Auritidibacter ignavus, an Emerging Pathogen Associated with Chronic Ear Infections.

We describe detection of the previously rarely reported gram-positive bacterium Auritidibacter ignavus in 3 cases of chronic ear infections in Germany. In all 3 cases, the patients had refractory otorrhea. Although their additional symptoms varied, all patients had an ear canal stenosis and A. ignavus detected in microbiologic swab specimens. A correct identification of A. ignavus in the clinical microbiology laboratory is hampered by the inability to identify it by using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Also, the bacterium might easily be overlooke

Proteomic analysis reveals Renibacterium salmoninarum grown under iron-limited conditions induces iron uptake mechanisms and overproduction of the 57-kDa protein.

Renibacterium salmoninarum, a slow-growing facultative intracellular pathogen, is the causative agent of bacterial kidney disease, a chronic, progressive and granulomatous infection that threatens farmed and wild salmonids worldwide. Pathogenic R. salmoninarum colonizes tissues and invades the host through cell surface-associated and secreted proteins. While correlations between iron acquisition genes and virulence have been demonstrated in vitro, these mechanisms have not undergone proteomic characterization. The present study applied a proteomic approach to elucidate the differences between

Rothia dentocariosa bacteremia in children: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Rothia dentocariosa, a pleomorphic, fastidious, Gram-positive rod, is a normal inhabitant of the oropharynx. It is a well-known causative agent of dental plaques and periodontal disease. Generally regarded as of low virulence to humans, R. dentocariosa has been increasingly recognized as a pathogen in adults and often associated with infective endocarditis. It should not necessarily be regarded as a contaminant when the isolate comes from areas other than the oropharynx, especially from the blood. We report two cases of R. dentocariosa bacteremia, including an 8-month-old boy with repaired tra

A case of Kocuria varians-induced cervical spondylodiscitis with suspected acupuncture-related infection: review and discussion.

In this article, a case of cervical spondylitis caused by Kocuria varians is reported, which has not been previously documented in clinical literature regarding cervical infections attributed to this bacterium. A review of the patient's medical history revealed prior acupuncture treatment in the cervical and shoulder regions before symptom onset. Despite this, there is no conclusive evidence linking the acupuncture to the infection. The patient ultimately required surgical intervention due to exacerbation of the condition and the manifestation of spinal cord injury symptoms.

Kocuria kristinae - An unusual opportunistic pathogen in head and neck malignancy: Case series from central India's regional cancer care centre.

INTRODUCTION: Kocuria kristinae is a commensal organism, sometimes considered as a lab contaminant, but its repeated isolation from clinical samples in immunocompromised patients should raise red flags. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We confirmed the infection with re-isolation of the organism from the same site before starting treatment. For the identification of Kocuria kristinae we used IDGP cards on VITEK 2 compact system. Antibiotic susceptibility test was done manually following CLSI guidelines 2018 for Coagulase-negative staphylococci. RESULTS: A total of 510 major head neck oncosurgeries wer

Rothia Mucilaginosa Peritonitis Complicating Peritoneal Dialysis.

For the 11% of dialysis patients worldwide who receive peritoneal dialysis (PD) to treat their end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), recent PD-associated peritonitis is estimated to contribute to 5-30% of reported mortality.1,2 These infections are most commonly caused by coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (32%), followed by culture-negative peritonitis (16%), and the timely identification and targeted treatment of peritonitis is critical to avoid complications such as PD catheter removal.3 Here, we present a case of atypical Rothia mucilaginosis peritonitis in a PD patient.

Bacterial contamination of intravitreal needles by the ocular surface microbiome.

PURPOSE: The ocular surface microbiota are recognised as one of causative microorganisms in post-procedural endophthalmitis but in many cases the vitreous tap is culture negative. This study investigated bacterial contamination of intravitreal (IVT) needles using multiple approaches covering culturing, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). METHODS: IVT needles were obtained immediately after injection from patients undergoing treatment for predominantly age-related macular degeneration. Eighteen needles were analysed by cult

B-cell receptor reactivity against Rothia mucilaginosa in nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma.

Nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL) is a Hodgkin lymphoma expressing functional B-cell receptors (BCR). Recently, we described a dual stimulation model of IgD+ lymphocyte-predominant cells by Moraxella catarrhalis antigen RpoC and its superantigen MID/hag, associated with extralong CDR3 and HLA-DRB1*04 or HLADRB1* 07 haplotype. The aim of the present study was to extend the antigen screening to further bacteria and viruses. The fragment antibody-binding (Fab) regions of seven new and 15 previously reported cases were analyzed. The reactivity of non-Moraxella spp.-reactive F

[Rothia mucilaginosa pneumonia in an immunocompromised patient after kidney transplant].

