Key competencies for psychedelic treatment in real-world mental health care settings.

Psychedelic treatments are extending beyond research units and into hospitals, outpatient clinics, and community practices. Contrasting the constrained procedures of clinical trials with the realities of routine practice, this article outlines the competencies needed for safe, effective, and ethically sound psychedelic therapy in everyday mental health care. To accommodate mainstream adoption of these treatments, the competencies framework we present respects the distinctive contextual and cultural sensitivities of psychedelic care while remaining anchored in established psychotherapeutic, med

Policy statement--The future of pediatrics: mental health competencies for pediatric primary care.

Pediatric primary care clinicians have unique opportunities and a growing sense of responsibility to prevent and address mental health and substance abuse problems in the medical home. In this report, the American Academy of Pediatrics proposes competencies requisite for providing mental health and substance abuse services in pediatric primary care settings and recommends steps toward achieving them. Achievement of the competencies proposed in this statement is a goal, not a current expectation. It will require innovations in residency training and continuing medical education, as well as a co

Impact of Virtual Reality Mental Health Nursing Simulation on Nursing Students' Competence.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the impact of a Virtual Reality (VR)-based Mental Health Nursing Practice Simulation (MHNPS) on nursing students' competency in caring for individuals with mental disorders. Nursing students often face fear, anxiety, and helplessness during mental health (MH) rotations, impeding the attainment of learning objectives in the MH nursing practicum. Therefore, innovative strategies offering practice opportunities are crucial for their competence development. METHODS: Using a one-group pretest-posttest repeated measures experimental design, 50 nursing students, havi

Multimodal generative AI for pre-practicum mental health support competency development: a human-supervised framework for education-childcare partnerships.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and multimodal interaction are attracting growing attention in mental health-related education and care. At the same time, pre-service childcare professionals are increasingly expected to observe and respond sensitively to infants' and toddlers' emotional signals, attachment needs, separation reactions, and interaction patterns. These contextual and ethically sensitive capacities require more than lectures or procedural training. Authentic practicum remains indispensable, but safeguarding, consent, privacy, placement availability, supervisory capacity

Attitudes, Roles, and Competencies of Clinical Psychologists Regarding Euthanasia Due to Unbearable Mental Suffering.

Since the enactment of Belgium's euthanasia law in 2002, clinical psychologists have played an increasingly significant role in the multidisciplinary approach to euthanasia, particularly regarding cases involving unbearable mental suffering (UMS euthanasia). This cross-sectional study examined the attitudes, roles, and competencies of clinical psychologists in Flanders concerning UMS euthanasia using an online questionnaire (n = 242). The survey explored attitudes towards UMS euthanasia, as well as self-perceived competencies and involvement. Results indicate that most psychologists hold a gen

Legal Admissibility of the Competence Assessment for Standing Trial for Defendants with Mental Retardation (CAST-MR).

The Competence Assessment for Standing Trial for Defendants with Mental Retardation (CAST-MR) was developed to assess competence to stand trial in defendants with Intellectual Disability. Although it remains the only validated instrument for this population, previous research has suggested it is rarely used by forensic examiners, a finding our survey of legal cases confirms. Initial validation studies provided some support for the instrument's reliability and validity. However, in both these and subsequent studies, there were significant limitations with respect to the size and representativen

The public's view of the competence, dangerousness, and need for legal coercion of persons with mental health problems.

OBJECTIVES: The authors examined Americans' opinions about financial and treatment competence of people with mental health problems, potential for harm to self or others, and the use of legal means to force treatment. METHODS: The 1996 General Social Survey provided interview data with a nationally representative sample (n = 1444). Respondents were given a vignette based on diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia, major depression, alcohol dependence, or drug dependence, or a "control" case. RESULTS: The specific nature of the problem was the most important factor shaping public reaction. Resp

Effects of alternated sport competition in perceived competence for adolescent males with mild to moderate mental retardation.

