[Anesthesia and resuscitation in Arabo-Islamic medicine: analytic study through Ibn Sina].

Nervous system anatomy knowledge acquired by arabo-islamic physicians enabled them to know its physiology represented by its excitability and its conductibility, and to understand pain physiology. Ibn Sina in his book entitle "The Canon of Medicine" precise anesthetic drugs and their side effects. Among these anesthetic means there were opium and ice. Ibn Sina distinguished organic pain and psychogenic pain. He used sedative and antalgic and soporific drugs in treatment of some psychologic diseases as melancholia. Moslem physicians were the first to use cold water to treat superficial burns. A

On occasion of 800th anniversary of birth of Ibn al-Nafis--discoverer of cardiac and pulmonary circulation.

With Ibn Sina great Canon came the "golden age of Arabic medicine", almost to its peak. Since the beginning of XI century, when Ibn Sina died, until the middle of XIII century, when creative was Ibn al-Nafis, medical science continues to develop and progress, and had its brilliant minds. For that time characteristic is the fact that neither the strong authority as Avicenna was could paralyze the progress of medical science. Three hundred years before Paracelsus, in Cairo appears a medical scientist who dares to touch the authority of Ibn Sina-Avicenna in the infallibility of Canon-"Medical Bib

Socio-political aspects of mental health practice with Arabs in the Israeli context.

Since the 1948 establishment of the Israeli state, an event described by Arab peoples as "Al-Nakbah" (catastrophe), the Arab minority in Israel has experienced oppression, trauma and social exclusion; they feel defeated, disempowered and poorer. There are huge gaps in quality of life between Arab and Jewish Israelis. Such social inequities, as well as other issues such as polygamy, have been identified as risk factors for psychological distress. This situation puts the Israeli Arab, like other post-colonial peoples, in an attitude of ambivalence towards modern mental health services. On the on

Bridging the language gap in healthcare: assessing physicians' knowledge of simplified medical jargon in Arabic and their attitudes toward patient-physician communication training in Lebanese medical education.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Effective communication skills are crucial for strengthening the patient-physician relationship and ensuring high-quality patient care. While Arabic is Lebanon’s official and most widely spoken language, medical education is primarily conducted in English or French. This language barrier may hinder effective communication between doctors and patients from diverse educational backgrounds. This study aims to evaluate how the use of simplified medical terminology and the Arabic mother tongue affects physician-patient communication by assessing physicians’ knowledge of A

Psychometric evaluation of the Arabic brief forms of the diabetes distress scale in Egyptian patients with type II diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes distress is highly prevalent among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and is consistently associated with poor self-care, medication nonadherence, and suboptimal glycemic control, leading to worse outcomes and reduced quality of life. Despite its clinical significance, routine screening is often overlooked in primary care and family medicine settings due to limited time and resources. Brief tools, such as the 2-item (DDS-2) and 4-item (DDS-4) Diabetes Distress Scales, offer practical alternatives to longer measures; however, validated Arabic versions are lackin

Psychiatry and the Palestinian population.

Some key issues pertaining to Palestinian psychiatry are described. Bearing in mind the geographical location and history of the Palestinian population, the development of psychiatry needs to be seen in the context of the Arab world, on the one hand, and of Israel, on the other. In the Middle Ages, Arab culture and medicine were more developed than in Europe. Aspects of general and forensic psychiatry on the West Bank and Gaza are outlined. Issues pertaining to the death penalty, suicide and suicide bombers are also discussed. The biblically-described relationship between the Arab and Jewish p

Maqua (therapeutic burn) as an indicator of underlying disease.

The origin and nature of the maqua (the Arabic therapeutic burn) is presented together with our clinical experience of patients previously treated by this traditional method. Maquas are small deep burns inflicted in areas either in proximity to a diseased organ or in points related traditionally to the original basic problem. These relationships may be rooted in historical ties between old Arab medicine and traditional Oriental, antique Egyptian, and Greco-Roman medicines. Maquas alone only rarely present a threat to the patient, but in many cases they may serve as an indicator of the original

Effect of Prebiotic Dietary Supplement Acacia senegal on Hormonal and Metabolic Markers in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Patients: A Pilot Study.

Background The most prevalent endocrine condition affecting women of reproductive age is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which is linked to a variety of metabolic abnormalities. Although the pathogenesis of PCOS is not fully understood, it is known that oxidative stress, altered gut microbiome, and increased gonadotrophin-releasing hormone play a significant role. Gum arabic (GA) is an edible, dried, gummy exudate from the Acacia senegal tree, well-known for its prebiotic and antioxidant effects. The main objective of the study was to assess the changes in hormonal and metabolic profiles i

Avicenna's approach to the treatment of rabies in the perspective of current medicine.

The current study explores Avicenna's approach to rabies management, which is documented in his seminal work, The Canon of Medicine. His diagnostic strategies, therapeutic principles, and suggested medicinal plants against rabies are elucidated. Moreover, we use the current literature to shed light on the extent of alignment of Avicenna's views and therapies with contemporary medical practice. Some parts of his views, such as the emphasis on wound hygiene and the use of herbal compounds with antiviral and immunomodulatory properties, are in agreement with modern knowledge. Our study summarizes
