Prospective associations of perceived unit cohesion with postdeployment mental health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Prior investigations have found negative associations between military unit cohesion and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD); however, most relied on cross-sectional data and few examined relationships of unit cohesion to other mental disorders. This study evaluates prospective associations of perceived unit cohesion with a range of mental health outcomes following combat deployment. METHODS: U.S. Army soldiers were surveyed approximately 1-2 months before deployment to Afghanistan (T0); and 1 month (T1), 3 months (T2), and 9 months (T3) after return from deployment. Logistic reg

Associations between chronic disease, age and physical and mental health status.

This paper examines the associations between chronic disease, age, and physical and mental health-related quality of life (HRQOL), using data collected in 10 studies representing five chronic conditions. HRQOL was measured using the SF-36 or the shorter subset, SF-12. Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores were graphed by condition in age increments of 10 years, and compared to age- and sex-adjusted normative data. Linear regression models for the PCS and MCS were controlled for available confounders. The sample size of 2418 participants included 129 with re

Modeled associations between university physical education mechanisms and students' mental health.

Mental health issues among students are becoming increasingly serious, and physical exercise is closely linked to both physical and mental health. Therefore, there is a correlation between physical education and students' physical and mental well-being. When examining the relationship between physical education mechanisms in higher education institutions and students' mental health, fluctuations such as individual differences often appear in the data. To address this issue, this paper proposes the "Sparrow Search Tree Network" (SSTNet), a model that employs the "Sparrow Search Algorithm" (SSA)

Associations between mental health and disease severity in individuals with psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis and mental health are closely intertwined; however, certain aspects remain underexplored. Thus, continued research on this topic is important to deepen our understanding. OBJECTIVES: To explore the mental health of individuals with psoriasis - specifically depressive symptoms, mental functioning, stress symptoms and coping strategies - and to find associations with physical manifestations of psoriasis. METHODS: A cross-sectional sample of 214 individuals with psoriasis (107 with illness duration >16 years and 107 with illness duration ≤16 years; cut-off: median) complet

Associations between compulsive exercise and mental health constructs in eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive exercise (CE) is commonly observed in eating disorders (ED) and is associated with a more severe clinical picture. Including 3105 participants from the Eating Disorders Genetics Initiative-Sweden, the aim of this cross-sectional study was to expand the knowledge of how CE relates to ED symptoms and other core psychological features. METHODS: Through multiple linear regression analyses, we investigated simple and unique associations between CE, measured with the Compulsive Exercise Test (CET) including its subscales and ED symptoms, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) sy

Developmental Timing of Associations Among Parenting, Brain Architecture, and Mental Health.

IMPORTANCE: Parenting is associated with brain development and long-term health outcomes, although whether these associations depend on the developmental timing of exposure remains understudied. Identifying these sensitive periods can inform when and how parenting is associated with neurodevelopment and risk for mental illness. OBJECTIVE: To characterize how harsh and warm parenting during early, middle, and late childhood are associated with brain architecture during adolescence and, in turn, psychiatric symptoms in early adulthood during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIP

Mental health of clinic-attending Syrian refugee women in Jordan: associations between social ecological risks factors and mental health symptoms.

BACKGROUND: The mental health of refugee women is often affected by multiple risk factors in their social ecology. Assessing these risk factors is foundational in determining potential areas for intervention. We used the social ecological model to examine risk factors associated with self-reported mental health symptoms among clinic-attending Syrian refugee women in Jordan. We hypothesize that individual (older age, unmarried, have more children under 18, difficulty reading/writing with ease), interpersonal (intimate partner violence [IPV]), community and societal level risk factors (greater n

The associations between suicidality and mental health factors and pain interference in veterans being referred to primary care mental health integration.

In veterans being referred to a primary care-mental health integration (PCMHI) program, the Behavioral Health Laboratory, we sought to identify correlates of suicidal ideation severity and suicide attempts using the ideation-to-action framework among pain interference, psychiatric disorders, and treatment factors. Veterans (n = 17,176) referred to the Behavioral Health Laboratory received a structured assessment that included past-year suicidal thoughts and behaviors, psychiatric symptoms, substance use, psychotropic medication use, and mental health treatment utilization. Nearly 50% of partic

Associations of adverse childhood experiences with mental health and behaviors among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Mental health and behavioral problems among adolescents are growing public health concerns, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Bangladesh. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are key contributors to adolescent mental health and behavioral problems, yet evidence from LMIC contexts remains limited. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of mental health and behavioral problems and their associations with ACEs among Bangladeshi adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1,159 adolescents using multistage sampling. Data were col

Associations of pelvic floor dysfunction and postnatal mental health: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum mental health conditions are common and can have devastating effects for both mother and infant. Adverse birth outcomes increase the risk of postnatal mental health conditions. Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is a common adverse pregnancy outcome that may be a risk factor for postnatal mental health conditions. There are many studies reporting associations between PFD and postnatal mental health conditions, but no reports have synthesised the current literature as it relates to pregnancy and the postpartum period. METHODS: A research librarian conducted systematic litera

Mental Health Trajectories of Fathers Following Very Preterm Birth: Associations With Parenting.

OBJECTIVE: Mothers of infants born very preterm (VPT) are at high risk of mental health difficulties. However, less is known about the course of fathers' depressive and anxiety symptoms over time, and the implications this may have for early parenting behaviors. METHODS: In total, 100 fathers of 125 infants born VPT (<30 weeks' gestation) completed questionnaires assessing depressive and anxiety symptoms shortly after their infant's birth, and when their infant reached term-equivalent age, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months' corrected age. At 12 months' corrected age, fathers' parenting behavi
