Instrumented rock-bolt monitoring requires strain records that retain integrity and asset context after local processing and wireless transmission. An Internet of Things (IoT) strain-sensing system with LoRa telemetry and asset metadata was evaluated on a cantilever fixture. The node converted tare-referenced bridge counts to apparent strain, applied temperature compensation using a lagged temperature term, evaluated alarms locally, and buffered summaries for LoRa transfer. Histories were assessed using sequence continuity and a 32-bit cyclic redundancy check (CRC-32). Ten monotonic loading ru

OBJECTIVE: High-quality metadata is essential for scientific discovery, yet sparse annotations in rapidly growing repositories leave many biologically relevant details uncaptured. We evaluated whether large language models (LLMs) can accurately infer ion channel and receptor subtype metadata from source code in a neuroscience repository.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We extracted 5,133 model files from ModelDB. A subset of 1,100 was manually annotated; 253 were held out for testing, and the remainder split into training (80%) and validation (20%) sets. LLM-based approaches (GPT-5.2 and GPT-mini) wer

Clinical trial registries often focus on the human user and do not focus on machine-actionable structures and means to detect and manage provenance, thus hindering large scale reliable reuse and verification. This study presents a FAIRification pipeline for EU Clinical Trials Registry metadata, which preserves provenance and enables the reproduction of results. When the pipeline is run on the trials uploaded between 2022 and 2025, it was able to convert 94.84% of trial metadata into NFDI4Health metadata model. The process demonstrates almost complete population of the target model's mandatory

Computed tomography (CT) images are the most commonly used radiographic imaging modality for detecting and diagnosing lumbar diseases. Despite many outstanding advances, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) of lumbar disc disease remains challenging due to the complexity of pathological abnormalities and poor discrimination between different lesions. Therefore, we propose a Collaborative Multi-Metadata Fusion classification network (CMMF-Net) to address these challenges. The network consists of a feature selection model and a classification model. We propose a novel Multi-scale Feature Fusion (MFF)

HIV molecular epidemiology estimates the transmission patterns from clustering genetically similar viruses. The process involves connecting genetically similar genotyped viral sequences in the network implying epidemiological transmissions. This technique relies on genotype data which is collected only from HIV diagnosed and in-care populations and leaves many persons with HIV (PWH) who have no access to consistent care out of the tracking process. We use machine learning algorithms to learn the non-linear correlation patterns between patient metadata and transmissions between HIV-positive cas

Skin diseases are considered among the most important health problems worldwide, affecting millions of people. Early diagnosis can prevent complications and therefore improve the outcomes for patients. However, accurate diagnosis can be challenging due to the visual similarity of different conditions, variability in symptoms, and the shortage of region-specific annotated datasets for developing robust machine learning models. To bridge the gap, this paper presents a new dataset that aims to further the field of skin disease detection through machine learning and computer vision techniques. The

The estimation of chronological age based on bone mineral density (BMD) metrics for specific anatomical sites is a critical task in forensic anthropology. Although dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans of the distal 1/3 of radius and ulna are widely used in large-scale osteoporosis screenings, forensic studies leveraging such data remain scarce. This study utilized a retrospective dataset (spanning ages 12-96) of 5,134 DXA scans from the distal 1/3 radius and ulna. We analyzed these DXA scans with metadata, including sex, body mass index (BMI), and osteoporosis diagnoses, to train machi

Regression testing is necessary in modern software development with continuous integration and delivery, but running it in full after every change is often too expensive. Test case prioritisation (TCP) can aid this process by prioritising test cases that reveal faults earliest. Still, current TCP approaches focus on single information sources (coverage, change history, and/or past faults) and do not model semantic relationships across software artefacts. Meanwhile, current deep learning-based methods still suffer from cross-project generalisation and misinterpretation. These gaps can be allevi

Phishing is considered one of the most widespread and dynamic cyber threats, as attackers use deceitful URL structures to circumvent traditional detection tools. Despite promising performances of machine learning-based phishing detection techniques, the majority of existing models are evaluated under clean conditions, failing to account for adversarial URL evasion methods including obfuscation, encoding manipulation, homoglyph substitutions, token padding, and subdomain reordering. This weakness grossly compromises their practical performance in real-world deployments. Phishing URL detection i

INTRODUCTION: Accurate and timely identification of microorganisms is critical for guiding clinical decision-making, ensuring biosafety, and supporting microbiological research. Standard morphological assessments often require significant manual effort and specialized expertise, underscoring the need for automated, high-throughput diagnostic tools. This study presents an automated species-level bacterial classification pipeline that couples deep learning analysis of Gram-stained microscopy images with a clinical decision-support framework fueled by a curated microbiological metadata repository