Since the beginning of the 1990s, two types of organized competitive sport (Segregated or Integrated) have been proposed for adolescents with mental retardation (AMR). These programmes often have as an objective the improvement of the individual's perceived competence. In France, a third competitive system, called Alternated sport meets (Segregated and Integrated) is actually used. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of this type of programme and type of sport (basketball versus running) on domains of perceived competence and general self-worth. The participants were 32 AMR (Me

Relationship-Specific Attachment and Mentalization as Predictors of Borderline Personality Features and Interpersonal Competence Among Emerging Adults.

Developmental psychopathology models, like the mentalization theory, have facilitated the theoretical understanding of trajectories that contribute to the expression and experience of borderline personality (BP) features. Mentalization theory posits that BP vulnerabilities and interpersonal difficulties arise from insecure attachment experiences and deficits in mentalizing ability. This study explored the intersections of attachment vulnerabilities in close relationships, mentalizing domains, and their combined impact on BP features and interpersonal competence in emerging adults. The sample i

Collaborative practices between correctional and mental health services in Norway: Expanding the roles and responsibility competence domain.

Internationally, mental illness is high in prison populations. Collaboration between the correctional services (CS) and mental health services (MHS) is required to address this. Little is known of the collaborative processes in this context, however. This article presents the findings of a study exploring the characteristics of collaborative practices between the MHS and CS in a Norwegian context. A purposeful sample (n = 12) of MHS and CS leaders was recruited from one region in Norway. Taking a generic qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews with each participant explored specific s

Clinical Competence for Youth Suicide: Use of Simulation in Pediatric and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Programs.

Approximately one in five adolescents in the United States has a mental health concern and suicide is the second leading cause of death in this population. It is vital to prepare nurse practitioner (NP) students with the required skills to assess and manage youth with suicidal ideation. Unfortunately, it is challenging for NP students to accumulate these critical competencies due to limited preceptors and the infrequent presentation of suicidality in certain clinical sites. Furthermore, the serious nature of a child in mental health crisis often requires students to take a passive role while d

Are Trait Emotional Competencies and Heart Rate Variability Linked to Mental Health of Coronary Heart Disease Patients?

PURPOSE: Depression and anxiety have been extensively associated with adverse outcomes in coronary heart disease patients. However, psychological and physiological processes underlying the persistence of these troubles in coronary heart disease patients attending cardiac rehabilitation are poorly investigated. Trait emotional competencies and heart rate variability could be some of these processes. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the predictive value of trait emotional competencies and heart rate variability on depression and anxiety symptoms persistence in coronary heart disease pat

Strengthening community mental health competence-A realist informed case study from Dehradun, North India.

Few accounts exist of programmes in low- and middle-income countries seeking to strengthen community knowledge and skills in mental health. This case study uses a realist lens to explore how a mental health project in a context with few mental health services, strengthened community mental health competence by increasing community knowledge, creating safer social spaces and engaging partnerships for action. We used predominantly qualitative methods to explore relationships between context, interventions, mechanisms and outcomes in the "natural setting" of a community-based mental health projec

Defining competencies for language-discordant care in migrant and refugee mental health: an international modified e-Delphi study.

BACKGROUND: Migrants and refugees experience a higher prevalence of mental disorders than host populations, and language discordance undermines care from help-seeking through diagnosis, adherence and outcomes. The WHO Refugee and Migrant Health: Global Competency Standards for Health Workers set broad behavioural expectations for individual health workers but do not operationalise language-discordant care, leaving clinicians and administrators without measurable standards. OBJECTIVE: To develop an international, consensus-based competency framework for healthcare professionals working in lang

Career perception as an upstream determinant of mental health and professional competencies in health professions education during systemic disruption.

BACKGROUND: Systemic disruptions, including public health emergencies, natural disasters, and large-scale interruptions to clinical training, can destabilize health professions education and reshape students' perceptions of their future careers. Career perception may function as a cognitive anchor that links disrupted learning environments with both psychological well-being and professional development, yet its structural role remains insufficiently understood. This study examined whether career perception operates as an upstream determinant of mental health, dropout intention, and professiona
