Vitiligo, also known as baras in Unani medicine, causes patches of depigmented skin due to the loss of melanocytes. According to ancient Unani scholars, factors like excessive phlegm in the blood and weakened color-controlling power were believed to be the cause. This study dives into the historical insights of luminaries like Majūsī and Hakim Akbar Arzānī, alongside modern medical understanding. It explores the pathophysiology, epidemiology, and clinical features of vitiligo, while also addressing confusing definitions, dietary influences, and demographic patterns. We take a close look at the

Ethnic herbal medicine originated from the medical knowledge accumulated by ethnic groups in their struggle against disease and harsh environments; the history of each ethnic group's development through long-term coexistence and competition with nature is, in itself, a history of medicine. In northern Pakistan, herbal plants thrive and are readily available, and medicinal plants exhibit an exceptionally rich biodiversity. Yunnan's unique natural environment and biodiversity have fostered a wealth of ethnic medicine and cultural resources, making it a treasure trove of global medicine and cultu

OBJECTIVE: Conventional treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) like 5alpha-reductase inhibitors and invasive surgery are associated with some obvious side effects. Conversely, evidence, though limited, has shown that alternative medicines are safer and have potential to improve the lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and quality of life in addition to improving sexual dysfunction in patients with BPH. The current article aimed to include an overview of BPH, different ways of its management, and particularly its appreciation in Greco-Arab (Unani) system of medicine, one of the altern

The rising episodes of deadly heat waves have intensified the need for a heat protection strategy. The Unani system of medicine offers ways to stay healthy in different climatic conditions. Hence, this article aims to discuss the applicability of health protection measures suggested by Unani scholars for hot weather conditions in the light of current researches. The manual literature survey of classical Unani texts was conducted to collect information on health safety measures for hot weather. A substantial search of scientific databases such as "Google Scholar" and "Medline" for proposed meas

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Unani remedies are considered safe and can be utilized as a healthcare resource due to the adverse effects of conventional pharmaceuticals. For instance, Donepezil, used to treat alzhemier's disease exerts many adverse effects such as dizziness, vertigo, dryness of mouth. Similarly, Memantine used to slow the neurotoxicity involved in alzhemier's disease also exerts adverse effects like vomiting, tremors and sleep disturbance. Over sixty percent of drugs are derived from synthetic basis, highlighting the potential benefits of natural Unani treatments as a safer

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a chronic, autoimmune, T-cell-mediated inflammatory disease with an "onset-remission-recurrence" pattern, and is managed symptomatically, therefore the need for treatment is usually lifelong.
PRIMARY STUDY OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Majoon and Tila Baras-e-Aswad, two combination formulations, consisting of herbal, mineral, and animal drugs (antioxidants, anti-psoriatic, antihistaminic, antipruritic, and skin protection with healing activities), prescribed for the treatment of Baras-e-Aswad, having a plaque psoriasis-like diagnosis in Unani

Qatoor Ramad (QR) is an ophthalmic formulation of Unani medicine. It is reputed for its beneficial effects in the treatment of the inflammatory conditions of the eyes. The effect of QR eye drops was studied by a double-blind, randomized, prospective, placebo-controlled clinical trial, conducted in 70 patients (20-60 yrs) suffering from different types of conjunctivitis, namely mucopurulent, phlyctenular and allergic conjunctivitis. Local application of two drops (3-4 times/day) of QR was applied to the affected eyes for up to 14 days. Patients were examined at the time of diagnosis and after 2

BACKGROUND: Ḍu'f al-Kabid (hepatic insufficiency) is a condition extensively described in classical Unani medicine, where impaired hepatic function arises due to structural or temperamental changes in the liver. One of the classical diagnostic markers of this condition is Bawl Ghusālī, a distinctive urinary appearance resembling the washings of raw meat, attributed to a failure of the liver's discriminative faculty (Quwwat Mumaiyyaza). While traditional Unani texts emphasize this sign, its correlation with modern hepatic pathology remains underexplored in clinical literature.

BACKGROUND: Interest in the antioxidant and antidiabetic activity of natural products are growing vastly in the modern world. Thin layer chromatography-bioautography-mass spectroscopy (TLC-bioautography-MS) plays an important role in chemico-biological screening of natural sources. TLC combined with 2, 2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical, α-amylase and α-glucosidase bioassay were used to evaluate antioxidant and antidiabetic activities, respectively, in different extracts of Citrullus colocynthis (Hanzal), a well-known traditional Indian Unani medicinal plant.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has emerged as a global health crisis, affecting a quarter of the world's population, and is anticipated to become a leading cause of liver transplantation and hepatocellular carcinoma by 2030. Conventional pharmacotherapy for NAFLD remains imperfect. In this context, Unani medicine offers a promising alternative for managing NAFLD.
OBJECTIVE: This review aims to compile information on Unani medications used for the treatment of NAFLD, aiming to provide evidence of their efficacy and delve into the mechanisms through which these Unani drug

BACKGROUND: The Unani system of medicine is rooted in the Theory of Humors, where health is maintained through the balance of four bodily fluids (blood, phlegm, bile, and black bile). Its treatment approach is holistic, encompassing Ilaj bil Tadbeer (Regimental therapy), Ilaj bil Ghida (Dietotherapy), Ilaj bil Dawa (Pharmacotherapy), and Ilaj bil Yad (Surgery). Huqna (enema) is a key non-pharmacological regimen therapy in Unani medicine, used to cleanse the bowels and restore humoral balance. Its roots trace back to ancient Greek physicians like Hippocrates and Galen.