During the COVID-19 pandemic, large-scale pathogen sequencing generated millions of SARS-CoV-2 genomes deposited in repositories like GenBank and GISAID. However, most of these records lack detailed patient metadata, such as demographics and clinical outcomes, which limits their utility for large-scale pathogen genomics analyses. While records that are linked to a journal publication might contain such metadata, systematic extraction and linkage to sequence records requires substantial manual effort. In this work, we assess the completeness of metadata in GenBank and demonstrate the value of e

Despite the maturation of cryogenic electron microscopy (cryoEM) methodologies, generating high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) reconstructions from micrographs is a time-intensive process involving iterative rounds of subjective data curation and hyperparameter optimization. Current approaches to particle classification are often unable to remove all low-quality particles from particle stacks, largely due to the low signal-to-noise ratio, the high dimensionality of particle images, and the multiple degrees of freedom associated with each particle's unknown rotation, orientation, and class

In oculoplastic surgery, real-world databases capture diagnosis and procedure codes but rarely the clinical variables that define surgical meaning: laterality, levator function, margin-reflex distance, inflammatory activity, operative intent, or the reason for revision. We propose that clinical supervision be recorded as documented clinical interpretive annotation: an explicit, written layer that defines the limits of routinely collected data before they are analyzed. "Mentorship as metadata" names the educational relationship that produces this annotation and is used throughout as a labelled

The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Italy's primary institution for geophysics and volcanology, produces vast, heterogeneous geophysical and volcanological datasets. To enhance these assets under Open Science mandates, we implemented the INGV Data Registry: a centralized, curated metadata infrastructure. This metadata-only system is designed to decouple data description from physical storage, providing a scalable solution for distributed data environments. The Registry operates as a dynamic ecosystem that manages hundreds of records, each assigned to a Digital Object Ide

The international Swiss Primary Hypersomnolence and Narcolepsy Cohort Study (iSPHYNCS) is a multicentre study aimed at identifying novel biomarkers for central disorders of hypersomnolence (CDH). We analysed questionnaires and metadata to uncover distinct clusters of participants and explore phenotypic variability within CDH. Data were collected from 227 patients with CDH and 33 healthy controls. Participants completed validated clinical questionnaires and study-specific questions addressing CDH-related symptoms such as excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, cataplexy, disrupted sleep, and sle

Skin cancer is the most common cause of death in humans. Statistics show that competent dermatologists have a diagnostic accuracy rate of less than 80%, while inexperienced dermatologists have a diagnostic accuracy rate of less than 60%. The higher rate of misdiagnosis will cause many patients to miss the most effective treatment window, risking the patients' life safety. However, the majority of the current study of neural network-based skin cancer diagnosis remains at the image level without patient clinical data. A deep convolutional network incorporating clinical patient metadata of skin c

Growing rates of chronic wound occurrence, especially in patients with diabetes, has become a recent concerning trend. Chronic wounds are difficult and costly to treat, and have become a serious burden on health care systems worldwide. Innovative deep learning methods for the detection and monitoring of such wounds have the potential to reduce the impact to patients and clinicians. We present a novel multimodal segmentation method which allows for the introduction of patient metadata into the training workflow whereby the patient data are expressed as Gaussian random fields. Our results indica

Health research increasingly requires effective ways to identify existing datasets and assess their suitability for research. We sought to test whether researchers could use an existing metadata catalogue to assess the suitability of datasets for addressing specified research questions. Five datasets were described in the National Institute for Health Research Health Informatics Collaborative metadata catalogue, and for each dataset five associated research questions were formulated, some of which were answerable with the dataset while others were not. Thirteen researchers each assessed whethe

INTRODUCTION: No widely adopted guidelines exist for collecting and reporting donor-level metadata in tissue-based research, limiting interpretability, reproducibility, and potentially introducing bias. This study aimed to inform ethical and appropriate metadata practices.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 investigators from the Human BioMolecular Atlas Program. Thematic analysis using inductively derived codes identified metadata elements and perspectives on their collection and reporting.
RESULTS: Participants identified 80 metadata variables across six domains: de

BACKGROUND: Institutional research teams and core facilities routinely manage pre-publication omics datasets that span heterogeneous file types, nested project structures, and multiple downstream uses. Public repositories mainly support post-publication dissemination, while workflow systems and enterprise data platforms do not directly provide a lightweight governance and delivery layer for internal research assets.
RESULTS: We present MetaServe, an open-source governance and delivery layer for pre-publication research assets in institutional multi-omics settings. MetaServe registers and deli
