Intrathoracic meningocele is a condition characterized by the protrusion of dura mater and cerebrospinal fluid within the thoracic cavity. This can be associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and other connective tissue disorders. Less commonly, it can occur in isolation. We describe one of the few cases of a large thoracic meningocele presenting in an adult without NF1 or another genetically predisposing condition. This case involves a 78-year-old woman who presented with back pain, shortness of breath, and lower limb weakness. The computed tomography (CT) scan reported a pleural effusi…

Almost all cases of cervical spinal dysraphism published to date have involved cystic lesions and were treated in very early childhood. The authors describe a unique case of a 21-year-old woman who harbored a solid cervical rudimentary meningocele. On preoperative CT and MR images, a cutaneous solid mass was shown to be connected to intraspinal contents by a stalk traversing the C-3 lamina defect. The authors resected the cutaneous mass and released the tethering neural band from the vertical axis of the spinal cord without causing injury. Pathological examination demonstrated a dense collagen…

A 16-year-old girl with transsphenoidal meningocele and signs of hypothalamic insufficiency is presented. Hormonal disturbances have been reported in only three similar cases in the literature. The radiological criteria for the diagnosis are discussed with emphasis on the differential diagnosis of a persistent cranipharyngeal canal. Based on the present case and studies of the pertinent literature we propose that all patients exhibiting signs of dysraphism of the base of the skull should be thoroughly investigated for hormonal disturbances. Children with cleft palate should be examined for pos…

A case of traumatic avulsion of the L-5 and S-1 nerve roots is described. Surgical intervention was undertaken and long-term functional recovery obtained.

The authors present the case of a 43-years-old man who had suffered from back pain for 7 to 8 years followed by sciatic. X-rays showed an abnormal sacral cavity extending from S1 to S3. Wtih the suspicion of an occult sacral meningocoele, Dimer X radiculography showed a cystic formation at S2 which only partially filled the sacral cavity. There was also an L5-S1 disc protrusion. At operation, after exploration of the roots on both sides, it was possible to remove a disc herniation at L5-S1 on the right. Laminectomy of S1 and opening of the posterior wall of the sacral canal at S2 and S3 reveal

Spina bifida with or without meningocele or meningomyelocele is encountered infrequently in small animal practice. The English bulldog and Manx cat are breeds predisposed. Although often silent clinically, in those animals with clinical signs, it is important to recognize the signs early and to understand the appropriate imaging modalities employed in establishing a diagnosis. In a select population of affected animals, proposed surgical intervention may be considered to prevent neurologic decline, prevent secondary complications, and potentially improve outcomes.

A 53-year-old male presented with an abdominal mass and urinary disturbance. Plain pelvic X-rays revealed a scimitar deformity of the sacrum. Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen and lumbosacral spine showed a 13 X 17 X 17 cm, hypodense, cystic mass. Metrizamide myelography disclosed a bony defect at the S2 level through which contrast material entered the pelvic cyst, confirming the diagnosis of anterior sacral meningocele. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated the extent of the abdominal mass and its communication with the thecal sac through the anterior sacral defect. The patient under…

Anterior sacral meningocele is a rare abnormality. Only 14 cases of it have been reported in association with pregnancy. Of those 14 patients, three died as a result of rupture of the meningocele during labor and postpartum. A new case is presented; the clinical presentation, the diagnosis, and treatment are discussed. The obstetric management of the case is discussed and a plan for management is suggested.

Parietal foramina are symmetrical bone defects adjacent to the sagittal suture and are not usually associated with other malformations. A case is described in which scalp tumors protruded through the foramina and proved to be meningoceles. No such cases appear to have been previously reported. The possible developmental mechanisms are discussed.

OBJECT: Intrasacral meningoceles are rare cystic lesions that can cause focal compression within the bony sacral canal. Their mechanisms are poorly understood, but most intrasacral meningoceles appear to be intrasacral extradural cysts caused by arachnoid herniating through a small dural defect in the caudal end of the thecal sac. As opposed to perineural cysts, they are not associated with an exiting nerve root. When symptomatic, they can cause sacral pain or sacral nerve root dysfunction due to local compression.
METHODS: This is a retrospective series from Boston Children's Hospital. All p…

OBJECT: We designed this study to elucidate the associated occult spinal lesions in patients with simple dorsal meningocele.
METHODS: The study population was comprised of two groups. Group I comprised newly diagnosed patients with dorsal spinal meningocele, and group II comprised patients who had had surgery for meningocele and presented with progressive neurological deficits. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the whole spinal column were done. The associated spinal cord malformations were also treated at the same operation. There were 14 boys and 8 girls, with an age range from birt…
