Microclimate limits thermal behaviour favourable to disease control in a nocturnal amphibian.

While epizootics increasingly affect wildlife, it remains poorly understood how the environment shapes most host-pathogen systems. Here, we employ a three-step framework to study microclimate influence on ectotherm host thermal behaviour, focusing on amphibian chytridiomycosis in fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra) infected with the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal). Laboratory trials reveal that innate variation in thermal preference, rather than behavioural fever, can inhibit infection and facilitate salamander recovery under humidity-saturated conditions. Yet, a

Tree canopy structure and phenology as drivers of microclimate regulation in Mediterranean urban ecosystems.

Urban trees constitute a fundamental biotic component of urban ecosystems, mediating local climate through shading, evapotranspiration and modification of radiative and aerodynamic processes. While their cooling role is widely acknowledged, the ecological mechanisms governing vertical and seasonal microclimatic regulation within urban tree canopies remain insufficiently quantified, particularly in Mediterranean cities. This study investigates how tree functional traits, canopy structure and phenology interact with urban ecosystem typologies to regulate near-surface air temperature. Continuous

The Impact of Microclimate on Skin Health With Absorbent Incontinence Product Use: An Integrative Review.

This integrative review considers the role of skin occlusion and microclimate in incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD), with a particular focus on disposable, body-worn, absorbent incontinence products. Although the mechanisms are not fully understood, the primary causes of IAD are well-established: occluded skin, in prolonged contact with urine and/or feces and exposed to abrasive forces, is more likely to be affected, and each of these factors can be influenced by wearing absorbent incontinence products. Studies comparing the effect of various absorbent products on skin health have been h

The vulvar skin microenvironment: impact of tight-fitting underwear on microclimate, pH and microflora.

The aim of the present study was to investigate if tight-fitting underwear (string panties) equipped with string panty liners affected the vulvar skin microenvironment differently to regular panties with standard panty liners. Thirty-two healthy women participated in a crossover study where temperature, humidity, surface pH and aerobic microflora were measured on vulvar skin. Vulvar skin temperature was 35.2 +/- 0.19 (mean +/- SEM) and 35.3 +/- 0.17 degrees C, respectively, for the two underwear systems. Mean humidity and mean skin surface pH at vulvar skin did not differ between the two syste

Membrane permeability in the gastrointestinal tract: the interplay between microclimate pH and transporters.

Some examples of pH- and transporter-dependent permeability, determined in side-by-side diffusion cells, are summarized. We investigated the polarized transport in the mucosal-to-serosal direction of monocarboxylic acid-type drugs through the excised rat jejunal tissue and an artificial membrane. We established that, in vitro, these substances are most probably not transported by monocarboxylate transporter 1, but by passive pH-dependent transport. We also studied various influences on the permeability of fluorescein, a low permeability marker, through isolated rat intestinal segments, Caco-2

The vulva skin microclimate: influence of panty liners on temperature, humidity and pH.

Many women use panty liners between menstrual periods. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the use of such products might influence the vulva skin. Twelve healthy women were studied on four occasions with three different product constructions and on one occasion without products. Temperature, surface wetness and surface pH were measured on vulva skin. Mean skin temperature when the women were wearing a conventional panty liner (with a non-breathable back sheet) was 35.9 degrees C, compared to 34.4 degrees C when wearing no panty liner at all (p < 0.01) and 34.5 degrees C when usin

Influence of shoe upper structure on shoe microclimate and human physiological characteristics during running.

BACKGROUND: Shoes upper has been shown to affect the shoe microclimate (temperature and humidity). However, the existing data on the correlation between the microclimate inside footwear and the body's physical factors is still quite limited. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether shoes air permeability would influence foot microclimate and spatial characteristics of lower limb and body. METHODS: Twelve recreational male habitual runners were instructed to finish an 80 min experimental protocol, wearing two running shoes with different air permeability. RESULTS: Participants wearing CLOSED u

Keeping Patients Under the Damage Threshold for Pressure Injury: Addressing Microclimate Through Allostasis.

BACKGROUND: Pressure injuries (PI) are an ongoing problem in health care. Current interventions, both from clinicians and support surface technologies, do not sufficiently address PI prevention. PROBLEM: Patient microclimate is a contributing risk factor for PI, one which can be more adequately addressed. However, the acceptable range for microclimate is unknown, in part because the body adapts to changing conditions. APPROACH: Two key concepts in allostasis are finite resources and responding to intrinsic and extrinsic demands. These concepts have not previously been applied to PI treatment

The microclimate under dressings applied to intact weight-bearing skin: Infrared thermography studies.

BACKGROUND: When a patient is lying in a hospital bed (e.g. supine or prone), bodyweight forces distort soft tissues by compression, tension and shear, and may lead to the onset of pressure ulcers in those who are stationary and insensate, especially at their pelvic region. Altered localized microclimate conditions, particularly elevated skin temperatures leading to perspiration and resulting in skin moisture or wetness, are known to further increase the risk for pressure ulcers, which is already high in immobile patients. METHODS: We have used infrared thermography to measure local skin temp

Scenarios of Engineered Membranes in Cultural Heritage: How Do Membranes Act on Microclimates and Microenvironments?

Conservation is one of the critical issues for cultural heritage assets. A lot of materials are daily proposed to clean, repair, and restore monuments, but best practices are still in high demand to prevent artwork deterioration. Membrane science provides practical and sustainable solutions, including buffer environmental zones, to preserve cultural assets from physical, chemical, and biological agents. Protection can be obtained in an outdoor context in order to counteract the effects of climatic changes, variations of temperature, violent storms, bright lighting, and the wear of time. Remova

Landscape level associations between birds, mosquitoes and microclimates: possible consequences for disease transmission?

