Can microplastics be visualised with MRI?

PURPOSE: Nanoplastics and microplastics (NMPs) are increasingly detected in human tissues. Currently, NMP tissue concentrations can only be detected using post-mortem, destructive techniques, severely limiting research into possible effects on the human body. Whether NMPs are MR-visible, and what implications NMPs have for medical imaging, remains unknown. METHOD: The impact of NMPs on MR imaging was investigated by utilising a phantom containing several concentrations of NMPs, suspended in agar solution, as well as a phantom containing 3D-printed plastic (PETG) plastic flakes, similarly susp

Microplastics: A Modifiable Cardiac Risk Factor.

Globally, cardiovascular disease is the most prevalent cause of death, and there are other risk factors involved that are not captured through traditional means. We present a review of the literature on microplastic exposure and discuss the clinical implications of microplastics for cardiovascular disease. Experimental studies show that micro- and nanoplastics induce oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, thrombosis, dyslipidemia, and direct cardiotoxicity. These microplastics and nanoplastics have been identified in coronary plaque. Emerging clinic

Preparing and characterizing environmentally aged microplastics.

Microplastics (MPs) are persistent and widely distributed pollutants that have become an emerging environmental problem. When present in the environment, they are increasingly being incorporated into the carbon cycle and thus participate in the Earth's biochemical cycle alongside other pollutants. However, upon entering the environment (as primary or secondary MPs), various environmental factors collectively influence the physical and chemical characteristics of MPs, leading to changes in surface morphology, particle size and microstructure. These alterations can change their physical behavior

Uncovering microplastics contamination in canned seafood.

There is limited research on the occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in canned seafood. All types of canned seafood investigated in the present study were contaminated. After sample digestion in 30 % hydrogen peroxide, a total of 40 MPs were recovered. Fibers were the most common type, blue was the dominant colour, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) identified polyester as the most common polymer. Considering all samples, an average of 3.5 ± 5.2 MPs/can was obtained, with octopus in tomato sauce and tuna in olive oil presenting the highest contamination (5.2 ± 7.5 MPs/can and 5.2

Microplastics detected in cirrhotic liver tissue.

BACKGROUND: The contamination of ecosystem compartments by microplastics (MPs) is an ubiquitous problem. MPs have been observed in mice tissues, and recently in human blood, stool and placenta. However, two aspects remain unclear: whether MPs accumulate in peripheral organs, specifically in the liver, and if liver cirrhosis favours this process. We aimed to examine human liver tissue samples to determine whether MPs accumulate in the liver. METHODS: This proof-of-concept case series, conducted in Germany, Europe, analyzed tissue samples of 6 patients with liver cirrhosis and 5 individuals wit

Microplastics in take-out food containers.

Microplastics have been detected in various media including water, sediment, and seafood, whereas there are few studies focusing on microplastics in take-out containers. In this study, we collected take-out containers made of common polymer materials (polypropylene, PP; polystyrene, PS; polyethylene, PE; polyethylene terephthalate, PET) from five cities in China. Microplastics in the containers were analyzed after different treatments (direct flushing and flushing after immersing with hot water). Our results showed that microplastics were found in all take-out containers and abundance ranged f

Environmental impacts of polylactic acid microplastics on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems: More threatening compared to traditional microplastics?

The widespread use of plastics has caused significant environmental challenges, particularly the accumulation of microplastics (MPs, <5 mm) in ecosystems. While polylactic acid (PLA)-based biodegradable plastics represent a technologically advanced substitute for conventional polymers, field studies reveal that their environmental degradation frequently yields PLA MPs, creating novel ecological exposure pathways that differ from those of petroleum-based MPs. This review systematically evaluates the environmental impacts of PLA MPs, focusing on their effects on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem

Monitoring microplastics in drinking water: An interlaboratory study to inform effective methods for quantifying and characterizing microplastics.

California Senate Bill 1422 requires the development of State-approved standardized methods for quantifying and characterizing microplastics in drinking water. Accordingly, we led an interlaboratory microplastic method evaluation study, with 22 participating laboratories from six countries, to evaluate the performance of widely used methods: sample extraction via filtering/sieving, optical microscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Three spiked samples of simulated clean water and a laboratory blank were sent to each laboratory with a prescribed standard operating procedure for par

Investigations into the flocculent settling of microplastics.

