Postprandial metabolism with 1,3-diacylglycerol oil versus equivalent intakes of long-chain and medium-chain triacylglycerol oils.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed the ability of novel lipid structures including medium-chain triacylglycerols (MCTs) and 1,3-diacylglycerol (DG) oil to lower postprandial triacylglycerol (TG) elevation and increase hepatic fat oxidation when substituted for dietary TG, which may be useful in the prevention and treatment of obesity and other related metabolic conditions, such as dyslipidemias. METHODS: This double-blind, randomized, crossover trial evaluated the effects of an oral fat load containing DG or MCTs compared with equivalent intakes of long-chain triacylglycerols (LCTs) on the postprandial m

Bidirectional associations of zinc supplement intake with biological ageing interacted by metabolic equivalent of task: A large-scale population-based Biobank study.

BACKGROUND: The association of zinc intake with biological ageing and whether physical exercise modifies this association remain uncertain. We aimed to explore the correlations between zinc intake and biological ageing and to evaluate the modifying effect of physical exercise. METHODS: Data were extracted from 68,947 participants in the Biobank. Daily zinc intake and biological age were calculated using standard equations, and physical exercise was measured by the metabolic equivalent of task (MET) per week. Generalized linear regression models, adjusted for confounding factors, were employed

Comparing the systolic blood pressure per metabolic equivalent response during treadmill and cycle ergometer exercise testing: implications for translating risk cut-offs.

Elevated exercise systolic blood pressure (SBP) predicts future hypertension, but its association with cardiorespiratory fitness (V̇O2peak) can confound risk assessment. Indexing SBP per metabolic equivalent (MET) reduces this influence but whether treadmill-derived thresholds (6.2-9.0 and >9.0 mmHg/MET) translate to cycle ergometry remains unclear. Healthy adults (22 ± 4 years, 49% female) completed maximal treadmill (n = 143) or cycle (n = 73) tests, with 21 completing both. Despite lower V̇O2peak during cycling, peak SBP was similar, producing a higher SBP/MET slope in between-group (p = 0.

Metabolic Engineering of Clostridium tyrobutyricum for High-Yield n-Butanol Production by Increasing Intracellular Reducing Equivalent with NADPH-Dependent 3-Hydroxybutyryl-CoA Dehydrogenase.

Clostridium tyrobutyricum was engineered to overexpress adhE2 encoding the aldehyde/alcohol dehydrogenase and an exogenous NADPH-dependent 3-hydroxybutyryl-CoA dehydrogenase from Clostridium kluyveri (Ckhbd) for n-butanol production. In general, large amounts of butyrate, acetate, and ethanol are also produced from glucose when butanol biosynthesis is hindered by limited intracellular NADH pools. In silico flux balance analysis showed that coupling NADP+/NADPH turnover with butanol production increased the reducing equivalent supply and butanol selectivity over ethanol and acids, thus increasi

Radionuclide studies of bone metabolism: do bone uptake and bone plasma clearance provide equivalent measurements of bone turnover?

Quantitative radionuclide imaging using (18)F-fluoride positron emission tomography (18F-PET) or (99m)Tc-methylene diphosphonate ((99m)Tc-MDP) bone scans provides a novel tool for studying regional and whole skeleton bone turnover that complements the information provided by biochemical markers. Radionuclide bone scans can be quantified by measuring either tracer uptake or, if blood sampling is performed, bone plasma clearance. This study examines whether these two methods provide equivalent information about bone turnover. We examined data from two clinical trials of the bone anabolic agent t

The multiple linear regression model: to predict peak metabolic equivalents and peak oxygen pulse in patients with coronary artery disease after percutaneous coronary intervention.

BACKGROUND: The clinical indicators of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) often affect their prognosis. Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) can effectively evaluate the cardiopulmonary ability of CAD patients. The objective of this research was to explore the correlation between some clinical indicators and peak metabolic equivalents (peak METs) and peak oxygen pulse (O2Ppeak) in patients with CAD. Regression equations were further constructed for indicators with significant correlations to predict peak METs and O2Ppeak. METHODS: 152 CAD patients were recruited (M: F = 109:43, ag

Public parks and physical activity among adolescent girls.