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne diseases are on the rise. While climatic factors have been linked to disease occurrences, they do not explain the non-random spatial distribution in disease outbreaks. Landscape-related factors, such as vegetation structure, likely play a crucial but hitherto unquantified role. METHODS: We explored how three critically important factors that are associated with mosquito-borne disease outbreaks: microclimate, mosquito abundance and bird communities, vary at the landscape scale. We compared the co-occurrence of these three factors in two contrasting habitat types (for

Analysis of the Interior Microclimate in Art Nouveau Heritage Buildings for the Protection of Exhibits and Human Health.

Poor air quality inside museums can have a double effect; on the one hand, influencing the integrity of the exhibits and on the other hand, endangering the health of employees and visitors. Both components can be very sensitive to the influence of the internal microclimate, therefore careful monitoring of the physical parameters and pollutants is required in order to maintain them within strict limits and thus to reduce the hazards that can be induced. The current study considers the determination and analysis of 15 indicators of the internal microclimate in an Art Nouveau museum built at the

Relevant microclimate for determining the development rate of malaria mosquitoes and possible implications of climate change.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between mosquito development and temperature is one of the keys to understanding the current and future dynamics and distribution of vector-borne diseases such as malaria. Many process-based models use mean air temperature to estimate larval development times, and hence adult vector densities and/or malaria risk. METHODS: Water temperatures in three different-sized water pools, as well as the adjacent air temperature in lowland and highland sites in western Kenya were monitored. Both air and water temperatures were fed into a widely-applied temperature-dependent d

Intestinal lumen and mucosal microclimate H+ and NH3 concentrations as factors in the etiology of experimental amebiasis.

Axenically cultivated Entamoeba histolytica, trophozoites, strains HM-1:IMSS and HM-38, were suspended in solutions of NaCl, 330 mOsm, of varying pH and ammonium concentrations. Short-term viability was inversely proportional to the ammonia concentration of the medium and was independent of the ammonium concentration and pH. The NH3-induced ameba killing was associated with a cellular alkalosis and cell swelling. While short-term trophozoite viability was unaffected by changes in the medium pH over the range 5.5-8.0, long-term viability was reduced by high pH, and of three pH values tested (6.

Microclimates, land cover, and socioeconomic vulnerability shape Anopheles hotspots in Maryland, USA.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles mosquitoes pose notable public health concerns as competent vectors of malaria and other diseases. Although malaria is no longer endemic in the United States, recent locally acquired cases in states including Maryland highlight the need to better understand Anopheles dynamics in the region. This study aimed to identify geographic hotspots of Anopheles presence in Maryland and evaluate how land cover, microclimatic conditions, and socioeconomic vulnerability shape their spatial and temporal distribution. METHODS: Monthly Anopheles occurrence data (1999-2024) from Global B

The relationship between the microclimate and efflorescence of revealed mural paintings and the later protection strategy.

Throughout history, there were many fine mural paintings concealed within ancient buildings, hidden beneath layers of plaster, wall or other structure. In recent decades, research and practical efforts had primarily focused on nondestructive diagnosis of these hidden murals and the removal of their surface coverings. However, limited attention had been given to the consequences of overlay removal on mural preservation. This study aims to address this gap by examining the revealed mural paintings in the Prince Shi's Palace as a case study, employing an analysis of mural ontology, investigation

The Role of Pathogenesis Associated with the Tumor Microclimate in the Differential Diagnosis of Uterine Myocytic Tumors.

Myocytic tumors of the uterus present vast morphological heterogeneity, which makes differential diagnosis between the different entities necessary. This study aims to enrich the existing data and highlight new potential therapeutic targets regarding aspects related to the pathogenic process and the tumor microenvironment in order to improve the quality of life of women. We performed a 5-year retrospective study, including particular cases of uterine myocyte tumors. Immunohistochemical analyses of pathogenic pathways (p53, RB1, and PTEN) and tumor microclimate using markers (CD8, PD-L1, and CD

Microclimate of Grape Bunch and Sunburn of White Grape Berries: Effect on Wine Quality.

This research aimed to evaluate the composition of wines made with white grapes which are particularly susceptible to sunburn symptoms due to the absence of anthocyanin. Sunburn is a complex physiological dysfunction leading to browning or necrosis of berry tissues. In vintage 2021, the canopy of 'Verdeca' grapevines grown in Salento, South Italy, was differently managed by sun exposing or shading the bunches. Micrometeorological conditions were studied at different levels. Grapes were vinified, comparing the winemaking with and without skin maceration. The vegetative-productive balance of pla

Land cover affects microclimate and temperature suitability for arbovirus transmission in an urban landscape.

The emergence of mosquito-transmitted viruses poses a global threat to human health. Combining mechanistic epidemiological models based on temperature-trait relationships with climatological data is a powerful technique for environmental risk assessment. However, a limitation of this approach is that the local microclimates experienced by mosquitoes can differ substantially from macroclimate measurements, particularly in heterogeneous urban environments. To address this scaling mismatch, we modeled spatial variation in microclimate temperatures and the thermal potential for dengue transmission

Microclimates Might Limit Indirect Spillover of the Bat Borne Zoonotic Hendra Virus.

Infectious diseases are transmitted when susceptible hosts are exposed to pathogen particles that can replicate within them. Among factors that limit transmission, the environment is particularly important for indirectly transmitted parasites. To try and assess a pathogens' ability to be transmitted through the environment and mitigate risk, we need to quantify its decay where transmission occurs in space such as the microclimate harbouring the pathogen. Hendra virus, a Henipavirus from Australian Pteropid bats, spills-over to horses and humans, causing high mortality. While a vaccine is avail
