Direct-write maskless lithography of LBL nanocomposite films and its prospects for MEMS technologies.

Application of nanocomposites in MEMS, flexible electronics, and biomedical devices is likely to demonstrate new performance standards and resolve a number of difficult technical problems enabled by the unique combinations of electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. This study explores the possibility of making microscale nanocomposite patterns using the fusion of two highly versatile techniques: direct-write maskless UV patterning and layer-by-layer assembly (LBL). Together they can be applied to the production of a wide variety of nanostructured coatings with complex patterns. Single-

Pilot Study: Magnetic Motion Analysis for Swallowing Detection Using MEMS Cantilever Actuators.

The swallowing process involves complex muscle coordination mechanisms. When alterations in such mechanisms are produced by neurological conditions or diseases, a swallowing disorder known as dysphagia occurs. The instrumental evaluation of dysphagia is currently performed by invasive and experience-dependent techniques. Otherwise, non-invasive magnetic methods have proven to be suitable for various biomedical applications and might also be applicable for an objective swallowing assessment. In this pilot study, we performed a novel approach for deglutition evaluation based on active magnetic m

Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds by Using MEMS Sensors.

We report on the deployment of MEMS static bifurcation (DC) sensors for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs): hydrogen sulfide and formaldehyde. We demonstrate a sensor that can detect as low as a few ppm of hydrogen sulfide. We also demonstrate a sensor array that can selectively detect formaldehyde in the presence of benzene, a closely related interferent. Toward that end, we investigate the sensitivity and selectivity of two detector polymers-polyaniline (PANI) and poly (2,5-dimethyl aniline) (P25DMA)-to both gases. A semiautomatic method is developed to functionalize individu

Sensitivity enhancement of a folded beam MEMS capacitive accelerometer-based microphone for fully implantable hearing application.

The present work attempts to enhance the sensitivity of a folded beam microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) capacitive accelerometer by optimising the device geometry. The accelerometer is intended to serve as a microphone in the fully implantable hearing application which can be surgically implanted in the middle ear bone structure. For the efficient design of the accelerometer as a fully implantable biomedical device, the design parameters such as size, weight and resonant frequency have been considered. The geometrical parameters are varied to obtain the optimum sensitivity considering the

Anticipating, measuring, and minimizing MEMS mirror scan error to improve laser scanning microscopy's speed and accuracy.

We describe a method to speed up microelectromechanical system (MEMS) mirror scanning by > 20x, while also improving scan accuracy. We use Landweber deconvolution to determine an input voltage which would produce a desired output, based on the measured MEMS impulse response. Since the MEMS is weakly nonlinear, the observed behavior deviates from expectations, and we iteratively improve our input to minimize this deviation. This allows customizable MEMS angle vs. time with <1% deviation from the desired scan pattern. We demonstrate our technique by optimizing a point scanning microscope's raste

Strain Plethysmography Using a Hermetically Sealed MEMS Strain Sensor.

We present a hermetically sealed capacitive microelectromechanical system (MEMS) strain sensor designed for arterial pulse waveform extraction using the strain plethysmography (SPG) modality. The MEMS strain sensor features a small form factor of 3.3 mm × 3.3 mm × 1 mm, leverages a nano-gap fabrication process to improve the sensitivity, and uses a differential sensing mechanism to improve the linearity and remove the common mode drift. The MEMS strain sensor is interfaced with an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) to form a compact strain sensing system. This system exhibits a hig

Evidence of an application of a variable MEMS capacitive sensor for detecting shunt occlusions.

A sensor was tested subdural and in vitro, simulating a supine infant with a ventricular-peritoneal shunt and controlled occlusions. The variable MEMS capacitive device is able to detect and forecast blockages, similar to early detection procedures in cancer patients. For example, with gradual occlusion development over a year, the method forecasts a danger over one month ahead of blockage. The method also distinguishes between ventricular and peritoneal occlusions. Because the sensor provides quantitative data on the dynamics of the cerebrospinal fluid, it can help test new therapies and work

Lab-on-chip column for space missions' application: design optimization of fluidic interface and column inlet-outlet to combine test reliability and maximum efficiency.

This work presents MEMS columns developed and integrated onto a fluidic interface especially designed for space application and using two types of fluidic connections in order to minimize extra-column volumes and thereby improving analysis performance. The design and dimensions of the column inlet and outlet are modified to enhance the reliability of the column assembly onto the fluidic interface. The impact of those modifications as well as the internal diameter of capillary junctions on peak broadening and column efficiency is evaluated. Besides, the effect of the square channel shape on pea

Gentamicin drug monitoring for peritonitis patients by using a CMOS-BioMEMS-based microcantilever sensor.

