[Dislocation fracture of the base of the 5th metacarpus with hamate involvement (dorso-ulnar flake fracture)].

An uncommon case of a closed dorsal fracture dislocation of the base of the fifth metacarpal bone associated with a flake fracture of the hamate is described. Under general anaesthesia, the dislocation was reduced by traction and direct pressure over the metacarpal base. To maintain the reduction, Kirschner wires were inserted percutaneously.

[Treatment of severe callus of the metacarpus and phalanges. Indications and results apropos of a series of 38 patients].

Severe deformities of metacarpals and phalanges, whether isolated or associated with soft tissues lesions impair the hand function and are to be corrected. The authors initial proposal was the fixation after corrective osteotomy by wiring which have been proved to be suitable in the treatment of recent fractures. This technique was used in 25 cases out of 38 treated malunions with 21 satisfactory results. 4 poor results were related to associated lesions of the soft tissues more than to the osteotomy itself. The other 13 malunions were treated by several techniques arthrodeses, callus resectio

Morphological analysis of third metacarpus cartilage and subchondral bone in Thoroughbred racehorses: An ex vivo study.

Racehorses are exposed to repetitive overload during training and competition, causing joint hyperextension, tissue fatigue, and ultimately skeletal failure. Some degree of bone changes, such as sclerosis, are expected in equine athletes, as adaptation to the biomechanical rigors of training and racing. Understanding the imaging characteristics of the equine joint surface and subchondral bone would allow earlier detection of injuries or adaptation, improving prognosis and training programs. This study sought to describe the joint surface structural patterns and the periarticular structures of

[Traumatic axial dislocation injury of the carpus and metacarpus with triquetrum fracture. Rare entity or typical injury].

Although there are only 39 reports of compression injuries with axial dislocation of the carpus and metacarpus, there are similar patterns of injury. In all cases the dislocation is located either between the first and second or the third and fourth metacarpals and the corresponding carpal bones so that weak points of the carpal arch can be assumed in these regions. Clinical and radiological findings in a 22-year-old patient with dislocation of the third and fourth metacarpals and a fracture of the os triquetrum of the right hand after compression injury of both forearms with severe soft tissu

Abundant osteoclasts in the subchondral bone of the juvenile Thoroughbred metacarpus suggest an important role in joint maturation.

BACKGROUND: The administration of bisphosphonate medications, which target osteoclastic-bone remodelling, to juvenile and adult racehorses is a matter of debate owing to concerns that these molecules remain bound to the bone-mineralised matrix and may interfere with subsequent bone growth, adaptation to exercise and healing of bone microdamage in equine athletes. Osteoclasts participate in endochondral ossification, subchondral bone remodelling and bone repair. There is a knowledge gap on the role of equine osteoclast biology in the growth and maturation of joint surfaces and this information

Acquired flexural deformity of the metacarpophalangeal joint in five horses associated with tendonous damage in the palmar metacarpus.

Five cases of acquired flexural deformity of the metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) in older horses and ponies were studied. The mean age of affected horses was 14-8 years. Four deformities developed following desmitis of the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon (ALDDFT) and superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) and one following tendonitis of the SDFT alone. All cases were markedly lame and demonstrated variable degrees of flexural deformity. Ultrasonographic examination was performed on all cases which revealed extensive adhesion formation between the ALDDFT and SDFT and red

[Bone healing after oblique osteotomy of the metacarpus in 6-week-old calves after conservative treatment or osteosynthesis].

Bone healing in infants treated by a rigid osteosynthesis of AO type showed mostly a marked periosteal and endosteal callus formation. In adults a callus formation is seldom seen and primary bone healing is mainly based on direct conduction of Havarian channels. Periosteal callus formation is even judged as a sign of instability in adults. We did à 2:1 osteotomy of the right metacarpal bone in 48 calves of 6 weeks of age. The treatment consisted in reposition and a plaster (6) in osteosynthesis with a metal screw of AO type (6) or a biodegradable screw of polylactid (36). The animals were sacr

Magnetic resonance imaging-detected adaptation and pathology in the distal condyles of the third metacarpus, associated with lateral condylar fracture in Thoroughbred racehorses.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING THE STUDY: Lateral condylar (LC) fractures of the third metacarpus (McIII) are a common reason for euthanasia in racehorses, and may be the result of repetitive overloading or cumulative pathological change. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows monitoring of bone and cartilage to detect pathological and adaptive changes that may be precursors of fracture. OBJECTIVES: To describe bone and cartilage MRI features in the distal condyles of McIII of Thoroughbred racehorses, with and without condylar fracture. HYPOTHESES: 1) A greater degree of bone and cartilage adaptati

Magnetic resonance imaging findings of the proximal metacarpus in Quarter Horses used for cutting: Retrospective analysis of 32 horses 2009-2012.

BACKGROUND: Injury to the proximal suspensory ligament is a common cause of lameness in cutting horses. Radiographic and ultrasonographic imaging of lesions responsible for lameness can provide ambiguous results. MRI provides the most comprehensive diagnostic imaging evaluation of lesions specifically affecting cutting horses. OBJECTIVES: To describe the distribution and severity of bone and soft tissue lesions present in the proximal metacarpus of Quarter Horse cutting horses and to assess the impact of these lesions on return to competition. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHOD

[Treatment of subcapital fractures of the 4th and the 5th metacarpus. A clinical trial of the results after treatment without immobilization and reposition and a study of the treatment of these fractures at casualty departments in Denmark].

The aim of the study was to evaluate the results of treating subcapitular fractures of the fourth and fifth metacarpal bones with immediate mobilization and without splinting or reduction. Thirty-six such fractures were prospectively treated in this fashion and evaluated clinically. After four weeks only four patients (11.1%) had restricted movement of the metacarpal-phalangeal joint (less than 0-80 degrees of movement). The fracture was healed in 33 patients (91.7%) and 31 (86.1%) were fully satisfied. In order to investigate the types of treatment given in other accident and emergency depart

Angular limb deformity in a calf treated by periosteotomy and wedge osteotomy.

A carpus valgus deformity was diagnosed in a five-week-old Brown Swiss calf. The 45 degrees deformity was caused by the malaligned healing of a fracture of the left metacarpus after birth trauma. The deviation improved to 25 degrees after being treated with a semicircular lateral periosteotomy above the distal physis of the radius. A complete correction was made by means of a wedge osteotomy five months after the first treatment. A 20 degrees wedge of bone was removed. The metacarpus was stabilised with a seven-hole dynamic compression plate which was removed 12 weeks later. Thirty months late

Surgical correction of metacarpophalangeal valgus deformity in an alpaca.

A 1-month-old alpaca cria presented with a 13 degree valgus deformity of the left metacarpophalangeal joint. The angular limb deformity was centered on the distal metacarpal physes. Transphyseal bridging of the physes was recommended. Two 2.7 mm cortical bone screws were placed either side of the distal metacarpal physes and a figure of eight wire was placed medially around the screw heads. The screws extended through the medial metacarpus into the axial cortex of the lateral metacarpus. Seven weeks after surgery the limb was straight and the screws and wire were removed. Transphyseal bridging
