Muscle fatigue during intermittent exercise in individuals with mental retardation.

This study examined fatigue profile during intermittent exercise in 10 men with mild to moderate mental retardation (MR) and 10 men without mental retardation (C). They performed 4 x 30s maximal knee extensions and flexions with 1-min rest on an isokinetic dynamometer. Peak torque of flexors (PTFL) and extensors (PTEX), total work (TW), and lactate were measured. Fatigue was calculated as the magnitude of decline (%) in PTFL, PTEX, and TW and as rate of decline (linear slope) in TW from 1st to 4th set. MR had lower PTFL, PTEX, TW, and lactate throughout the protocol than C, while pre-motor tim

Effects of Transcranial Stimulation on Resistance Exercise in Mentally Fatigued Subjects.

The objective was to analyze the effect of anodic transcranial direct current stimulation over the the primary motor cortex (M1) on resistance exercise in mentally fatigued individuals. Thirty-five participants performed a Stroop task to induce mental fatigue until they reached 50 mm on the visual analogue scale under three different conditions in a randomized, double-blind, crossover experimental trial. The participants completed a resistance training session with six sets for muscle failure with fixed load (Vload=1 ms-1) after the Stroop task. During the resistance training session, performa

The association of job fatigue with mental disorders among bus drivers.

OBJECTIVE: Mental disorders are a global problem with growing importance. However, the contribution of work factors to the development of mental disorders is inconclusive. This study aimed to assess the impact of fatigue and job stress on mental disorders in a prospective cohort of bus drivers. METHODS: The Taiwan Bus Driver Cohort Study (TBDCS) recruited 1652 bus drivers from a bus company in 2005. Participants self-completed a structured questionnaire in 2007, which included the Demand-Control-Support (DCS) model questions and the Swedish Occupational Fatigue Inventory-Chinese (SOFI-C). Psy

The Effect of Mental and Muscular Fatigue on the Accuracy and Kinematics of Dart Throwing.

In this study, we analyzed the effect of mental and muscular fatigue on the accuracy and kinematics of dart throwing. For this purpose, 28 young adults (19 females and 9 males) aged 25-35 years, without any regular experience in dart throwing, participated in this study. We evaluated their dart throwing skills in mental fatigue, muscular fatigue, and non-fatigue conditions. To induce mental fatigue, we used the Stroop task for 70 minutes and a simulated dart throwing exercise with an elastic band. In all three conditions, we collected accuracy data, based on the score of the dart on the board

Understanding mental and physical fatigue complaints in those with depression and insomnia.

Fatigue is a concern for both people with insomnia and with depression, yet it remains poorly understood. Participants (N = 62) included those meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., text revision) criteria for insomnia and major depressive disorder (MDD). Multiple regression examined sleep, mood, activity, and cognitive factors as predictors of mental and physical fatigue. Only the cognitive factors (i.e., unhelpful beliefs about sleep and symptom-focused rumination) were predictive of both physical and mental fatigue. Beliefs about not being able to function a

Effects of mental fatigue on Olympic ball sports performance: a systematic review.

Ball sports differ from Olympic events such as athletics, gymnastics, and diving due to their dynamic and unpredictable environments, real-time changing tasks, and complex object manipulation. Mental fatigue due to cognitive load is almost inevitable. This review searched PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and Scopus, including 23 articles and analyzing 10 Olympic ball sports. Results indicate that mental fatigue negatively impacts various aspects of ball sport athletes' performance, including psychological, cognitive, decision-making, physical, and specific skill performance. Fronto-Parietal Subnetworks Flexibility Compensates For Cognitive Decline Due To Mental Fatigue.

Fronto-parietal subnetworks were revealed to compensate for cognitive decline due to mental fatigue by community structure analysis. Here, we investigate changes in topology of subnetworks of resting-state fMRI networks due to mental fatigue induced by prolonged performance of a cognitively demanding task, and their associations with cognitive decline. As it is well established that brain networks have modular organization, community structure analyses can provide valuable information about mesoscale network organization and serve as a bridge between standard fMRI approaches and brain connecto

Phase Synchronization and Spectral Coherence Analysis of EEG Activity During Mental Fatigue.

