Mutualistic interactions between plants and bees are essential for tropical forests. This study analyzes the spatiotemporal variation in the pollen niche of Melipona scutellaris, a generalist stingless bee native to the Atlantic Forest. Pollen was collected over 17 months at four replicates in the Michelin Ecological Reserve, Northeastern Brazil. Samples were processed using standard acetolysis, and ecological indices were analyzed. Sixty-one pollen types were found in this bee diet, with foraging concentrated on a few of them. Despite its generalist behavior, the concentration of pollen colle

Weeds pose a problem, infesting areas and imposing competition and harvesting difficulties in agricultural systems. Studies that provide the use of alternative methods for weed control, in order to minimize negative impacts on the environment, have intensified. Native flora represents a source of unexplored metabolites with multiple applications, such as bioherbicides. Therefore, we aimed to carry out a preliminary phytochemical analysis of crude extracts and fractions of Miconia auricoma and M. ligustroides and to evaluate these and the isolated metabolites phytotoxicity on the growth of the

PREMISE: Medullary bundles, which are vascular bundles in the pith, have evolved multiple times. However, their functional significance remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated how medullary bundles are involved in the vascular architecture and hydraulic function in a tropical root climber, Adelobotrys scandens (Melastomataceae) to understand the functional significance of this vascular architecture in a wet-adapted root climber species as compared to what is known about medullary bundles in the lineages in hydraulically limited arid/saline environments.
METHODS: We used light microsc

A refinery located on the slopes of a mountain range in the city of Cubatão (SE-Brazil) is the main source of sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) in the region. For this reason, the refinery replaced a system in which energy was produced from crude oil combustion in boilers with a system of energy and vapor co-generation in a thermoelectric power plant fueled by natural gas. The aim of this study was to investigate the responses of Tibouchina pulchra to the fuel switching. Saplings planted in pots were distributed throughout monitoring sites around the polluting source (sites I, II, III and IV) and in a si
