[On the effect of mebendazole on metacestodes of Mesocestoides corti and Echinococcus multilocularis (author's transl)].

Mebendazole (5-benzoyl-2-methoxycarbonylaminobenzimidazole) was highly effective against tetrathydridia of Mesocestoides corti in the peritoneal cavity, liver and in the subcutis of mice when administered orally in the food (450 or 465 ppm) from days 7 or 40/50 post infectionem (p.i.) for 10 or 20 days in total doses of approximately 660-1660 mg/kg body weight (b.w.). All tetrathyridia were killed when treatment began at day 7 p.i., and only some survived when medication was started on days 40/50 p.i. A treatment of 5 days was only partially effective. In experiments with Echinococcus multiloc

Survival analysis of dogs diagnosed with canine peritoneal larval cestodiasis (Mesocestoides spp.).

Canine peritoneal larval cestodiasis (CPLC) is a poorly understood disease of dogs caused by asexual multiplication of larval Mesocestoides spp. tapeworms. In this study, we examined the descriptive statistics and survival characteristics of 60 dogs diagnosed with CPLC from 1989 to 2009. Clinically affected dogs presented with ascites (60%), anorexia/weight loss (42%), vomiting (23%), diarrhea (9%) and tachypnea (9%), while subclinical infections (22%) were incidentally detected, typically during ovariohysterectomy or neuter. Survival at 6 months and 1 year post-diagnosis were 72.3% and 60.5%,

Mesocestoides sp. in Wild Northern Bobwhite ( Colinus virginianus) and Scaled Quail ( Callipepla squamata).

Mesocestoides spp. have a cosmopolitan distribution with zoonotic potential. Mesocestoides tetrathyridia were found under the pericardial sac, on the surface of the crop, and in the peritoneal cavity of a hunter-harvested Northern Bobwhite ( Colinus virginianus) and a Scaled Quail ( Callipepla squamata) collected during the 2016-17 quail hunting season in northwest and southern Texas, US respectively. Molecular analysis indicated that the tetrathyridia from the birds likely belonged to an undescribed species and are identical to pretetrathyridium stages recently found in Scincella lateralis sk

Normal and aberrant Mesocestoides tetrathyridia from Crocidura spp. (Soricimorpha) in Corsica and Spain.

Tetrathyridia of Mesocestoides sp. were collected from the body cavities of the shrews (Insectivora), Crocidura russula, in Valencia, Spain and Crocidura suaveolens on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, France. Specimens were processed by routine microscopic and histological techniques, including examination with brightfield, phase-contrast, and differential-interference-contrast optics. Most tetrathyridia were clustered together inside host-derived fibrotic capsules, but some occurred free in the body cavity. All specimens examined from both locations had solid hindbodies, i.e., lacking a p

Molecular identification of Mesocestoides spp. from intermediate hosts (rodents) in central Europe (Poland).

Genus Mesocestoides is a representative of the small cyclophyllidean family Mesocestoididae that is found parasitizing the small intestine of carnivores. The life cycle of cestodes from this genus is complex and requires two intermediate hosts. Cysticercoids are produced in the first intermediate host (oribatid mites), which when eaten by the second intermediate host (mainly rodents, but also other mammalian species, birds, reptiles, or amphibians) form tetrathyridia in the body cavity. Because of the rich history of nomenclatural evaluation of Mesocestoididae, the taxonomic status within the

Pathological examination of Ym1, a chitinase family protein, in Mesocestoides corti-infected mice.

Mammals express a set of chitinase family proteins, comprising chitinases, which can hydrolyze chitin, and chitinase-like proteins without the chitinase activity but possessing chitin-binding properties. They act as endogenous lectins, regulating various physiological/pathological events. Ym1, originally identified as an eosinophil chemotactic factor or a macrophage-derived protein in parasite-infected mice, is a rodent-specific chitinase-like protein. Ym1 is also purified from eosinophilic crystals formed in the lung and urinary system in various disease models. We previously reported that ma

Distribution and prevalence of Taenia hydatigena, Taenia multiceps, and Mesocestoides spp. in Mongolian sheepdogs.

