Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a severe complication of diabetes and the leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, DKD treatment remains challenging owing to its complex etiology and unclear pathogenesis. Recent reports of the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antifibrotic, and regenerative properties of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) indicate that they may serve as potential novel treatments for kidney disease-particularly DKD. However, current MSC-based therapies for DKD are at the initial clinical stage of research with the precise underlying mechanisms requiring further inve

BACKGROUND/AIM: Anosmia, a serious condition that affects the sense of smell, has no universally agreed-upon treatment. Adult stem cells are considered a potential option for treating anosmia. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of mesenchymal stem cells derived from different tissues in an anosmic mouse model induced by 3-methylindole (3-MI).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our study, 36 mice with 3-MI-induced anosmia were divided into subgroups. Anosmia was confirmed by performing a food-finding test (FFT) in each group. Intranasal phosphate-buffered saline was administered to the first grou

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been a feature of stem cell research since the early 1990s. Despite long-standing questions concerning the identity, characteristics, physiological functions, and potential therapeutic uses of these cells, MSC studies are now published more frequently than those of any other stem cell type. Over the past decade, this increase in the MSC literature is attributable almost entirely to publications by scientists in China. Reviewing the history and present state of MSC research, we explore why this might be and propose steps that stakeholders in China and other co

The multipotent mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs), initially discovered from bone marrow in 1976, have been identified in nearly all tissues of human body now. The multipotency of MSCs allows them to give rise to osteocytes, chondrocytes, adipocytes, and other lineages. Moreover, armed with the immunomodulation capacity and tumor-homing property, MSCs are of special relevance for cell-based therapies in the treatment of cancer. However, hampered by lack of knowledge about the controversial roles that MSC plays in the crosstalk with tumors, limited progress has been made with regard to tran

Perianal fistulizing Crohn's disease (PFCD) is associated with significant morbidity and might negatively impact the quality of life of CD patients. In the last two decades, the management of PFCD has evolved in terms of the multidisciplinary approach involving gastroenterologists and colorectal surgeons. However, the highest fistula healing rates, even combining surgical and anti-TNF agents, reaches 50% of treated patients. More recently, the administration of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have shown notable promising results in the treatment of PFCD. The aim of this review is to describe the

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells capable of differentiating into any mesenchymal tissue, including bone, cartilage, muscle, and fat. MSC differentiation can be influenced by a variety of stimuli, including environmental and mechanical stimulation, scaffold physical properties, or applied loads. Numerous studies have evaluated the effects of vibration or cyclic tensile strain on MSCs towards developing a mechanically based method of differentiation, but there is no consensus between studies and each investigation uses different culture conditions, which also influence MSC fat

Achieving satisfactory reconstruction of bone remains an important goal in orthopedic and dental conditions such as bone trauma, osteoporosis, arthritis, osteonecrosis, and periodontitis. Appropriate temporal and spatial differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is essential for postnatal bone regeneration. Additionally, an acute inflammatory response is crucial at the onset of bone repair, while an adaptive immune response has important implications during late bone remodeling. Various reports have indicated bidirectional interactions between MSCs and inflammatory cells or molecules. F

While treatments have been developed to combat stroke, such as intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator and endovascular recanalization therapies, their ability to decrease the long-term disability that accompanies stroke is limited. Currently, stem cell research focused on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). MSCs are multipotent, nonhematopoietic stem cells found in the stromal fraction of the bone marrow, along with the connective tissue of most organs. MSCs are an increasingly appealing cell source due to the relative ease in which they can be retrieved, developed, and handled in vit

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most prevalent joint diseases with prominent symptoms affecting the daily life of millions of middle aged and elderly people. Despite this, there are no successful medical interventions that can prevent the progressive destruction of OA joints. The onset of pathological changes in OA is associated with deviant activity of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), the multipotent precursors of connective tissue cells that reside in joints. Current therapies for OA have resulted in poor clinical outcomes without repairing the damaged cartilage. Intra-articular delivery of

The pandemic of cardiovascular disease is continuously expanding as the result of changing life styles and diets throughout the Old and New World. Immediate intervention therapy saves the lives of many patients after acute myocardial infarction (MI). However, for many this comes at the price of adverse cardiac remodeling and heart failure. Currently, no conventional therapy can prevent the negative aftermath of MI and alternative treatments are warranted. Therefore, cardiac stem cell therapy has been put forward over the past decade, albeit with modest successes. Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) a

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a clinical syndrome of acute respiratory failure presenting with hypoxemia and bilateral pulmonary infiltrates, most often in the setting of pneumonia, sepsis, or major trauma. The pathogenesis of ARDS involves lung endothelial injury, alveolar epithelial injury, and the accumulation of protein-rich fluid and cellular debris in the alveolar space. No pharmacologic therapy has so far proved effective. A potential strategy involves cell-based therapies, including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Herein we review basic properties of MSCs, their use in p

Until recently, the concept of treating the injured or failing heart by generating new functional myocardium was considered physiologically impossible. Major scientific strides in the past few years have challenged the concept that the heart is a post-mitotic organ, leading to the hypothesis that cardiac regeneration could be therapeutically achieved. Bone marrow-derived adult stem cells were among the first cell populations that were used to test this hypothesis. Animal studies and early clinical experience support the concept that therapeutically delivered mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) safel

To study the biodistribution of MSCs, we labeled adult murine C57BL/6 MSCs with firefly luciferase and DsRed2 fluorescent protein using nonviral Sleeping Beauty transposons and coinfused labeled MSCs with bone marrow into irradiated allogeneic recipients. Using in vivo whole-body imaging, luciferase signals were shown to be increased between weeks 3 and 12. Unexpectedly, some mice with the highest luciferase signals died and all surviving mice developed foci of sarcoma in their lungs. Two mice also developed sarcomas in their extremities. Common cytogenetic abnormalities were identified in tum

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are bone marrow populating cells, different from hematopoietic stem cells, which possess an extensive proliferative potential and ability to differentiate into various cell types, including: osteocytes, adipocytes, chondrocytes, myocytes, cardiomyocytes and neurons. MSCs play a key role in the maintenance of bone marrow homeostasis and regulate the maturation of both hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells. The cells are characterized by the expression of numerous surface antigens, but none of them appears to be exclusively expressed on MSCs. Apart from bone mar

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) continue to drive innovation in regenerative medicine, yet the field is undergoing a critical evolution from the early concept of cellular engraftment to complex paracrine-mediated tissue repair. This review systematically evaluates the core scientific questions defining this transition, highlighting the latest advancements in MSC biology and the rapidly expanding therapeutic frontier of MSC-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs). We critically appraise recent progress in decoding MSC therapeutic mechanisms, specifically their profound capacity for immun

Periodontal mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) play a crucial role in maintaining periodontium homeostasis and in tissue repair. However, little is known about how periodontal MSCs in vivo respond under periodontal disease conditions, posing a challenge for periodontium tissue regeneration. In this study, Gli1 was used as a periodontal MSC marker and combined with a Gli1-cre ERT2 mouse model for lineage tracing to investigate periodontal MSC fate in an induced periodontitis model. Our findings show significant changes in the number and contribution of Gli1+ MSCs within the inflamed periodontium. Th
