to find osteoporosis medication adherence measurement tools and assess their applicability. Osteoporosis adherence measurement tools and all their related keywords in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched on 4 December, 2022. After excluding duplicates in the Endnote software, two researchers independently inve

Background: Adverse effects of antiseizure medications (ASMs) remain one of the major causes of non-adherence. Cosmetic side effects (CSEs) are among the most commonly reported side effects of ASMs. In this context, alopecia is one of the CSEs that has a high intolerance rate leading to poor therapeutical compliance. Methods: We performed a literature review concerning alopecia as a secondary effect of ASMs. Results: There are 1656 individuals reported with ASM-induced alopecia. Valproate (983), lamotrigine (355), and carbamazepine (225) have been extensively reported. Other ASMs associated wi

Numerous reports have emphasized the association between priapism and the ingestion of psychotropic medication. Clinicians are becoming increasingly aware of this association and its subsequent severe morbidity. Review of the literature reveals that medications possessing alpha-adrenergic blocking properties are most frequently associated with priapism. These medications include trazodone, several antipsychotics, and the antihypertensive agent, prazosin. Awareness of these associations and an appreciation of potentially serious consequences of this disorder may assist clinicians in choosing ps

A 69-year-old Caucasian male with a 25-year history of paranoid schizophrenia was brought to the emergency department because of violence toward the staff in his nursing facility. He was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and was admitted to the behavioral health unit for medication stabilization. History included a five-year state psychiatric hospital admission and nursing facility placement. Because of poor cognitive function, the patient was unable to corroborate medication history, so the pharmacy student on rotation performed an in-depth chart review. The review revealed a transcrip

OBJECTIVE: Drug-related problems (DRPs), which encompass medication errors (MEs), adverse drug reactions and adverse drug events (ADEs), represent significant challenges in healthcare settings. While medication safety has been extensively studied in hospitals and primary care settings leading to development of improvement strategies, there is limited understanding of these issues within prison healthcare environments. This knowledge gap is concerning given that prisoners often have complex medication needs due to higher rates of chronic physical and mental ill health and substance use disorder

BACKGROUND: Wearable devices (WDs) have evolved beyond simple fitness trackers to sophisticated health monitors capable of measuring vital signs, such as heart rate and blood oxygen levels. Their application in health care, particularly medication management, is an emerging field poised to significantly enhance patient adherence to treatment regimens. Despite their widespread use and increasing incorporation into clinical trials, a comprehensive review of WDs in terms of medication adherence has not been conducted.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive scoping review to evalu

BACKGROUND: Chronic migraine is a highly debilitating condition that is often difficult to manage, particularly in the presence of medication overuse headache. Drugs targeting the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), or its receptor have shown promising results in treating this disorder.
METHODS: We searched Pubmed and Embase to identify randomized clinical trials and real-world studies reporting on the use of medication targeting the calcitonin gene-related peptide in patients with chronic migraine.
RESULTS: A total of 270 records were identified. Nineteen studies qualified for the quali

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a rare, severe debilitating condition from unknown causes. It is characterized by nonhealing exposed bone in a patient with a history of antiresorptive or antiangiogenic agents in the absence of radiation exposure to the head and neck region. The first case of MRONJ was reported in the early 2000s. Diagnostic criteria for MRONJ was developed by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) based on pharmacological history as well as clinical and radiographic features. Antiresorptive medications such as bisphosphonate

A number of effective maintenance medication options exist for bipolar disorder (BD) and these are regarded as the foundation of long-term treatment in BD. However, nonadherence to medication is common in BD. For example, a large data base study in the United States of America (USA) showed that approximately half of patients with BD were nonadherent with lithium and maintenance medications over a 12 month period. Such nonadherence carries a high risk of relapse due to the recurrent nature of the illness and the fact that abrupt cessation of treatment, particularly lithium, may cause rebound de

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia is a rare, but potentially fatal adverse effect of antipsychotic drug (APD) use. Although the opposite condition, hyperthermia, has been researched extensively in the context of the malignant antipsychotic syndrome, little is known about hypothermia due to APDs.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to review the literature on hypothermia in the context of APD use, and formulate implications for research and clinical care.
METHODS: A systematic search was made in PubMed and Ovid Medline.
RESULTS: The literature search yielded 433 articles, including 57 original case descriptio

This literature review explores the range and nature of medication adherence interventions tested with older adults. The unique needs of older adults require specifically designed and tailored interventions. Low medication adherence rates among some elderly contribute to inadequate pharmacological management of illnesses. Searches were conducted to identify randomized controlled trials of medication adherence; computerized databases, journal hand searches, and ancestry searches yielded 63 studies published between 1977 and 2005 where participants' mean age was > 60 years. Interventions were ca

Paediatric medication errors remain a major and preventable cause of patient harm worldwide. Children are particularly vulnerable to medication-related adverse events because of weight-based dosing requirements, age-dependent pharmacokinetics, off-label medication use, communication limitations, and the need for complex drug preparation and administration processes. High-risk settings such as neonatal intensive care units, emergency departments, oncology services, and transitions of care are associated with particularly high rates of prescribing and administration errors. This narrative review

BACKGROUND: Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a movement disorder that causes involuntary, repetitive body movements and is commonly seen in patients who are on long-term treatment with antipsychotic medications. However, several other classes of medications with different mechanisms are also associated with TD.
METHODS: We conducted a PubMed search using keywords and combined word searches that involved medication-induced TD, as well as agents that are associated with causing or are used to treat medication-induced TD. We attempted to include as many recent (publication date of 2015 and later) arti

CONTEXT: Adverse drug reactions and drug-drug interactions are common. Medication-induced morbidity might be prevented through the documentation of medicines in the medical record and review of the medical record before new medications are prescribed.
PRACTICE PATTERN EXAMINED: Documentation and review by primary care physicians of patient use of prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs (OTCs), nutritional supplements, and herbal and other alternative treatments.
DATA SOURCE: A stratified random sample of 1802 internists and family practitioners from the American Medical Association Physic

In this article we review the empirical literature on weight gain associated with neuroleptic drug use. Weight gain, which appears to be associated with an increase in appetite, is variable but likely to be larger initially and then plateau. Clozapine and low-potency phenothiazines are associated with the largest gains and molindone with weight loss, but the mechanism is not known. Amantadine and fenfluramine may reverse weight gain to some degree. Dietary fat seems to play an important role in obesity, and research is needed to increase the data base and elucidate possible mechanisms. Studies

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a debilitating neurological disorder that presents significant management challenges, resulting in underdiagnosis and inappropriate treatments, leaving patients at risk of medication overuse (MO). MO contributes to disease progression and the development of medication overuse headache (MOH). Predicting which migraine patients are at risk of MO/MOH is crucial for effective management. Thus, this systematic review aims to review and critique available prediction models for MO/MOH in migraine patients.
