Long-term assessment of PM10 and SO2 in northwestern Türkiye: meteorology, inversions, and transboundary transport.

This study provides a comprehensive long-term assessment of air quality in Balıkesir, northwestern Türkiye, focusing on the spatiotemporal variability of PM10 and SO2 during 2013-2023. The analysis integrates pollutant observations with ERA5 reanalysis meteorological data to examine seasonal and diurnal variations, long-term trends, and the role of temperature inversions and atmospheric circulation in shaping pollution episodes. Results indicate that both pollutants reach their highest concentrations in winter due to intensified domestic heating and stagnant meteorological conditions, with tem

Influence of local and regional Mediterranean meteorology on SO₂ ground-level concentrations in SE Spain.

This work presents the results of a 4-year study on sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) ground-level concentrations in an area of southeastern Spain, the L'Alacantí region, where the cement industry is important and coke use extends to other industries as well. The main source of SO(2) emissions in the area was found to be a the Lepold cement plant (one of the two cement plants in the area). The high levels of SO(2) probably extend back to 1920 when this plant began operations. Both local and Mediterranean-scale meteorological processes influence the SO(2) ground-level concentration and together explain th

Compound fire-meteorology extremes drove megacity air pollution during the 2024 South American fire season.

Extreme air pollution increasingly threatens major cities, yet the relative roles of urban emissions and biomass-burning smoke transported across multiple spatial scales remain difficult to quantify. Here, we investigate three multi-day pollution extremes that affected São Paulo State during the 2024 South American fire season, when daily fine particulate matter (PM2.5) reached 80-100 μg m-3 in the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo. We combined surface observations, aerosol optical thickness measurements, backward trajectories, and controlled global atmospheric simulations differing only in fire-

Meteorology and ethnicity as critical factors in HRIPT: Comparing responses between Chinese and Indian ethnicities.

BACKGROUND: Human repeated insult patch test (HRIPT) is regarded as one of the confirmatory test in determining the safety of skin sensitizers. A number of important factors should be considered when conducting and interpreting the results of the HRIPT. OBJECTIVE: To investigate for probable critical factors that influence the results of HRIPT with the same protocol in Shanghai and Mumbai. METHODS: Two HRIPTs were carried out in Shanghai and Mumbai in 2011. Six identical products and 1% sodium lauryl sulfate were tested. Two Chinese dermatologists performed the grading in the two cities. Cli

Episodes of atrial fibrillation and meteorological conditions.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia encountered in clinical practice. The natural history of AF tends to begin with short paroxysms which gradually evolve into longer episodes, frequently treatment-resistant, and finally take a permanent form. It is a polyaetiological condition and single paroxysms may be caused by a variety of factors. There is a prevailing belief that weather is a vital element affecting the functioning of the human organism. Accordingly, high variability in hospital admissions due to AF paroxysms may be associated with meteorological condition

The changing role of operational meteorology towards a transdisciplinary approach to future weather and climate services.

This paper describes the role of operational meteorology from a single disciplinary standpoint through to multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and, more recently, transdisciplinary approaches and what this means for future forecasting systems. We start from the foundation of a single meteorological discipline: in this case, the forecasting of wind speed and direction that led to the creation of the first gale warning service in the wake of the 'Royal Charter Storm' in 1859. We build on this, giving further examples of where multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary methods have enhanced our unde

PM2.5 and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ambient air: a focus on the effect of meteorology.

PM(2.5) and VOCs (benzene, toluene, m-p-o-xylenes) concentrations were measured in an urban and a suburban site in Athens, Greece, during the period between April and November 2004. This period, which is considered to be the warmer period in Greece, is characterized by the development of sea-breeze over the Attica Basin. Additionally strong Northern, North-eastern winds called "The Etesians", predominate during the summer months (July-August), acting positively to the dispersion of pollutants. In this campaign, 24 days with sea-breeze development were observed, 15 days with northern winds, 6 d

Influence of meteorological factors on development of spontaneous pneumothorax.

This study investigated the correlation between spontaneous pneumothorax (SP) and meteorological factors during different seasons. Patients who visited emergency rooms (ERs) in large cities in Korea and were discharged with SP from 2014 to 2016 were included in this study. Data on temperature, air pressure, and wind speed for each region were collected to obtain each factor's daily maximum, minimum, average, and changes. Days with more than 1 case of SP per million were referred to as pneumothorax days (PD) and those with less than 1 case of SP per million were referred to as non-pneumothorax

Effects of meteorological factors on human leptospirosis in Colombia.

Leptospirosis is a disease usually acquired by humans through water contaminated with the urine of rodents that comes into direct contact with the cutaneous lesions, eyes, or mucous membranes. The disease has an important environmental component associated with climatic conditions and natural disasters, such as floods. We analyzed the relationship between rainfall and temperature and the incidence of leptospirosis in the top 30 municipalities with the highest numbers of cases of the disease in the period of 2007 to 2016. It was an ecological study of the time series of cases of leptospirosis,

Nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) pollution in the Accra metropolis: Spatiotemporal patterns and the role of meteorology.

Economic and urban development in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) may be shifting the dominant air pollution sources in cities from biomass to road traffic. Considered as a marker for traffic-related air pollution in cities, we conducted a city-wide measurement of NOx levels in the Accra Metropolis and examined their spatiotemporal patterns in relation to land use and meteorological factors. Between April 2019 to June 2020, we collected weekly integrated NOx (n = 428) and NO2 (n = 472) samples at 10 fixed (year-long) and 124 rotating (week-long) sites. Data from the same time of year were compared to

Importance of meteorology and chemistry in determining air pollutant levels during COVID-19 lockdown in Indian cities.

Indian cities can experience severe air pollution, and the reduction in activity during the first national COVID-19 lockdown (2020) offered a natural experiment to study the contribution of local sources. The current work aimed to quantify the changes due to the lockdown in NOx, O3 and PM2.5 in two contrasting cities in India (Delhi and Hyderabad) using a boosted regression tree model to account for the influence of meteorology. The median NOx and PM2.5 concentrations were observed to decrease after lockdown in both cities, up to 57% and 75% for PM2.5 and NOx, respectively when compared to pre

The Effects of Meteorological Factors on Dengue Cases in Malaysia.

Dengue is a vector-borne disease affected by meteorological factors and is commonly recorded from ground stations. Data from ground station have limited spatial representation and accuracy, which can be overcome using satellite-based Earth Observation (EO) recordings instead. EO-based meteorological recordings can help to provide a better understanding of the correlations between meteorological variables and dengue cases. This paper aimed to first validate the satellite-based (EO) data of temperature, wind speed, and rainfall using ground station data. Subsequently, we aimed to determine if th

Seasonal and meteorological impacts on primary spontaneous pneumothorax.

BACKGROUND: Although several studies have suggested that primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) might occur in clusters, only a few studies have found seasonal variations in PSP occurrence. Some meteorological parameters might be related to the occurrence of PSP occurrence, however, the effects of weather variations on the onset of PSP are still controversial. METHODS: We examined seasonal differences in the occurrence of PSP and the meteorological risk factors for PSP. All PSP patients aged <40 years who were admitted to Kyushu Central Hospital of the Mutual Aid Association of Public School
