Specifying the core network supporting episodic simulation and episodic memory by activation likelihood estimation.

It has been suggested that the simulation of hypothetical episodes and the recollection of past episodes are supported by fundamentally the same set of brain regions. The present article specifies this core network via Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE). Specifically, a first meta-analysis revealed joint engagement of expected core-network regions during episodic memory and episodic simulation. These include parts of the medial surface, the hippocampus and parahippocampal cortex within the medial temporal lobes, and the temporal and inferior posterior parietal cortices on the lateral surfa

Ventral parietal cortex contributions to episodic memory precision.

BACKGROUND: Functional imaging studies examining the neural mechanisms enabling memory precision for episodic information relate that function to enhanced activation in the ventral parietal cortex (VPC). However, the VPC role in mnemonic precision remains ambiguous due to the correlative, rather than causative, nature of evidence provided by functional neuroimaging. We therefore aimed to neuroanatomically assess the VPC involvement in episodic memory retrieval requiring precision regarding stimulus details vs. its contribution to more general remembering. METHODS: Stroke patients with right h

Rodents' episodic-like memory: concepts, ageing, neurodegeneration, future.

Episodic memory (EM), traditionally defined as the conscious recollection of what, where, and when events occurred, was long considered uniquely human due to its reliance on autonoetic awareness. However, behavioural criteria allow memory assessment based on observable features, enabling the study of EM-related processes in non-human species and leading to the concept of episodic-like memory (ELM) in animal models. We review conceptual advances and methodological challenges in ELM research, focusing on rodent models that provide mechanistic insights into neural circuits and molecular pathways

The Hippocampus Links Episodic Memory and Bodily Awareness.

PURPOSE: Episodic autobiographical memory does not occur in isolation from the body: every remembered event was once encoded from a first-person perspective. Yet whether the hippocampus, long recognized as the canonical substrate of memory, also underpins the embodied self has remained unknown. METHOD: We combined structural T1-weighted MRI with behavioral assessments of episodic memory (Logical Memory delayed recall) and bodily awareness (ARSQ 2.0 Somatic Awareness subscale) in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and healthy comparison groups to test whether hippocampal volume pred

From Correlation to Causation: Understanding Episodic Memory Networks.

Episodic memory, our ability to recall past experiences, is supported by structures in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) particularly the hippocampus, and its interactions with fronto-parietal brain regions. Understanding how these brain regions coordinate to encode, consolidate, and retrieve episodic memories remains a fundamental question in cognitive neuroscience. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) methods, especially transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), have advanced episodic memory research beyond traditional lesion studies and neuroimaging by enabling causal investigations through ta

The effects of episodic context on memory integration.

Information encountered in different events, such as people and objects, can be interlinked in memory. Such memory integration supports novel inferences about the world. This study investigates the role of episodic context on memory integration in two experiments using an associative inference task. Participants encoded events with overlapping (AB and BC) and non-overlapping associations (XY) presented in the same or different episodic contexts. Inference performance across events (AC) was tested in the absence (Experiment 1) and in the presence (Experiment 2) of the encoding context. Our data

Transformed Neural Pattern Reinstatement during Episodic Memory Retrieval.

Contemporary models of episodic memory posit that remembering involves the reenactment of encoding processes. Although encoding-retrieval similarity has been consistently reported and linked to memory success, the nature of neural pattern reinstatement is poorly understood. Using high-resolution fMRI on human subjects, our results obtained clear evidence for item-specific pattern reinstatement in the frontoparietal cortex, even when the encoding-retrieval pairs shared no perceptual similarity. No item-specific pattern reinstatement was found in the ventral visual cortex. Importantly, the brain

[The assessment of episodic memory: theory and practice].

Episodic memory refers to a system which stores personally experienced events located in time and in space. It is characterized by autonoetic consciousness allowing a subject to be aware of his/her own identity throughout subjective time and to perceive the present as both a continuation of his/her past and as a prelude to his/her future. Current studies of episodic memory should take into account all these features. However, most episodic memory tests are restricted to memory performance and do not really measure episodic memory. In this article, after defining the terms of context and states

The relationship between working memory and episodic memory disorders in transient global amnesia.

In a previous study, we investigated the relationship between the disorders of both episodic memory and working memory in the acute phase of transient global amnesia (TGA). Since executive functions were spared, another dysfunction may be responsible for the binding and maintenance of multimodal informations and contribute to the encoding disorders observed in some patients [Quinette, P., Guillery, B., Desgranges, B., de la Sayette, V., Viader, F., & Eustache, F. (2003). Working memory and executive functions in transient global amnesia. Brain, 126, 1917-1934.]. The aim of this present study w

Remembering what you did: Episodic memory for self-actions.

Episodic memory stores not only passively experienced events, but also one's own past actions and decisions. Despite their critical role for learning about the world and about the self, little is known about how such memories for self-actions are stored and retrieved. We argue that memory for self-actions plays three key roles in the cognitive economy: it scaffolds memory for environmental events, enables learning from delayed feedback, and allows individuals to learn about their own abilities and preferences. A synthesis of evidence from behaviour and psychopathology is consistent with an org

The influence of social content on episodic memory retrieval.

