Learning and memory disorders and their assessment.

Brain lesions cause memory to break down in several distinct ways in people. First, cortical lesions cause disturbances in short-term memory. Second, other cortical lesions disturb the retrieval of previously well-established semantic and episodic memories. Third, frontal cortex dysfunction seems to be related to a memory syndrome caused by a breakdown in the ability to plan and carry out elaborative processing. Fourth, and most explored, is the amnesic syndrome(s), caused by limbic system or diencephalic lesions. Other less-studied forms of memory breakdown almost certainly exist and some mem

Neurodevelopmental disorders: assessing and training working memory.

It is vital that working memory capacity can be assessed and trained with motivating resources, in a personalized way in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. This paper illustrates the possibility of a serious game, such as WorM, to assess and train children's working memory capacity. WorM was designed, developed and evaluated through three studies (Study 1: informative, Study 2: validation and Study 3: user studies). The first two qualitative studies employ in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, to identify, argue and validate suitable design aspects guided by interviews from

[Brain imaging of patients with memory disorders].

Indications for brain imaging include potentially treatable intracranial causes (e.g. normal-pressure hydrocephalus, tumors, subdural hematoma) and especially characteristic features of memory disorders and differential diagnostics of such conditions. Since the primary structural changes in the most common progressive memory disorder, Alzheimer's disease, are seen in the inner temporal lobe, appropriate imaging of these structures is essential in early diagnosis.

Working memory in children with developmental disorders.

The aim of the present study was to directly compare working memory skills across students with different developmental disorders to investigate whether the uniqueness of their diagnosis would impact memory skills. The authors report findings confirming differential memory profiles on the basis of the following developmental disorders: Specific Language Impairment, Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Asperger syndrome (AS). Specifically, language impairments were associated with selective deficits in verbal short-term and working memory, whe

Approaches to memory loss in neuropsychiatric disorders.

Many neuropsychiatric disorders affect memory. Brain regions important in the neuroanatomic substrate of memory include the hippocampus, and sections of the frontal, temporal, and parietal cortices and the thalamus. Acetylcholine and many other neurotransmitters and neuromodulators including dopamine, glutamate, GABA, the catecholamines, and estrogen modulate cognitive function. Treatment approaches to memory loss typically use Alzheimer's dementia as the template, and are discussed in this report.

The relationship between working memory and episodic memory disorders in transient global amnesia.

In a previous study, we investigated the relationship between the disorders of both episodic memory and working memory in the acute phase of transient global amnesia (TGA). Since executive functions were spared, another dysfunction may be responsible for the binding and maintenance of multimodal informations and contribute to the encoding disorders observed in some patients [Quinette, P., Guillery, B., Desgranges, B., de la Sayette, V., Viader, F., & Eustache, F. (2003). Working memory and executive functions in transient global amnesia. Brain, 126, 1917-1934.]. The aim of this present study w

Memory disorder in vertebrobasilar disease.

Previous workers have clearly established that the central core limbic structures of the brain are primarily concerned in the production of amnesia of the axial or mesial type. The blood supply to these structures derives primarily from the posterior cerebral circulation. This was the rationale for Benson's work on 'amnesic stroke' in patients with posterior cerebral artery occlusion. We have extended this concept to show that a similar axial amnesia, as demonstrated by a classical response on Wechsler Memory Scale testing, exists in patients with vertebrobasilar insufficiency. Relative perman

IGF2 in memory, neurodevelopmental disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) emerged as a critical mechanism of synaptic plasticity and learning and memory. Deficits in IGF2 in the brain, serum, or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are associated with brain diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Increasing IGF2 levels enhances memory in healthy animals and reverses numerous symptoms in laboratory models of aging, neurodevelopmental disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases. These effects occur via the IGF2 receptor (IGF2R) - a receptor that i

Memory biases in the anxiety disorders: current status.

Information-processing models of emotional disorders suggest that anxious individuals may be characterized by a memory bias for threat-relevant information. This paper reviews and synthesizes evidence for explicit (conscious) and implicit (unconscious) memory biases in the anxiety disorders. Our review suggests variations among the anxiety disorders for explicit memory biases. Specifically, there is support for explicit memory biases for threat-relevant information in panic disorder (PD), particularly when information has been deeply encoded, but not in social phobia (SP) or generalized anxiet

[Clinical types of memory disorders and their diagnosis].

