Progress toward poliomyelitis eradication--eastern Mediterranean region, 1988-1994.

In 1988, the Regional Committee of the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) of the World Health Organization (WHO) adopted a resolution to eradicate poliomyelitis from the region by the year 2000 (1). Since this goal was established, substantial progress toward polio eradication has been achieved using three major strategies: 1) achieving and maintaining high coverage with at least three doses of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV3); 2) implementing supplementary vaccination activities, including National Immunization Days (NIDs), to rapidly interrupt poliovirus transmission; and 3) developing sensiti

Epidemiological Challenges and Health Disparities in the Eastern Mediterranean Region: A Region in Crisis.

Background: The World Health Organization's (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) is marked by socioeconomic diversity, political instability, displacement, and environmental risks. With nearly 745 million people across 22 countries, the region faces a complex "triple burden" of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), communicable diseases (CDs), and injuries. Objective: This paper provides an updated overview of the epidemiological landscape of the EMR by linking current disease burdens with socioeconomic, behavioural, environmental, and health system determinants. It highlights regional dispari

Surveillance and Control of Antibiotic Resistance in the Mediterranean Region.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the most relevant problems in the healthcare: the growth of resistant microorganisms in healthcare settings is a worrisome threat, raising length to stay (LOS), morbidity and mortality in those patients. The importance of the antibiotic resistance and its spread around the world, gave rise to the activation of several surveillance systems, based especially on the collection of laboratory data to local or national level. The objective of this work is to carry out a review of the scientific literature existing on the topic and scientific activities related to surv

Epidemiology, diagnosis and control of leishmaniasis in the Mediterranean region.

The leishmaniases are a widespread and medically important group of parasitic diseases, some of which pose a serious health threat in communities throughout the Mediterranean basin. In 1993, a joint, collaborative study of the Mediterranean leishmaniases was initiated by scientists from Israel, Turkey, Portugal and the Netherlands. The aim of this project was the development of a multi-component approach to the successful control of all forms of leishmaniasis, with special emphasis on the more severe, visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The need for highly sensitive and accurate new tools to facilita

Risk factors for canine leishmaniasis in an endemic Mediterranean region.

Human visceral leishmaniasis is an emergent/re-emergent parasitic zoonotic disease in Europe caused by Leishmania infantum, with domestic dog as its main reservoir host. This study presents the results of a canine epidemiological survey in a mediterranean region where human and canine leishmaniasis (CanL) are endemic - Portugal. The main goal was to identify risk factors, which can be relevant for Leishmania infection control. The national survey was carried out in January 2009 with a screening of 3974 dogs from all 18 districts of mainland Portugal. Direct Agglutination Test was used for the

Insights and imperatives on antimicrobial resistance in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become entrenched across the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR)- undermining our health, our development and our security. Despite progress in developing AMR national action plans (NAP), strengthening infection prevention and control (IPC), and reporting AMR and consumption data to WHO's surveillance system, the AMR burden continues to increase. In 2021 alone, bacterial AMR was directly responsible for nearly 100 000 sepsis-related deaths in the Region -more than 1 in 6 of all sepsis deaths. These stark figures show that AMR is a systemic crisis requiring an