We developed a Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Bio-Microelectromechanical Systems (CMOS-BioMEMS) based piezoresistive microcantilever sensor for detecting gentamicin, a peritonitis therapeutic small-molecule drug. In recent years, the patient-centric concept has been emphasized. In such a trend, therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is especially crucial for patients with peritonitis to avoid adverse reactions from a high concentration of gentamicin in the blood. With the aid of a commercialized semiconductor manufacturing process, the microcantilever sensing platform can serve as a portab

Parylene MEMS patency sensor for assessment of hydrocephalus shunt obstruction.

Neurosurgical ventricular shunts inserted to treat hydrocephalus experience a cumulative failure rate of 80 % over 12 years; obstruction is responsible for most failures with a majority occurring at the proximal catheter. Current diagnosis of shunt malfunction is imprecise and involves neuroimaging studies and shunt tapping, an invasive measurement of intracranial pressure and shunt patency. These patients often present emergently and a delay in care has dire consequences. A microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) patency sensor was developed to enable direct and quantitative tracking of shunt p

A MEMS-based point-of-care platelet counting system.

Thrombocytopenia is a major issue in pediatric patients undergoing therapy for hematological malignancies. A point-of-care test to measure platelet count will help alleviate the burden for these patients and their families by allowing them to test for thrombocytopenia at home instead of through frequent lab tests or by going to the emergency room if there is concern for easy bleeding. We present the development and initial testing of a silicon microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based point-of-care diagnostic sensor to assess blood platelet concentrations. Microfluidic and MEMS-Based Biosensing Platforms for Fungal Respiratory Infections in Immunocompromised Patients: Toward Rapid, Specific, and Minimally Invasive Diagnosis.

Invasive fungal respiratory infections (IFRIs) remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality among immunocompromised patients, yet diagnosis continues to be hindered by nonspecific clinical features, limited sample accessibility, and the poor sensitivity or specificity of conventional tests. Microfluidic and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based biosensing platforms have emerged as promising alternatives, enabling rapid, minimally invasive, and highly specific detection of fungal pathogens and host responses. Microfluidic nucleic acid and antigen assays allow on-chip amplification and

Development of a Test Environment for the Validation of needle mounted Vibroacoustic Sensors.

In this paper, we describe a test environment for the development, performance validation, and optimization of a device to capture vibroacoustic signals during needle-tissue interactions using micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) microphones. Vibroacoustic sensing provides the opportunity to improve in terms of accuracy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) not only by delivering real-time feedback, but also by improving surgeons navigation. In an attempt to explore this methodology, commercially available MEMS microphones were used in direct contact with conven

Enhancing E-Nose Performance via Metal-Oxide Based MEMS Sensor Arrays Optimization and Feature Alignment for Drug Classification.

This article introduces a novel approach to improve electronic nose classification accuracy by optimizing sensor arrays and aligning features. This involves selecting the best sensor combinations and reducing redundant information for better odor recognition. We employ a feature alignment algorithm to address the discrepancies that impede model sharing between electronic nose devices. Our research focuses on overcoming challenges associated with material selection and the constraints of transferring classification models across different electronic nose devices for drug classification. The article presents accelerations occurring in the human body when falling onto a safety net. An attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) consists of sensors on three axes that provide attitude information for objects, including pitch, roll, and yaw. These sensors are made of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) gyroscopes, accelerometers, and magnetometers. Usually, they are used in aircraft flight instruments due to their high precision. In the present article, these sensors were used to test safety nets, protecting people or objects falling from heights. The measurement was made for t

Acoustic Frequency Comb-Based QPSK Demodulation Using Nonlinear MEMS Resonators.

This work demonstrates a microelectrome-chanical system (MEMS)-based phase shift keying (PSK) demodulator that leverages nonlinear resonators. In particular, this work employs an internal-resonating MEMS resonator that generates acoustic frequency combs. The spacing of these combs is dynamically modulated by a primary driving signal and an auxiliary signal that carries the phase-encoded information. The discrete variations in comb spacing serve as the demodulation metric, enabling accurate retrieval of the original phase-encoded data. This approach offers a feedforward demodulation structure,
