Short-term and long-term memory deficit following intracarotid Amytal injection: further support for the memory consolidation hypothesis.

To test the three main hypotheses of the human amnesic syndrome (encoding, consolidation, retrieval), we designed an original protocol for memory assessment under Amytal that included, in addition to a retrograde memory measure, both short-term and long-term anterograde memory measures. Twenty epileptic patients with SEEG-confirmed unilateral temporal lobe foci were given right and left injections on successive days. Only the long-term memory measure for material presented under Amytal was significantly related to the presence of a temporal contralateral epileptogenic focus, even if it was ass

ERABiLNet: enhanced residual attention with bidirectional long short-term memory.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) causes slow death in brain cells due to shrinkage of brain cells which is more prevalent in older people. In most cases, the symptoms of AD are mistaken as age-related stresses. The most widely utilized method to detect AD is Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Along with Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, the efficacy of identifying diseases related to the brain has become easier. But, the identical phenotype makes it challenging to identify the disease from the neuro-images. Hence, a deep learning method to detect AD at the beginning stage is suggested in this wo

Sleep deprivation specifically impairs short-term olfactory memory in Drosophila.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep is crucial to memory consolidation in humans and other animals; however, the effect of insufficient sleep on subsequent learning and memory remains largely elusive. DESIGN: Learning and memory after 1-day sleep deprivation (slpD) was evaluated using Pavlovian olfactory conditioning in Drosophila, and locomotor activity was measured using the Drosophila Activity Monitoring System in a 12:12 light-dark cycle. RESULTS: We found that slpD specifically impaired 1-h memory in wild type Canton-S flies, and this effect could persist for at least 2 h. However, alternative stre

Dissociable neural mechanisms supporting visual short-term memory for objects.

Using visual information to guide behaviour requires storage in a temporary buffer, known as visual short-term memory (VSTM), that sustains attended information across saccades and other visual interruptions. There is growing debate on whether VSTM capacity is limited to a fixed number of objects or whether it is variable. Here we report four experiments using functional magnetic resonance imaging that resolve this controversy by dissociating the representation capacities of the parietal and occipital cortices. Whereas representations in the inferior intra-parietal sulcus (IPS) are fixed to ab

Genetic influences on language impairment and phonological short-term memory.

It has been known for some years that specific language impairment (SLI), an unexpected failure to acquire age-appropriate language skills, is highly heritable. However, molecular genetic studies have been hampered by the heterogeneity of the disorder and the predominant lack of clear genotype-phenotype relationships. We review recent studies suggesting that a better understanding of the genetics of SLI might emerge if we move away from clinical criteria for diagnosis to look instead at a theoretically based quantitative and cognitive measure of the phenotype: a test of phonological short-term

Visual short-term memory for overtly attended objects during infancy.

We investigated limitations in young infants' visual short-term memory (VSTM). We used a one-shot change detection task to ask whether 4- and 8.5-month-old infants (N = 59) automatically encode fixated items in VSTM. Our task included trials that consisted of the following sequence: first a brief (500 ms) presentation with a sample array of two items, next a brief (300 ms) delay period with a blank screen, and finally a test array (2,000 ms) identical to the sample array except that the color of one of the two items is changed. In Experiment 1, we induced infants to fixate one item by rotating

Visuospatial short-term memory and dorsal visual gray matter volume.

Visual short-term memory (VSTM) is an important cognitive capacity that varies across the healthy adult population and is affected in several neurodevelopmental disorders. It has been suggested that neuroanatomy places limits on this capacity through a map architecture that creates competition for cortical space. This suggestion has been supported by the finding that primary visual (V1) gray matter volume (GMV) is positively associated with VSTM capacity. However, evidence from neurodevelopmental disorders suggests that the dorsal visual stream is more broadly vulnerable and atypical volumes o

Visual short term memory related brain activity predicts mathematical abilities.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests visual short-term memory (VSTM) capacity and mathematical abilities are significantly related. Moreover, both processes activate similar brain regions within the parietal cortex, in particular, the intraparietal sulcus; however, it is still unclear whether the neuronal underpinnings of VSTM directly correlate with mathematical operation and reasoning abilities. The main objective was to investigate the association between parieto-occipital brain activity during the retention period of a VSTM task and performance in mathematics. METHOD: The authors measure

Visual short-term memory binding deficit in familial Alzheimer's disease.

Long-term episodic memory deficits in Alzheimer's disease (AD) are well characterised but, until recently, short-term memory (STM) function has attracted far less attention. We employed a recently-developed, delayed reproduction task which requires participants to reproduce precisely the remembered location of items they had seen only seconds previously. This paradigm provides not only a continuous measure of localization error in memory, but also an index of relational binding by determining the frequency with which an object is misplaced to the location of one of the other items held in memo

Prosodic Similarity Effects in Short-Term Memory in Developmental Dyslexia.