Gastrointestinal parasite infections in livestock and companion animals in Mongolia have not been investigated sufficiently. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of cyclophyllid cestodes (Taeniidae and Mesocestoididae) in Mongolian sheepdogs using copro-DNA analysis. Sheepdog fecal samples (n = 1242) were collected from five ecological zones (mountain taiga, forest-steppe, steppe, desert-steppe, and desert) and four geographical regions (Western, Khangai, Central, and Eastern) within 20 of the country's 21 provinces. Among the 1242 samples, 201 (16.2%) tested positive for mitochondrial

Comparative proteomics of the larval and adult stages of the model cestode parasite Mesocestoides corti.

UNLABELLED: Mesocestoides corti is a widely used model for the study of cestode biology, and its transition from the larval tetrathyridium (TT) stage to the strobilated, adult worm (ST) stage can be induced and followed in vitro. Here, a proteomic approach was used to describe and compare M. corti TT and ST protein repertories. Overall, 571 proteins were identified, 238 proteins in TT samples and 333 proteins in ST samples. Among the identified proteins, 207 proteins were shared by TTs and STs, while 157 were stage-specific, being 31 exclusive from TTs, and 126 from STs. Functional annotation

Immunity and immune modulation elicited by the larval cestode Mesocestoides vogae and its products.

Larval cestodes (metacestodes) induce long-lasting infections leading to considerable pathology in humans and livestock. Their survival is typically associated with Th2-biased immune responses and immunosuppressive effects and depends on the parasite's ability to excrete/secrete antigens with immunoregulatory properties. Here, Mesocestoides vogae, a natural parasite of mice, is proposed as a new model species for the identification and characterization of cestode-derived immunomodulatory factors. We followed the kinetics of immune parameters after infection with M. vogae or exposure to their e

Tetrathyridia of Mesocestoides lineatus in Chinese snakes and their adults recovered from experimental animals.

Morphological characteristics of Mesocestoides lineatus tetrathyridia collected from Chinese snakes and their adults recovered from experimental animals were studied. The tetrathyridia were detected mainly in the mesentery of 2 snake species, Agkistrodon saxatilis (25%) and Elaphe schrenckii (20%). They were 1.73 by 1.02 mm in average size and had an invaginated scolex with 4 suckers. Adult tapeworms were recovered from 2 hamsters and 1 dog, which were orally infected with 5-10 larvae each. Adults from hamsters were about 32 cm long and those from a dog were about 58 cm long. The scolex was 0.

Suppression of the growth and metastasis of mouse melanoma by Taenia crassiceps and Mesocestoides corti tapeworms.

Cancer is still one of the leading causes of death, with an estimated 19.3 million new cases every year. Our paper presents the tumor-suppressing effect of Taenia crassiceps and Mesocestoides corti on B16F10 melanoma, the intraperitoneal application of which followed the experimental infection with these tapeworms, resulting in varying degrees of effectiveness in two strains of mice. In the case of M. corti-infected ICR mice, a strong tumor growth suppression occurred, which was accompanied by a significant reduction in the formation of distant metastases in the liver and lung. Tapeworm-infect

In vitro culture of Mesocestoides corti metacestodes and isolation of immunomodulatory excretory-secretory products.

Cestode-mediated diseases hold the interesting feature of persisting metacestode larvae dwelling within the host tissues, in the midst of the immune response. Excretory-secretory (ES) products of the metacestode larval stage modulate the host immune response and modify the outcome of the disease. Therefore, isolation and analysis of axenic metacestode ES products are crucial to study their properties. Here, we report the development of a system for long-term in vitro cultivation of the metacestode of the parasitic cestode Mesocestoides corti (syn. Mesocestoides vogae). Although feeder cells an

Action of cyclosporin A on the tapeworms Hymenolepis microstoma, H. diminuta and Mesocestoides corti in vivo.