Three major types of amnesia, i.e. selective deficit of memory formation without disturbance of immediate memory have been recognized clinically. The hippocampal type is characterized by relatively short retrograde amnesia and preserved insight into his own amnesic trouble. Persistent amnesia is always associated with bilateral lesion. The diencephalon type usually shows longer retrograde amnesia and poor insight. Unilateral lesion is usually modal in deficit, i.e. verbal in the left and non-verbal in the right, and lacks clear evidence of retrograde amnesia. Responsible locus within the thala

Low diagnostic yield in a memory disorders clinic.

A review of the first 144 patients to attend a Memory Disorders Clinic found not one case of treatable dementia. The use of a routine comprehensive battery of investigations was not supported: however, computerized tomographic brain scans and electroencephalograms were moderately useful in diagnosing dementia. Clinical features and historical data did not discriminate early- from late-onset Alzheimer's disease or Alzheimer's disease from multi-infarct dementia.

Biological evidence of gintonin efficacy in memory disorders.

Gintonin is a novel glycolipoprotein, which has been abundantly found in the root of Korean ginseng. It holds lysophosphatidic acids (LPAs), primarily identified LPA C18:2, and is an exogenous agonist of LPA receptors (LPARs). Gintonin maintains blood-brain barrier integrity, and it has recently been studied in several models of neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Gintonin demonstrated neuroprotective activity by providing action against neuroinflammation-, apoptosis- and oxidative stre

Psychopathological factors, memory disorders and transient global amnesia.

BACKGROUND: Some studies have shown the presence of psychopathological disorders in transient global amnesia. AIMS: To determine whether transient global amnesia is associated with psychopathological disorders and to assess the influence of these psychopathological disorders on memory impairments. METHOD: Levels of anxiety and depression before and during transient global amnesia were rated. Memory performances were assessed by means of original episodic memory tasks and working memory tasks. These data were collected in 17 individuals observed during the very acute phase, 18 individuals exa

Memory Functions in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Background/Objectives: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex psychiatric condition often associated with alterations in cognitive processes, including memory. Although memory dysfunction has been proposed as a contributing factor to the onset and maintenance of OCD symptoms, it remains debated whether these deficits reflect genuine cognitive impairments or maladaptive metacognitive processes, such as pathological doubt and memory distrust. This review aims to synthesize current findings on memory functioning in OCD, focusing on distinct memory systems and the role of metacognition.

Metabolic Disorder Therapeutics and their Effects on Memory.

Diabetes is one of the major metabolic disorders of this era. It not only impacts a person's lifestyle but also has a long-term impact on the brain. It has a detrimental effect on a person's health when combined with hypertension and hyperlipidaemia. Several studies have suggested that the incidence of dementia is higher in people with metabolic syndrome. Investigations are underway to determine whether antidiabetic, hypolipidemic, hypercholesteraemic, anti-hypertensive, and other combination medicines can minimize the incidence of cognitive impairment. Some studies have suggested that anti-di

Prospective memory in obsessive compulsive disorder.

Studies on the nature and extent of prospective memory impairment in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder are relatively scarce. The present study examined prospective memory in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder in comparison to patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls. Prospective memory was assessed using Memory for Intentions Screening Test (MIST). Further, the participants were administered Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System Tower Test, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, and Stroop Test for assessing their planning ability, mental flexibility and cognitive inhibition

Autobiographical memories in major depressive disorder.

The objective of this research was to study the relation between the processing and recall of information in major depressive disorder. An autobiographical memory task was applied to 42 subjects with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, 28 subjects with a diagnosis of panic disorder and 51 subjects without any psychological disorder. We used clinical scales for the evaluation of depression and anxiety. The results of the three groups, and both assessment periods of depressed subjects, were compared. The results indicate the existence, in severely depressed subjects, of a bias in processin

Intrusive memories and images in bipolar disorder.

Modifying intrusive memories and images is a powerful intervention in depression and anxiety disorders, but little is known about the presence of these intrusions in bipolar disorder. A semi-structured interview was administered to 29 euthymic patients with bipolar disorder, requiring them to report the intrusive memories and images recalled from their most recent episode of euthymia, depression and hypomania. Euthymia was characterised by intrusive memories of the past, which were less distressing than the memories experienced in depressed states. In addition to intrusive memories, depression
