Barriers to Women's Menstrual Hygiene Practices during Recurrent Disasters and Displacement: A Qualitative Study.

Disasters that involve displacement are particularly challenging for managing personal and menstrual hygiene, which can increase the risk of toxic shock syndrome, infections and other health conditions that can endanger women's lives. This study aimed to examine the menstrual hygiene challenges experienced by internally displaced women affected by recurrent natural disasters and subsequent displacement in the context of a low-middle-income country, i.e., Pakistan. A critical ethnographic study was undertaken in disaster-relief camps in the northern region of Pakistan. Data were collected using

Menstrual hygiene practices among adolescent women in rural India: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Exclusive use of hygienic methods (sanitary napkins, locally prepared napkins, tampons, and menstrual cups) to prevent the visibility of bloodstains during menstruation is still considerably low among adolescent women in rural India. However, no prior research has explored the prevalence and determinants of exclusive hygienic methods among rural Indian adolescent women. To address this gap, this study examines the factors affecting adolescent women's exclusive use of hygienic methods in rural India. Additionally, this study explores state- and district-level geographical disparitie

The Relationship Between Women's Disaster Preparedness, Genital Hygiene Behaviors, and Menstrual Hygiene Measures.

INTRODUCTION: Disasters disrupt access to water, sanitation, privacy, and menstrual hygiene products, thereby increasing women's risk of genital and urinary tract infections and posing a threat to reproductive health. Despite the importance of disaster preparedness, limited evidence exists on the relationship between women's disaster preparedness, genital hygiene behaviors, and menstrual hygiene measures. METHODS: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between women's disaster preparedness and menstrual hygiene practices in relation to general genital hygiene. It was a cross-section

Self-Cleaning Menstrual Cups with Plant-Based Biodegradable Superabsorbent Fibrous Tablets for Hygienic and Sustainable Period Care.

Menstrual cups are a sustainable and reusable alternative to pads and tampons, offering reduced waste and lower risks of allergies, infections, and toxic shock syndrome. However, their widespread adoption and long-term use are hindered by hygiene concerns, specifically biofouling and the need for messy removal. We report a self-cleaning menstrual cup with a biocompatible silicone oil-infused coating combined with a biodegradable plant-based tablet composed of superabsorbent fibers. The absorbent fibers were designed with cross-linked alginate and optimized to achieve high absorption capacities

Resource recovery from soiled sanitary napkin waste-a state-of-the-art review.

With ever-improving social and medical awareness about menstrual hygiene in India, the demand for sanitary napkins has increased significantly. The utilization of high-quality and environment-friendly raw materials to produce these pads is further supporting the growth of the market. However, with improving demand and usage, the need for proper disposal techniques becomes more relevant, since all of these pads get contaminated with human blood which makes them a biohazard and can cause significant damage to human health and the environment. One sanitary pad takes around 800 years to degrade na

Microplastics and Intimate Toys: A Concerning Trend?

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are ubiquitous in the modern world. Humans are exposed to MNPs through inhalation and ingestion, with a small amount of transdermal uptake. MNPs recently have been identified in the human placenta and endometrium. Although the source of placental MNPs is consistent with haematogenous spread, the presence of MNPs in the endometrium is more puzzling. As small particles can move retrograde from the vagina to the fallopian tubes, two unsuspected MNP sources are tampons and intimate toys. Intimate toys, in particular, might well be an important source of reproductive

A mild case of toxic shock syndrome.

The toxic shock syndrome (TSS) most often is seen in young, healthy women who become symptomatic during menstruation. The association between TSS and the use of tampons is strong. The symptoms usually begin suddenly and are often nonspecific. Prostration and hypotensive shock can occur within 24 hours. Milder forms of the disease also may be seen. The overall mortality rate is approximately 8 percent. This report describes a mild case of TSS in a young, healthy, 16-year-old female who developed symptoms during menstruation. She had been using regular-size tampons, which were changed frequently

A call to action: Standardisation of intravaginal hygiene product reporting in preoperative evaluation.

Preoperative checklists have demonstrated efficacy in improving patient care in the surgical setting. While the assessment of perioperative risks through patient inquiry is extensive, the menstrual status of the patient is one question that is not frequently discussed. If a patient is menstruating during their surgical procedure, unknown use of an intravaginal menstrual hygiene product, such as a tampon or menstrual cup, places the patient at risk of infection. This review seeks to bring attention to these risks by exploring Boyer v. Morimoto, a case where a patient developed toxic shock syndr

Can the behind-the-knee clinical test be used to evaluate the mechanical and chemical irritation potential for products intended for contact with mucous membranes?

BACKGROUND: The behind-the-knee (BTK) clinical test system is being used increasingly to replace in-use clinical studies in the evaluation of potential irritation effects of consumer products. The objectives of these studies were to determine if the BTK test could adequately evaluate the potential to cause irritation for feminine protection products intended for mucous membrane contact, and confirm that the BTK test would not underestimate the irritant potential that may occur when products such as tampons come into contact with mucous membranes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two identical tampon pr

"Healthy bodies, healthy minds": barriers and solutions to implementing a menstrual hygiene management program in South Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) can be challenging for women and girls living in conflict-affected low- and middle-income countries, where access to menstrual products, soap, water, and private sanitation facilities is often limited. In response to these challenges, the Canadian Red Cross, in partnership with the South Sudan Red Crescent and the South Sudanese Government, implemented the Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds (HBHM) program from 2020-2023 to support MHM in South Sudan. Despite growing attention to MHM needs, few studies have examined the on-the-ground realities of impleme

Integrating experimental data and mechanistic modeling to assess potential lead exposure from tampon use.

Trace levels of lead (Pb) have been reported in tampons, prompting concerns about potential exposure during menstrual product use. However, the presence of a chemical in a product does not necessarily translate to biologically relevant exposure. In this study, we characterized the distribution and binding of Pb in menstrual fluid and developed a deterministic, compartmental mass-balance model to evaluate the release and fate of Pb that may be present as an inadvertent trace impurity in tampons. Our experimental measurements demonstrated that Pb preferentially partitions to the red blood cell (

A multimodality review of gynecologic devices in the pelvis.

There are a wide variety of gynecologic devices encountered on pelvic imaging which may not be the focus or primary reason for imaging. Such devices include pessaries, menstrual products, radiation therapy devices, tubal occlusion devices, and contraceptive devices, including intrauterine devices and intravaginal rings. This manuscript offers a comprehensive review of multimodality imaging appearances of gynecologic devices encountered on pelvic imaging and discusses device indications, positioning, and complications.