In this article, 2 synchronization measures, phase locking value (PLV) and spectral coherence value (SCV), are used to characterize the changes of the phase synchronization and functional coupling of electroencephalogram (EEG) waves at different brain cortical areas for mental fatigue caused by a long-term cognitive task. The long-term cognitive task induces a significant decrease in the interhemispheric SCVs and PLVs of beta in central and parietal regions, a significant decrease in the intrahemispheric SCVs and PLVs of beta frequency band at the frontal-parietal and central-parietal, and fro

Reconceptualising Mental Fatigue via Perceptual Control: From Concept Label to Constitutive Definition.

Mental fatigue is widely invoked to explain performance decrements across high-stakes domains. The prevailing definition calls mental fatigue "a psychobiological state caused by prolonged demanding cognitive activity and characterised by subjective feelings of tiredness." This definition has two flaws. It confuses the label with the constitutive properties of the concept, and it treats the dissociations among self-report, performance and physiology as mixed measurement effects, when those dissociations are diagnostically informative. We argue this conflation reflects a definitional problem dis

Temporal Robustness of Mental Fatigue Susceptibility: A One-Year Follow-up Study.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has shown that mental fatigue, induced by prolonged cognitive loads, negatively impacts subjective and behavioral variables. A currently unanswered question is whether the susceptibility to mental fatigue (i.e., how much mental fatigue a person experiences and how much it affects performance) can be classified as a state or a trait characteristic, or combination of both. Therefore, a follow-up measurement of a large-scale experimental study was conducted to assess the temporal robustness of mental fatigue susceptibility. METHODS: Twenty-five participants (10♀; 31 ±

Prefrontal cortex oxygenation during a mentally fatiguing task in normoxia and hypoxia.

Mental fatigue (MF) and hypoxia impair cognitive performance through changes in brain hemodynamics. We want to elucidate the role of prefrontal cortex (PFC)-oxygenation in MF. Twelve participants (22.9 ± 3.5 years) completed four experimental trials, (1) MF in (normobaric) hypoxia (MF_HYP) (3.800 m; 13.5%O2), (2) MF in normoxia (MF_NOR) (98 m; 21.0%O2), (3) Control task in HYP (CON_HYP), (4) Control in NOR (CON_NOR). Participants performed a 2-back task, Digit Symbol Substitution test and Psychomotor Vigilance task before and after a 60-min Stroop task or an emotionally neutral documentary. Br

Intermittent fasting and mental and physical fatigue in obese and non-obese rats.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is an alternating pattern of restricting eating. This study evaluated mental and physical fatigue secondary to IF (daily 18-hour fast, 7-days-a-week) in the high-fat diet (HFD)-induced male obese Sprague Dawley rats. Fifty-four rats were randomly assigned to a HFD (n = 28) or a standard diet (SD; n = 26). After six weeks, the HFD rats were divided into one of four groups: obese HFD ad libitum (OB-HFD-AL), obese HFD-IF (OB-HFD-IF), obese SD-AL (OB-SD-AL), and obese SD-IF (OB-SD-IF). Similarly, non-obese controls were grouped into HFD-AL (C-HFD-AL), non-obese HFD-IF (C-

[Research on the influence of mental fatigue on information resources allocation of working memory].

Mental fatigue is the subjective state of people after excessive consumption of information resources. Its impact on cognitive activities is mainly manifested as decreased alertness, poor memory and inattention, which is highly related to the performance after impaired working memory. In this paper, the partial directional coherence method was used to calculate the coherence coefficient of scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) of each electrode. The analysis of brain network and its attribute parameters was used to explore the changes of information resource allocation of working memory under menta
