Efficacy of different topical spironolactone treatments for acne vulgaris: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Topical spironolactone could serve as an alternative to oral therapy for acne vulgaris, but its efficacy requires further validation. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of topical spironolactone monotherapy for acne vulgaris in systemically healthy patients. METHODS: A PRISMA-compliant meta-analysis was conducted, searching PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Medline for controlled trials on exclusive topical spironolactone use. RESULTS: Four trials (N=212) met criteria. Compared to baseline, the 5% spironolactone gel significantly reduced both Acne Severity

The efficacy of combined phototherapy with topical therapy in vitiligo: a network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The comparative effects of phototherapy and topical therapy in patients with vitiligo remain unclear. A network meta-analysis (NMA) was conducted to assess which combination therapy was more beneficial for patients with vitiligo. METHODS: This study analyzed phototherapy, including narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) and 308-nm excimer laser/light (EL) combined with topical therapies. Randomized controlled trials were sourced from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library. Data analysis was based on a random-effects model, and surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA) curves employed

Topical medications for the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis: A network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The present network meta-analysis aims to answer the question "what is the best topical intervention for the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis that can provide an acceptable pain relief and promote wound healing?" METHODS: From inception to October 2022, PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched to identify all potentially eligible randomized controlled trials. The primary outcomes were pain scores and/or healing time, while the secondary outcomes were the associated side effects. The Bayesian network meta-analysis

Topical ketotifen treatment for allergic conjunctivitis: a systematic review and Meta-analysis.

AIM: To assess the efficacy of ketotifen in treating allergic conjunctivitis. METHODS: A systematic search of systematic reviews and Meta-analyses was conducted on the PubMed and Web Science of Science until October 2021 to address this knowledge gap. Mean difference with 95%CI and P values were used to assess the efficacy of ketotifen. The heterogeneity (I 2) was used to evaluate the impact of heterogeneity. RESULTS: Eight randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 1589 patients were included in this Meta-analysis. The results revealed that after treating with ketotifen, itching (MD=-0.9

Peripheral venous catheter-related phlebitis: A meta-analysis of topical treatment.

AIM: To systematically evaluate the efficacy of different topical treatments for PVC-related phlebitis in hospital in-patients. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: A selection was made of experimental and quasi-experimental studies published in English or Spanish. These should provide data on the degree of phlebitis, pain and infiltration (means and standard deviations, mainly) of hospitalized patients with phlebitis secondary to peripheral venous catheter. All those studies that reflected systemic or exclusive prevention treatments were excluded. Searches were from incep

Topical calcineurin inhibitors and risk of lymphoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs) tacrolimus and pimecrolimus have been used widely as corticosteroid-sparing agents in treating various cutaneous diseases. However, the association between TCIs and risk of malignancy remains controversial. By systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to investigate the association between TCIs and lymphoma. Eligible studies in online databases were identified from the date of inception to August 30, 2020. To assess the outcome of TCI-related risk of lymphoma, analysis of cohort studies comparing the incidence of lymphoma with and without treatment

Evaluating Topical Antifibrinolytics in Cardiac Surgery: A Systematic Review, Meta-Analysis, and Trial Sequential Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Lysine analog antifibrinolytics (LAAF) like tranexamic acid (TXA) and aminocaproic acid (EACA) reduce intraoperative blood loss, especially in cardiac surgery where bleeding risks are high. These LAAFs inhibit fibrinolysis and have been proven to decrease bleeding and transfusion volume. In cardiac surgery, frequent transfusions raise the risk of infections, extend hospital stays and reoperations, and carry higher morbidity and mortality. Current guidelines recommend intravenous antifibrinolytics; however, the objective of this review was to determine whether topical administrati

Topical Heparin in Burns: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Studies.

Burns are associated with significant inflammation and pain. Topical agents like heparin can modulate these processes and improve outcomes. Our study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using topical heparin (TH) in patients with burns. On August 7, 2024, we conducted a literature search on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Only randomized controlled studies were included. Data were extracted on analgesic drug usage, bleeding events, sepsis, visual analog scale pain scores, length of hospital stay, and mortality. Statistical analysis was performed using R software (version 4.4.1), heteroge

Topical Tacrolimus in the Management of High-Risk Keratoplasty: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Corneal transplantation is a frequently performed procedure for human eye transplants. In low-risk conditions such as keratoconus and Fuch's dystrophy, corneal transplantation has a high success rate due to the immune advantages in support of the cornea. Major risk factors for corneal graft rejection include: atopy, chemical burn, prolonged herpes infection, infectious leukoma, trauma, prior transplantation, active inflammation, and corneal neovascularization. Treatments against lymphangiogenic bacteria and anti-angiogenic bacteria are two strategies to reduce corneal graft rejection. The prim

The efficacy of topical prostaglandin analogs for hair loss: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Prostaglandin analogs have been found to have more versatile uses: treatment of open-angle glaucoma, high intraocular pressure, vitiligo, and other treatments. And prostaglandin analogs have been found to have an important role in the hair growth cycle. However, prostaglandin analogs have not been sufficiently studied for hair (including hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows) regeneration. In this study, a systematic review and meta-analysis of topical prostaglandin analogs on hair loss was performed. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this meta-analysis is to determine the efficacy and safety of

Topical corticosteroids for phimosis in children: a network meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Corticosteroids and hyaluronidase are trialed for treating phimosis in children. We carried out the present network meta-analysis to compare the therapeutic effect of these drugs. METHODS: Electronic databases were searched for appropriate randomized clinical trials. Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) was used as the effect estimate. A random-effects model was used for generating the pooled estimates. Rankogram plot was used for ranking the drugs. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Proportions of patients with remission (partial/complete) and with complete remission. RES