Rothia mucilaginosa is a bacterium derived from the upper respiratory tract microbiota, which is rarely associated with infections in immunocompromised patients suffering chronic lung diseases, mainly pneumonia and bacteremia. Its treatment is generally based on the use of β-lactams. The case study of a kidney transplant patient using immunosuppressive drugs, who developed a disseminated Cryptococcus neoformans infection, is described. After starting antifungal therapy, he presented with fever, appearance of new radiological infiltrates and acute respiratory failure, demonstrating a positive c

[Bilateral bronchopneumonia due to Rothia mucilaginosa].

Rothia mucilaginosa (R. mucilaginosa), formerly named Stomatococcus mucilaginosus, is a facultatively anaerobic, encapsulated gram-positive coccus, which forms part of the normal oropharyngeal and is rarely considered to be a pathogen in immunocompetent patients, although it can produce, on rare occasions, serious infections like bacteremia, endocarditis and respiratory infections; such as pneumonia, pleural empyema or superinfection of bronchiectasis. We present the case of a 74-year-old male diagnosed with right basal pneumonia of torpid evolution with a poor initial response to different an

New Phage-Derived Antibacterial Enzyme PolaR Targeting Rothia spp.

Rothia is an opportunistic pathogen, particularly life-threatening for the immunocompromised. It is associated with pneumonia, endocarditis, peritonitis and many other serious infections, including septicemia. Of note, Rothia mucilaginousa produces metabolites that support and increase overgrowth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, one of the ESKAPE bacteria. Endolysins are considered as antibacterial enzymes derived from bacteriophages that selectively and efficiently kill susceptible bacteria without harming human cells or the normal microbiome. Here, we applied a computational analysis of metagenomi

Efficient degradation of hydroquinone by a metabolically engineered Pseudarthrobacter sulfonivorans strain.

Pseudarthrobacter sulfonivorans strain Ar51 can degrade crude oil and multi-substituted benzene compounds efficiently at low temperatures. However, it cannot degrade hydroquinone, which is a key intermediate in the degradation of several other compounds of environmental importance, such as 4-nitrophenol, g-hexachlorocyclohexane, 4-hydroxyacetophenone and 4-aminophenol. Here we co-expressed the two subunits of hydroquinone dioxygenase from Sphingomonas sp. strain TTNP3 with different promoters in the strain Ar51. The strain with 2 hdnO promoters exhibited the strongest hydroquinone catabolic ac

Assessing the presence and spread of Renibacterium salmoninarum between farmed and wild fish in Sweden.

Bacterial kidney disease (BKD) can be a devastating bacterial infection in salmonids, and it is present in aquaculture throughout the world. BKD is caused by the Gram-positive facultative intracellular bacterium Renibacterium salmoninarum (R. salmoninarum) that is spread both horizontally and vertically. Disease signs include external ulcerations and blisters and internal signs such as organ swelling, granulomas, petechiae and ascites. In Sweden, BKD accounts for a significant income loss in aquacultures due to expensive decontamination of the facility and increased disease susceptibility for

Identification of bacteria in the tracheal swabs of farmed ostriches and their effect on the viability of influenza A virus.

Avian influenza surveillance is a requirement for commercial trade in ostrich products, but influenza A viruses (IAVs) have proven difficult to isolate from ostrich tracheal swabs that test positive using molecular methods. We hypothesized that microbes unique to the ostrich trachea propagate in the transport medium after sampling and affect viral viability. We cultured tracheal swabs from 50 ostriches on 4 farms in South Africa, and recovered and identified 13 bacterial, 1 yeast, and 2 fungal species. Dietzia sp. had not been identified previously in the oropharyngeal tract of a bird, to our

The influence of dihydroquercetin on the cell membrane model of Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus.

Dihydroquercetin (DHQ) exhibited antimicrobial activity associated with its interaction with bacterial cell membranes. However, molecular-level mechanism has not been revealed. Therefore, this study investigated the potential interactions between DHQ and model membrane by constructing a Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus (Cms) membrane model. The optimization of preparation condition was sonicated 45 °C for 20 min determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS). The average particle size of the liposomes showed an average particle size of 162.43 ± 2.41 nm, with zeta potential of -26.77

First report of Kocuria marina spontaneous peritonitis in a child.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a rare affection in the pediatric population. It usually occurs when concurrent conditions are present, such as nephrotic syndrome, peritoneal dialysis or liver disease. We report a case of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis due to Kocuria marina in a 2-year-old child with no underlying risk factor. This is both the first description of an infection caused by this rare pathogen in a child and the first reported case of primary peritonitis caused by K. marina in a patient with no predisposing condition. CASE PRESENTATION: A 2 year-old boy p
