Retrograde superior mesenteric artery stenting for acute mesenteric arterial thrombosis.

Retrograde superior mesenteric artery stenting (ROMS) represents a significant development in the treatment of acute mesenteric ischemia. Compared to traditional surgical mesenteric bypass, ROMS is a less invasive technique that avoids many complications associated with emergent mesenteric bypass. This case report illustrates that retrograde superior mesenteric artery (SMA) stenting is an option for the treatment of acute mesenteric ischemia for patients in extremis.

[Operative revascularization of visceral arteries in chronic mesenteric ischemia].

Chronic mesenteric ischemia (CMI) is mostly the result of atherosclerotic occlusive processes of unpaired mesenteric arteries. Operative procedures are preferred in cases of occlusion of a long vessel segments and/or highly calcified stenoses near the ostium. Frequently, bypasses are constucted from the aorta to visceral arteries and autologous veins should be preferred. Due to atherosclerotic alterations aortic bypass anastomoses are difficult and prone to complications. Based on case descriptions a surgical technique is presented that simplifies the aortovisceral artery bypass procedure. In

Vasomotion of mice mesenteric arteries during low oxygen levels.

BACKGROUND: Ischemia of intestinal organs is a main cause of complications in surgical intensive care patients. Changes in the tonus of arteries contributing to vascular resistance play an important role in the determination of blood flow and thus oxygen supply of various abdominal organs. It is generally acknowledged that hypoxia itself is able to alter arterial tonus and thus blood flow. METHODS: The present study compared the effects of various degrees of hypoxia on second-order mesenteric arteries from male C57BL/6J mice. After vessel isolation and preparation, we assessed vessel diameter

Fetal Sheep Mesenteric Resistance Arteries: Functional and Structural Maturation.

BACKGROUND: Fetal blood pressure increases during late gestation; however, the underlying vascular mechanisms are unclear. Knowledge of the maturation of resistance arteries is important to identify the mechanisms and vulnerable periods for the development of vascular dysfunction in adulthood. METHODS: We determined the functional and structural development of fetal sheep mesenteric resistance arteries using wire myography and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Media mass and distribution of myosin heavy-chain isoforms showed no changes between 0.7 (100 ± 3 days) and 0.9 (130 ± 3 days) gestation

Strategic Inferior Mesenteric Artery Revascularization for an Inferior Mesenteric Artery Aneurysm Associated with Chronic Occlusion of the Celiac and Superior Mesenteric Arteries.

INTRODUCTION: Inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) aneurysms are extremely rare visceral artery aneurysms and may develop secondary to chronic mesenteric occlusive disease. The optimal revascularization strategy remains controversial when both the celiac artery (CA) and superior mesenteric artery (SMA) are occluded. CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old man with a 3.0-cm IMA aneurysm associated with chronic total occlusion of both the CA and SMA due to severe aortic calcification was referred to our institution. To minimize the risk of mesenteric ischemia during planned aortic surgery, a staged approa

A middle mesenteric artery.

In 114 cases of the transverse colon isolated from cadavers (50 male, 64 female), anatomical examinations of the arterial system of the colon were performed. Arteriograms were obtained after dissecting and contrasting the colonic vessels with Mixobar contrast. In one case, on arteriography of the colon with its mesentery isolated from a 55-year-old male cadaver, a rare anatomical variant was found. The third mesenteric artery originated directly from the aorta-halfway between the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries and ascended obliquely in the direction of the hepatic flexure of the col

The middle mesenteric artery.

Angiography was performed in a 70-year-old man because of a recurrence of massive hemochezia. The angiogram demonstrated a third mesenteric artery, arising from the aorta between the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries and supplying the splenic flexure. Although many variations of colonic arterial supply have been described, those involving vessels originating from the aorta separate from the celiac, superior mesenteric, or inferior mesenteric arteries are extremely rate.

Inferior mesenteric artery aneurysm in the setting of celiac and superior mesenteric artery occlusion.

Inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) aneurysm is a rare type of visceral aneurysm. We present the case of a 77-year-old woman with an IMA aneurysm in the setting of chronic complete occlusion of the origins of her celiac artery and superior mesenteric artery. The patient was managed successfully with surgical excision of the IMA aneurysm with an end-to-side anastomosis of the IMA to the left common iliac artery. The case report is followed by a discussion based on a literature review of the few previously reported occurrences of IMA aneurysm.

Food Restriction Augmented Alpha1-Adrenergic Mediated Contraction in Mesenteric Arteries.

Food restriction (FR) enhances sensitivity to cardiopulmonary reflexes and α1-adrenoreceptors in females in the presence of hypotension. However, the effect of FR on cardiopulmonary and vascular function in males is not well-understood. This study examines the effects of FR on cardiopulmonary, isolated arterial function, and potential underlying mechanisms. Male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into 3 groups and monitored for 5 weeks: (1) control (n = 30), (2) 20% food reduction (FR20, n = 30), and (3) 40% food reduction (FR40, n = 30). Non-invasive blood pressure was measured tw

Vasodilatory Effect of Phellinus linteus Extract in Rat Mesenteric Arteries.

Phellinus linteus is a well-known medicinal mushroom that is widely used in Asian countries. In several experimental models, Phellinus linteus extracts were reported to have various biological effects, including anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, hepatoprotective, anti-diabetic, neuroprotective, and anti-angiogenic activity. In the present study, several bioactive compounds, including palmitic acid ethyl ester and linoleic acid, were identified in Phellinus linteus. The intermediate-conductance calcium-activated potassium channel (IKCa) plays an important role in the regulation of the vascular sm

Simultaneous Measurements of Tension and Free H2S in Mesenteric Arteries.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), in addition to nitric oxide and carbon monoxide, is the third gasotransmitter and known to cause relaxation in peripheral arteries. Here we describe a method that allows simultaneous measurement of contractility in arteries mounted in an isometric wire myograph and the concentration of free H2S in the lumen of the artery as well as in the organ bath. This method can be used to directly correlate how much free H2S is needed to cause relaxation, which previously has been difficult to answer as H2S can be found in many different forms.

Mechanisms of simvastatin-induced vasodilatation of rat superior mesenteric arteries.

Independent of its lipid-lowering properties, simvastatin (Sim) induces vasorelaxation; however, the underlying mechanisms have remained elusive. The aim of the present study was to investigate the vasorelaxant effects of Sim on rat superior mesenteric arteries and the mechanisms involved. The isometric tension of rat superior mesenteric arterial rings was recorded in vitro on a myograph. The results showed that Sim concentration-dependently relaxed the superior mesenteric artery rings with endothelium pre-contracted by phenylephrine hydrochloride [maximum relaxation (Emax)=51.05±4.09%; negati

Characterization of Perivascular Nerve Distribution in Rat Mesenteric Small Arteries.

The distribution pattern of perivascular nerves in some branches of rat mesenteric arteries was studied. Mesenteric arteries isolated from 8-week-old Wistar rats were divided into the 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-order branches. The distribution of perivascular nerves in each branch was immunohistochemically evaluated using antibodies against neuropeptide Y (NPY), tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), substance P (SP), and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). The density of NPY-, TH-, CGRP-, and SP-like immunoreactive (LI) nerves in the 2nd and 3rd branches was significan

Conservative treatment of spontaneous and isolated dissection of mesenteric arteries.

BACKGROUND: Isolated and spontaneous dissection of mesenteric arteries is a rare entity; a little more than 50 cases have been reported in medical literature. There is no therapeutic consensus concerning this type of lesion. METHODS: In this study, we report the results of our treatment based on a conservative approach. This retrospective study concerns eight patients with dissection of the celiac trunk and/or of the upper mesenteric artery (UMA) who were treated between 2002 and 2006. Because these patients were not presenting with acute intestinal ischemia diagnosed by clinical examination