Episodic memory helps facilitate navigation of the social world. Yet, whether social content is prioritized in episodic memory is unclear. Testing whether social elements are prioritized when retrieving multielement episodes used for social and nonsocial inferences, online volunteers encoded episode triplets comprising a location, activity, and a clique (i.e., social group) that related to a cue that was either a person or an object. Subsequent associative memory tests in all tasks revealed some form of enhanced retrieval for activity pairings with cliques. Additionally, social cover task cont

What episodic memory reveals about the default mode network.

Episodic memories showcase the complexity of internal thought: they bind together people, places, and events into coherent narratives, and they carry a subjective quality that sets them apart from other mental representations. In this review, I argue that episodic memory provides a powerful lens for understanding the functional organization of the default mode network (DMN). Recent research reveals that memory-related functions of the DMN are organized along at least two key dimensions- content and specificity. Distinct areas support memory for different types of content (e.g., object, spatial

Active navigation enhances children's spatial but not episodic memory.

This paper uses a Yoked experimental design to investigate the selective advantage of active spatial navigation in 4- to 10-year-old children. Participants were presented with a map game in which they were asked to find the shortest way for a monster to get across town while collecting its five monster friends on the way. Active control was associated with better recall for path length and the area between paths, whereas no differences were observed for the number of corners. Further, active navigation did not enhance episodic memory. Our results indicate that the benefits of active control du

MILD TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY IMPAIRS EPISODIC MEMORY IN RATS.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is the most common type of traumatic brain injury. Symptoms following mTBI fall into physical, emotional, sleep, and cognitive categories, with memory deficits being a commonly documented sequelae. Whereas many animal models of mTBI exist, relatively few studies have examined the cognitive deficits of mTBI with human-like cognitive tasks. The Wayne State University Closed Head Weight Drop Model recapitulates critical physical elements of sport-related concussions and trauma-based mTBI. However, until now, this model has not previously been evaluated using a h

Positive and negative emotional contexts unevenly predict episodic memory.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the recognition of faces with neutral expressions differs when they are encoded under different emotional contexts (positive, negative or non-emotional). The effects of the emotional valence context on the subsequent memory effect (SME) and the autonomic responses were also examined. Twenty-eight participants performed a betting-game task in which the faces of their virtual opponents were presented in each trial. The probability of winning or losing was manipulated to generate positive or negative contexts, respectively. Additionally, the partic

Episodic memory and autonoetic consciousness: a first-person approach.

Episodic memory is identified with autonoetic consciousness, which gives rise to remembering in the sense of self-recollection in the mental re-enactment of previous events at which one was present. Autonoetic consciousness is distinguished from noetic consciousness, which gives rise to awareness of the past that is limited to feelings of familiarity or knowing. Noetic consciousness is identified not with episodic but with semantic memory, which involves general knowledge. A recently developed approach to episodic memory makes use of 'first-person' reports of remembering and knowing. Studies u

Episodic memory and remembering in adults with Asperger syndrome.

A group of adults with Asperger syndrome and an IQ-matched control group were compared in remember versus know recognition memory. Word frequency was also manipulated. Both groups showed superior recognition for low-frequency compared with high-frequency words, and in both groups this word frequency effect occurred in remembering, not in knowing. Nor did overall recognition differ between the two groups. However, recognition in the Asperger group was associated with less remembering, and more knowing, than in the control group. Since remembering reflects autonoetic consciousness, which is the

Episodic memory differences in social and non-social contexts.

Humans use existing knowledge to predict and recall events. As a social species, it has been argued that humans preferentially process and recall social information. Individuals then should be better at using prior knowledge of actors' character traits to predict and remember their behaviour in social contexts compared to predicting and remembering trait-consequence associations in non-social contexts. To test this hypothesised social episodic memory advantage, we modified a social episodic memory paradigm to include a social and non-social condition. 215 participants (18-65 years; 43% female)

Episodic and semantic memory contributions to imagination and creativity.

The ability to generate novel creative ideas (divergent thinking) is closely linked with our ability to imagine novel future events (episodic simulation). Here, we employed an individual differences approach to examine whether divergent thinking and episodic simulation are differentially associated with episodic and semantic retrieval ability. In response to object word cues, participants generated meanings and definitions (semantic memory), remembered a past event (episodic memory), imagined a novel future event (episodic simulation), or generated novel uses (divergent thinking). Replicating

Episodic memory neural mechanisms: patterns, connectivity, and developmental dynamics.

Episodic memory enables individuals to encode, store, and retrieve personally experienced events in their spatiotemporal contexts. This review synthesizes current cognitive neuroscience findings and proposes an integrative framework highlighting three key dimensions. First, distinct subregions of the medial temporal lobe (e.g., hippocampus, perirhinal cortex) and large-scale neocortical networks (e.g., ventral and dorsal frontoparietal networks, default mode network) play specialized roles in episodic memory processing. Second, episodic memory representations vary in both content and format, e