The in vivo activity of two cyclosporins, cyclosporin A (CsA) and a non-immunosuppressive derivative of dihydrocylosporin A (DHCsA-d) against three tapeworms, Hymenolepis microstoma, H. diminuta and Mesocestoides corti, has been assessed. CsA reversibly reduced the dry weight of H. microstoma in the mouse, briefly delayed oviposition and had a statistically significant effect on worm numbers recovered. Oral and subcutaneous treatments of both CsA and DHCsA-d were effective in reducing worm weight; juvenile worms were most susceptible but worms of all ages responded to drug by a dramatic reduct

The pathology induced in laboratory rats by metacestodes of Taenia crassiceps and Mesocestoides corti (Cestoda).

Sprague-Dawley rats were infected by intraperitoneal injection with either the cysticerci of Taenia crassiceps or the tetrathyridia of Mesocestoides corti. Both species of metacestodes reproduce asexually in the peritoneal cavity. The effect of T. crassiceps upon the rats was to cause chronic inflammation of the peritoneum, fibrous adhesions between the visceral organs and hyperplasia of the gut mesenteries which became extended into a large sac-like structure. Dead parasites surrounded by white calcareous material were found free in the peritoneum and attached to the inner body wall and visce

Molecular identification of Mesocestoides sp. metacestodes in a captive gold-handed tamarin (Saguinus midas).

Mesocestoides spp. are tapeworms harbored in the intestine of many domestic and wild carnivores, birds of prey and, rarely, of humans. The life cycle is assumed to involve three hosts and the metacestode juvenile stage (tetrathyridium) may reproduce asexually, provoking severe systemic infections. In the present study, a case of a peritoneal infection by Mesocestoides sp. occurred in a captive gold-handed tamarin (Saguinus midas) is described. Phylogenetic positions based on CO1 and 12S loci were analysed to describe in details this unusual finding of Mesocestoides in a callitrichid monkey. Th

Experimental murine model of neurocysticercosis: first report of cerebellum as a location for Mesocestoides corti tetrathyridia.

Neurocysticercosis is a parasitic disease caused by encysted larvae of Taenia solium in the human central nervous system. Cysts mainly affect the cerebral hemispheres, although they can also be found in ventricles, basal cisterns, and subarachnoid spaces, and rarely in the cerebellum. Given the impossibility of studying the disease in human patients, Cardona et al. (1999) developed a mouse model of neurocysticercosis, using Mesocestoides corti, a closely related cestode. This allows us to study the parasite-host relationship and the mechanisms involved in the disease, in order to improve the t

Environmental determinants of the spatial distribution of Mesocestoides spp. and sensitivity of flotation method for the diagnosis of mesocestoidosis.

Mesocestoides spp. are zoonotic cestodes of wild and domesticated carnivores. Although the adult stages are relatively harmless intestinal parasites, the metacestode stages (tetrathyridia) can be responsible for life-threatening peritonitis and pleuritis in several species including dogs, cats, non-human primates and probably man. The aim of the present study was to reveal the spatial distribution pattern of Mesocestoides spp. in the most important final hosts, red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), to analyse the relationship of these patterns with landscape and climate by geographical information system

Nonspecific immunomodulation influences resistance of mice to experimental infection with Mesocestoides corti and Ascaris suum.

The influence of nonspecific immunomodulation on the course of experimental infection was examined in larval cestodosis (Mesocestoides corti) and ascaridosis (Ascaris suum) in mice. Immunosuppressive treatment (with azathioprine or hydrocortisone) resulted in a decrease of resistance in both models. The subsequent administration of T-activin to immunosuppressed mice led to the restoration of resistance to a level equal to that of untreated control mice. The administration of different immunomodulators partially protected mice against M. corti (T-activin, thymomodulin) or A. suum (T-activin, th

Disseminated proliferative mesocestoidosis caused by Mesocestoides vogae (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidae) in a French bulldog in Japan.

This report describes a case of disseminated proliferative mesocestoidosis in a French bulldog from Aichi, Japan. In July 2023, the dog presented with chronic enteritis, and histological examination of the endoscopic biopsy specimen revealed parasites with suckers. Three months later, numerous tetrathyridia were detected in the inguinal mass. In April 2024, polymorphic tetrathyridia were detected on the visceral organs. These parasites were identified as Mesocestoides vogae (Cyclophylidea: Mesocestoididae) based on morphological features and sequence analyses. In Japan, M. vogae has only been
