The meniscus has an important role in stabilizing the knee joint and protecting the articular cartilage from shear forces. Meniscus tears are common injuries and can disrupt these protective properties, leading to an increased risk of articular cartilage damage and eventual osteoarthritis. Certain tear patterns are often treated with arthroscopic partial meniscectomy, which can effectively relieve symptoms. However, removal of meniscal tissue can also diminish the ability of the meniscus to dissipate hoop stresses, resulting in altered biomechanics of the knee joint including increased contact

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1995eng
Osteonecrosis of the medial femoral condyle is an uncommon complication of meniscal surgery. Whether this disease is associated with the original medial meniscus lesion or with the arthroscopic procedure is not yet known. We present two cases in which osteonecrosis has developed shortly after arthroscopy was performed for medial meniscus pathology. Magnetic resonance imaging has been the best tool to diagnose and follow up the changes in the involved area. Concerning the etiology, the authors raise the question of whether the medial compartment overloading observed in both of these cases had a

Guidelines for knee rehabilitation after conventional open meniscectomy are generally well known. Less agreement exists on rehabilitation following arthroscopic meniscectomy. The program is sometimes arbitrary. Rehabilitation should follow a logical progression regardless of the type of surgery performed. Rehabilitation following knee surgery can be divided into four phases: immediate post-operative period, early healing phase, late healing phase, and conditioning for return to preinjury activity. Following arthroscopic surgery, the overall recovery time can be significantly shortened compared

Fifty six meniscectomy patients were divided into 2 groups. One group (27 patients) was given the standard postoperative physiotherapy and the remainder (29 patients) received intensive physiotherapy. Clinical examination of the knee joint was performed preoperatively and 1, 2 and 4 weeks postoperatively. The patients' age was 36.26 +/- 12.34 and 34.00 +/- 9.21 years in the two groups respectively. The medial meniscus was removed from 47 patients, the lateral meniscus from 8 patients and bilateral meniscectomy was performed on one patient; no tear was seen in the excised meniscus in 8 cases. T

The causes of persistent symptoms after meniscectomy have been assessed clinically, radiologically and arthroscopically in 174 knees. The commonest finding was early degenerative arthritis (chondromalacia) of the femoral condyle (40 per cent). Retained fragments of meniscus were less common than expected (13 per cent), and lesions of the other meniscus were rare (5 per cent). The clinical diagnosis was altered in 42 percent by arthroscopic examination. Arthroscopy was found to be a valuable technique in this group of patients with problems of diagnosis.

One hundred and fifty-four knees with 161 torn menisci were examined with the arthroscope immediately before meniscectomy. The incidence of early degenerative arthritis (chondromalacia) of the femoral condyle was correlated with the age of the patient, the interval between injury and surgery, and the type of meniscal lesion. The incidence of condylar chondromalacia was significantly higher in patients over the age of thirty (p less than 0.01) and in those with a history longer than three months (p less than 0.05). Posterior horn tears were associated with the highest incidence of degenerative

Partial arthroscopic meniscectomy has been performed in the First Orthopedic Clinic of the University of Florence since 1981. We have reviewed the first 100 cases with an average follow-up of 18 months. The results were graded according to a numerical rating system and were satisfactory in 85% of the cases. The main advantage of this difficult technique is the fast recovery rate. Other advantages are the low morbidity and short hospital stay. When meniscectomy was performed in the ACL unstable knee, the results were inferior but still acceptable in terms of reduction of the mechanical symptoms

Fifty-eight patients who had undergone meniscal surgery were reviewed. Half had undergone conventional open meniscectomy, and half had been treated by arthroscopic meniscectomy. Each patient in the open group was matched with a patient in the endoscopic group by age, sex, and type of meniscal lesion. Patients with ligamentous injuries were excluded. Twelve patients in the endoscopic group were operated on as outpatients; the mean post-operative hospital stay in the 17 hospitalized patients in the endoscopic group was one day as compared with a mean of 3.3 days for the patients in the open grou

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Given the continued controversy among orthopedic surgeons regarding the indications and benefits of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM), this review summarizes the current literature, indications, and outcomes of partial meniscectomy to treat symptomatic meniscal tears.
RECENT FINDINGS: In patients with symptomatic meniscal tears, the location and tear pattern play a vital role in clinical management. Tears in the central white-white zone are less amenable to repair due to poor vascularity. Patients may be indicated for APM or non-surgical intervention depending on the

Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy can be complicated by excessive resection, damage to articular cartilage, neurovascular injury, persistent drainage from portals, and infection; the procedure can be rendered more difficult, and the outcome less certain, if the surgeon fails to recognize concomitant injuries, malpositions the portals, or misidentifies the components of a meniscus tear. We review the problems that can occur as a result of errors made before, during, and after surgery.