Children with developmental dyslexia are characterized by phonological difficulties across languages. Classically, this 'phonological deficit' in dyslexia has been investigated with tasks using single-syllable words. Recently, however, several studies have demonstrated difficulties in prosodic awareness in dyslexia. Potential prosodic effects in short-term memory have not yet been investigated. Here we create a new instrument based on three-syllable words that vary in stress patterns, to investigate whether prosodic similarity (the same prosodic pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables) ex

Hyperthermia impaired human visual short-term memory: an fMRI study.

PURPOSE: In order to investigate the effects of hyperthermia conditions on human cognitive performance, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was employed to investigate human brain activation during visual short-term memory (VSTM) tasks under modulated hyperthermia conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 38 right-handed healthy young male participants were randomly divided into control and hyperthermia groups who underwent VSTM tasks by using block design. RESULTS: Compared with that of the control group, the reaction time of the hyperthermia group was longer in VSTM tasks (p =

Representation of dynamic spatial configurations in visual short-term memory.

Locations of multiple stationary objects are represented on the basis of their global spatial configuration in visual short-term memory (VSTM). Once objects move individually, they form a global spatial configuration with varying spatial inter-object relations over time. The representation of such dynamic spatial configurations in VSTM was investigated in six experiments. Participants memorized a scene with six moving and/or stationary objects and performed a location change detection task for one object specified during the probing phase. The spatial configuration of the objects was manipulat

Short-term memory resists the depressant effect of the nonimmobilizer 1-2-dichlorohexafluorocyclobutane (2N) more than long-term memory.

UNLABELLED: The nonimmobilizer 1,2-dichlorohexafluorocyclobutane (2N, also termed F6) does not suppress movement to noxious stimuli but does suppress learning of fear-potentiated startle. The mechanism whereby 2N suppresses this learning is unknown. Herein, we report the effect of 2N on suppression of two other forms of learning, fear conditioning to context and to tone. Because 2N does not cause sedation, we could study the effect of 2N on short-term memory (memory for fear conditioning measured during or immediately after training) as well as on long-term memory (measured 24 h after training

Working memory, short-term memory, and reading disabilities: a selective meta-analysis of the literature.

The purpose of the present study was to synthesize research that compares children with and without reading disabilities (RD) on measures of short-term memory (STM) and working memory (WM). Across a broad age, reading, and IQ range, 578 effect sizes (ESs) were computed, yielding a mean ES across studies of -.89 (SD = 1.03). A total of 257 ESs were in the moderate range for STM measures (M = -.61, 95% confidence range of -.65 to -.58), and 320 ESs were in the moderate range for WM measures (M = -.67, 95% confidence range of -.68 to -.64). The results indicated that children with RD were distinc

When Attention Fails Memory: Voluntary Orienting Deficits and Visual Short-Term Memory in Intellectual Disability.

Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) exhibit deficits in both selective attention and visual short-term memory (VSTM). However, whether attentional deficits directly constrain VSTM performance in ID remains unknown. Here, we examined the interplay between these two processes in ID and their correlates with fluid intelligence across individuals with varying levels of intellectual functioning. Nineteen adults with ID and twenty-two chronologically matched neurotypical adults (TDA) carried out the Attentional Orienting Task (AOT), in which they briefly viewed a memory array, followed by

Short-term and long-term effects of diazepam on the memory for discrimination and generalization of scopolamine.

Benzodiazepines are among the most widely prescribed and misused psychopharmaceutical drugs. Although they are well-tolerated, they are also capable of producing amnestic effects similar to those observed after pharmacological or organic cholinergic dysfunction. To date, the effect of benzodiazepine diazepam on the memory for discrimination of anticholinergic drugs has not been reported. The aim of the present study was to analyze the immediate and long-term effects of diazepam on a drug discrimination task with scopolamine. Male Wistar rats were trained to discriminate between scopolamine and

Vulnerability of short-term memory in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Interference from distracting stimuli renders short-term memory vulnerable. While behavioral evidence suggests short-term memory deficits in Alzheimer's disease (AD), the underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. Using a mouse model of AD (APP-KI), we identified increased susceptibility of short-term memory to sensory perturbations. Simultaneous two-photon calcium imaging across eight cortical regions during a delayed-response task showed that distractors disrupted neural selectivity at both single-neuron and population levels in APP-KI mice. Recurrent neural network models replic

An older man with progressive short-term memory loss and confusion.

A 72-year-old man with progressive memory loss and confusion presented to a neurology clinic for evaluation. He initially had difficulty remembering names and misplaced objects; however, his memory deficits had progressed, and more recently he had numerous car accidents and difficulty managing his own medications and finances. Cognitive testing revealed significant memory deficits reflecting moderate-stage dementia, and his brain MRI showed several cortical microbleeds and an area of siderosis consistent with the diagnosis of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). This case report provides an over

Evidence for dimensional independence in short-term memory of retarded individuals.

This experiment was designed to assess the relative importance of dimensional similarity between test and interpolated problems and absolute difficulty of interpolated material as variables influencing short-term retention in the discrimination learning of retarded persons. Twenty moderate-to-borderline retarded individuals were taught a mixed series of two-trial discriminations consisting of: (a) relatively easy multidimensional ("junk") problems and (b) more difficult, form-relevant dotpattern discriminations. Test problems and interpolations were either dimensionally similar (both junk or b