OBJECTIVES: Physical activity may be constrained or facilitated by local environments. The availability of neighborhood facilities for physical activity may be particularly relevant for youth, who are unable to drive and whose activity is often limited to the immediate distance they are able to walk or bicycle. Several studies have shown that proximity to recreational facilities and parks is one of the most important predictors of physical activity. Because the United States already has an extensive infrastructure of parks, with 70% of adults indicating that they live within walking distance o

Need to Revise Classification of Physical Activity Intensity in Older Adults? The Use of Estimated METs, Measured METs, and V̇O2 Reserve.

BACKGROUND: Multiples of resting metabolic rate (RMR) are often used to classify physical activity intensity, a concept known as the metabolic equivalent of task (MET). However, the METs metrics may misclassify physical activity intensity in older adults because of age-related changes in RMR and maximal aerobic capacity (V˙O2max). This study aimed to (i) compare classifications of activity intensity by estimated (METsestimated) and measured (METsmeasured) METs and (ii) compare physical activity classified by absolute (METsmeasured) versus relative intensity (%V˙O2Reserve) in older adults. MET

Determination of moderate walking intensity using step rate and VO2 reserve in healthy men.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated step rates (SR) during overground walking to estimate the relative aerobic capacity that corresponds to a moderate intensity. METHODS: The present study utilized a repeated measure, within-subjects design incorporating a counterbalanced order. A total of twenty-three healthy men walked on a 119-meter oval track with artificial turf at self-selected pace (FP), 100, 120, and 140 steps/min for 6 min each while oxygen uptake (VO2), speed (in km/h), distance (in m), and steps (in steps/min) were measured. RESULTS: During FP, participants walked an average cadenc

Moderate-intensity stepping in older adults: insights from treadmill walking and daily living.

BACKGROUND: A step cadence of 100 steps/minute is widely used to define moderate-intensity walking. However, the generalizability of this threshold to different populations needs further research. We investigate moderate-intensity step cadence values during treadmill walking and daily living in older adults. METHODS: Older adults (≥ 60 years) were recruited from urban community venues. Data collection included 7 days of physical activity measured by an activPAL3™ thigh worn device, followed by a laboratory visit involving a 60-min assessment of resting metabolic rate, then a treadmill assessm

Cadence (steps/min) and relative intensity in 61 to 85-year-olds: the CADENCE-Adults study.

BACKGROUND: We previously demonstrated that a heuristic (i.e., evidence-based, rounded yet practical) cadence threshold of ≥ 100 steps/min was associated with absolutely-defined moderate intensity physical activity (i.e., ≥ 3 metabolic equivalents [METs]) in older adults 61-85 years of age. Although it was difficult to ascertain achievement of absolutely-defined vigorous (6 METs) intensity, ≥ 130 steps/min was identified as a defensible threshold for this population. However, little evidence exists regarding cadence thresholds and relatively-defined moderate intensity indicators, including ≥ 6

From movement to METs: A validation of ActTrust® for energy expenditure estimation and physical activity classification in young adults.

Estimating physical activity (PA) levels is a challenging and expensive task. An alternative could be the use of actigraphy devices to estimate PA. This has been previously done to a number of devices, including ActiGraph® GT3X + . In this study, we validated ActTrust® against the widely used GT3X+ and compared activity counts to metabolic equivalents (METs) derived from indirect calorimetry during treadmill walking and running. Fifty-six young adults (34 men, 22 women) participated in controlled effort exercises including light, moderate, vigorous, and very vigorous activity intensities. We d

Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Health Outcomes: A Call to Standardize Fitness Categories.

An inverse association between physical activity or fitness status and health outcomes has been reported by several cohort studies. When fitness categories are established in quartiles or quintiles based on the peak exercise capacity achieved, the association is graded. Although significant health benefits of increased cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) have been uniformly reported, the degree of protection has varied substantially between studies. This variability is likely due to varying methods used to define CRF categories, and not considering age, despite its strong effect on CRF. To amelior

Factors Associated with the Uncoupling of Perceived and Achieved Exercise Capacity in Patients Undergoing Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing.

An objective of the Duke Activity Status Index (DASI) is to standardize assessments of exertional intolerance. However, patient factors associated with inaccurate assessments of exercise capacity with this tool are not well described. Patients who completed the DASI in preparation for a treadmill cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) at our institution from 2022 to 2023 were analyzed. Metabolic equivalents of task (METs) were calculated from the DASI score and measured from CPET. Clinical characteristics were compared using Chi square or Mann-Whitney U tests between those who overestimated vers
