[Methicillin resistant yellow staphylococci].

The incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Norway is extremely low. Isolation of such strains is nearly always associated with import. From December 1993 to January 1997 at the Ullevål University Hospital Department of Medical Microbiology, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 22 persons in Oslo (17 patients and five healthy carriers). A cluster of ten infected persons was detected (five patients and five carriers (nurses)) who were infected with strains showing an unusual antibiotic resistance pattern. All of the cluster strains except for beta-la

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Since the 1960s, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has emerged, disseminated globally and become a leading cause of bacterial infections in both health-care and community settings. However, there is marked geographical variation in MRSA burden owing to several factors, including differences in local infection control practices and pathogen-specific characteristics of the circulating clones. Different MRSA clones have resulted from the independent acquisition of staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec), which contains genes encoding proteins that render the bacterium res

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus versus methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus adult haematogenous septic arthritis.

INTRODUCTION: Septic arthritis is an orthopaedic emergency and Staphylococcus aureus (SA) is the number one cause. Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is increasing in incidence but how it differs from methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) septic arthritis is unclear. Our aim was to delineate the differences in clinical features and outcomes between patients with MRSA and MSSA septic arthritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all adult patients presenting to our institute over a 5 year period from June 2000 to June 2005 with haematogen

In vitro activity of fosfomycin against methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

The in vitro antibacterial activity of fosfomycin was compared to that of oxacillin, cefazolin, ceftriaxone and vancomycin against isolates of Staphylococcus aureus from patients treated at the University of Vienna General Hospital. Of 211 strains, 104 were methicillin-susceptible and 107 were methicillin-resistant. Fosfomycin inhibited over 90% of the strains at concentrations of less than or equal to 64 mg/l, independent of methicillin susceptibility or resistance. The minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBC) were one dilution above the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC). Vancomycin sh

Methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus infections among patients colonized with methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus.

OBJECTIVES: We have noticed that patients colonized with methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) rarely get methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infections. The purpose of this study was to compare the odds of a Staphylococcus aureus (SA) infection being an MRSA infection in MSSA carriers, MRSA carriers and non-carriers of SA. METHODS: Hospitalizations of adult patients at the Cleveland Clinic Health System from 2008 to 2015 were screened to identify those where the patient was tested for SA colonization. The first such hospitalization was identified. Among these 90 891 patient

Longitudinal analysis of methicillin-resistant and methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus carriage in healthy adolescents.

To determine the long-term carriage patterns, strain relatedness, and incidence of subsequent infections among methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) carriers, we screened 154 high school students for nasal carriage of S. aureus on 8 occasions over 11 months. Persistent carriage was defined as a positive culture on ≥7 occasions. Two consecutive isolates from the same subject comprised a pair, and strain relatedness was determined for each pair by molecular typing. Of 1,232 nasal swab cultures obtained on 8 occasions, 323 (26.2%) were pos

Clinical and prognostic differences between methicillin-resistant and methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus infective endocarditis.

BACKGROUND: S. aureus (SA) infective endocarditis (IE) has a very high mortality, attributed to the age and comorbidities of patients, inadequate or delayed antibiotic treatment, and methicillin resistance, among other causes. The main study objective was to analyze epidemiological and clinical differences between IE by methicillin-resistant versus methicillin-susceptible SA (MRSA vs. MSSA) and to examine prognostic factors for SA endocarditis, including methicillin resistance and vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values > 1 μg/mL to MRSA. METHODS: Patients with SA endocarditi

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus emerged long before the introduction of methicillin into clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: The spread of drug-resistant bacterial pathogens poses a major threat to global health. It is widely recognised that the widespread use of antibiotics has generated selective pressures that have driven the emergence of resistant strains. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was first observed in 1960, less than one year after the introduction of this second generation beta-lactam antibiotic into clinical practice. Epidemiological evidence has always suggested that resistance arose around this period, when the mecA gene encoding methicillin resistance carried on an SCC

Reversion From Methicillin Susceptibility to Methicillin Resistance in Staphylococcus aureus During Treatment of Bacteremia.

Approximately 3% of Staphylococcus aureus strains that, according to results of conventional phenotypic methods, are highly susceptible to methicillin-like antibiotics also have polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results positive for mecA. The genetic nature of these mecA-positive methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) strains has not been investigated. We report the first clearly defined case of reversion from methicillin susceptibility to methicillin resistance among mecA-positive MSSA within a patient during antibiotic therapy. We describe the mechanism of reversion for this strain and for a

Comparative severity of pediatric osteomyelitis attributable to methicillin-resistant versus methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus remains the most common etiology of hematogenous osteomyelitis in children. Recently emerged virulent strains of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains now predominate. It remains uncertain whether these pathogens cause a measurably more severe illness than methicillin-sensitive strains. METHODS: We reviewed records of 97 pediatric patients with hematogenous osteomyelitis of varying etiologies to determine whether there were significant differences among the groups in terms of predetermined measures of disease severity. These measures included degree

Ventilator-associated pneumonia by Staphylococcus aureus. Comparison of methicillin-resistant and methicillin-sensitive episodes.

All episodes of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by Staphylococcus aureus were prospectively analyzed for a 30-mo period. Methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) was isolated in 38 episodes and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in 11 others. The two groups were similar regarding sex, severity of underlying diseases, prior surgery, and presence of renal failure, diabetes, cardiopathy, and coma. MRSA-infected persons were more likely to have received steroids before developing infection (relative risk [RR] = 3.45, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.38-8.59), to have been ventilated