We reviewed 74 partial medial meniscectomies in 57 patients with stable knees, to assess the long-term functional and radiological outcome. The International Knee Documentation Committee score and the residual laxity were assessed in both knees. At the time of surgery the mean age of the patients was 36 +/- 11 years and the mean follow-up was 12 +/- 1 years. All had a limited medial meniscectomy. The anterior cruciate ligament was intact in all cases. The meniscal tear was vertical in 95% and complex in 5%. The posterior part of the meniscus was removed in 99%. A peripheral rim was preserved i

Seventy-five children undergoing 77 meniscectomies have been reviewed from 1 to 30 years (mean 15) after operation in order to determine the late results of meniscectomy. Arthroscopy of the patients with a poor result was performed at the follow-up. In 30 per cent osteoarthrosis was diagnosed, all with follow-up times from 19 to 25 years. Delay in operation resulted in worse results. The younger the patient the worse the result. The benefit of operation was less in girls than in boys. Bucket-handle lesions and peripheral tears produced the best results after meniscectomy. Fifty-eight per cent

The purpose of this report is to describe a case of osteonecrosis that occurred after arthroscopic meniscectomy associated with a radiofrequency device. The patient developed increasing knee pain and disability 6 months after arthroscopic meniscectomy. Magnetic resonance imaging showed subchondral osteonecrosis of both femoral condyles with cyst formation.

Arthroscopy is now well established as a method of diagnosing meniscal lesions, and its advantages have been pointed out in several reports. Arthroscopic surgery, however, is difficult to master, so that for meniscectomy open methods remain commoner. By taking advantage of the new instruments and equipment developed for arthroscopic operations, a modified technique of open meniscectomy, designed to improve the postoperative course, has been developed. In a prospective randomised study, the results after this modified open meniscectomy were comparable with those obtained after arthroscopic oper

We reviewed 230 patients an average of 34 months after they had undergone partial or total meniscectomy by surgeons of different experience in a busy unit. Open and arthroscopic meniscectomies were compared. Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy resulted in a significant reduction of inpatient stay and earlier return to work and sport. Analysis of the type of meniscal damage showed that arthroscopic removal of "bucket handles" achieved better results than open techniques. Comparatively poor results were found for lateral meniscectomy.

The goal of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy is to preserve a stable rim of meniscal cartilage, removing only unstable, diseased tissue. As one of the most common orthopedic procedures performed in the United States, arthroscopic partial meniscectomy developed as an alternative to open total meniscectomy that leads to degenerative changes in the knee over time. The short-term results of this meniscal-sparing procedure are favorable. Evidence of long-term results is limited to outcome measures that are not standardized. However, the long-term trend of clinical outcomes is satisfactory, whereas

Rapid chondrolysis after partial arthroscopic lateral meniscectomy has been seldom reported in literature. Considering the relatively high number of partial lateral meniscectomy performed, we cannot understand why this complication is so rare. The purpose of this paper is to report a series of athletes developing a chondrolysis associated with posterolateral corner laxity after a partial lateral meniscectomy and attempt to hypothesize the pathogenesis of this devastating complication. Five male professional soccer players of Italian championship with a mean age of 26.8 years underwent a partia

PURPOSE: In patients who underwent arthroscopic meniscectomy for medial meniscus tears, the authors wished to ascertain (1) whether varus alignment in the lower extremity would increase after an operation and (2) if so, what the related factors would be.
METHODS: Among 181 patients from 20 to 60 years of age who underwent arthroscopic medial meniscectomy for medial meniscus tears between 2002 and 2005, 56 patients followed for a minimum period of 5 years were enroled for this study. Alignment in the lower extremity was measured preoperatively and again at the last follow-up. Change in varus a