Sewage treatment plants (STPs) act as both significant sinks and sources of microplastics (MPs) in the environment. However, there is a lack of investigations into the flocculent settling characteristics of MPs and their removal trends in secondary clarifiers. Therefore, this study attempted to explore the flocculent settling behaviour of small-sized (15-105 μm) MPs of polymer types: nylon, polystyrene, polypropylene, and low-density polyethylene through controlled lab-scale experiments. Results showed that the MPs' removal with flocculent settling improved from 55 to over 80% as sludge mixed

Effects of microplastics and nanoplastics on the kidneys.

Plastics are hydrophobic carbon polymers with a half-life of ∼500 years. The widespread production and environmental accumulation of plastics pose significant toxicity concerns. Humans are routinely exposed to micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), which can enter rate the bloodstream and reach various organs, including the kidneys. Here, we review research on nephrotoxic effects of plastics and the underlying mechanisms. The results of several studies of kidneys in mammals and kidney cells from humans suggest that MNPs induce renal toxicity. Although the underlying mechanisms remain to be characteriz

Detection of microplastics in the human penis.

The proliferation of microplastics (MPs) represents a burgeoning environmental and health crisis. Measuring less than 5 mm in diameter, MPs have infiltrated atmospheric, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems, penetrating commonplace consumables like seafood, sea salt, and bottled beverages. Their size and surface area render them susceptible to chemical interactions with physiological fluids and tissues, raising bioaccumulation and toxicity concerns. Human exposure to MPs occurs through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact. To date, there is no direct evidence identifying MPs in penile t

Fusion of microplastics into the mussel byssus.

Microplastics have been found to adhere to the surface of specific tissues or organs other than being ingested by the organisms. To further test the hypothesis that microplastics might get into specific body parts of organisms, mussel byssus was chosen as a target subject in the present study. In the field investigation, microplastics were found in mussel byssus, and the abundance of microplastics was 0.85-1.02 items/individual mussel and 3.69-9.16 items/g byssus, but the location of microplastics in byssus was not easily determined. Therefore, we simulated environmental conditions in the labo

Miscounting microplastics as a result of matrix molecules: optimizing identification and quantification of microplastics in natural freshwater systems.

Microplastics have become a major focus of research in environmental chemistry; over the past decade, microplastic sampling has shifted from marine and large lake settings to areas such as wastewater treatment plants, inland lakes, and rivers, which present various environmental sampling challenges due to more enriched and complex sample matrices. This study highlights the various methods that are used in microplastic sample processing, tests a new methodological approach to address the matrices found in a series of inland lakes in Minnesota, United States, and investigates the FTIR spectra an

How much are microplastics harmful to the health of amphibians? A study with pristine polyethylene microplastics and Physalaemus cuvieri.

Microplastics (MPs) are critical emerging pollutants found in the environment worldwide; however, its toxicity in aquatic in amphibians, is poorly known. Thus, the aim of the present study is to assess the toxicological potential of polyethylene microplastics (PE MPs) in Physalaemus cuvieri tadpoles. According to the results, tadpoles' exposure to MP PE at concentration 60 mg/L for 7 days led to mutagenic effects, which were evidenced by the increased number of abnormalities observed in nuclear erythrocytes. The small size of erythrocytes and their nuclei area, perimeter, width, length, and ra

Microplastic footprints in freshwater ecosystems: Raman spectroscopy of microplastics as indicator of anthropopressure in Northeastern Poland's lakes.

To understand the effect of anthropopressure on microplastic contamination, a comprehensive analysis of Raman spectroscopic measurements conducted on microplastic fibers collected from the freshwater lakes located in Northeastern Poland was performed. Six of the lakes are under protection. Results indicate a diverse array of fiber types with dominant synthetic polymers: polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), as well as numerous organic materials, including cellulose-based fibers (rayon). We found a positive relationship between the amount of microplastic fibers in surface wat

Transport and Accumulation of Microplastics from Biosolids to Australian Agricultural Soils: Detection of Microplastics Down to 1 μm.

The shift toward sustainable agriculture involves replacing inorganic fertilizers with organic alternatives like biosolids. However, concerns arise over emerging contaminants, such as microplastics (MPs), which remain largely unregulated. Despite their common use in Australia, the transfer of MPs from biosolids to agricultural soils remains largely unknown. Herein, we have investigated the abundance, characteristics, and transport of MPs resulting from biosolids application in two Queensland agricultural sites. MP concentrations were significantly higher in biosolid-amended soils (average of 1

Microplastics (MPs) increasingly threaten environmental and human health due to their widespread presence in aquatic, terrestrial, and atmospheric systems. Yet scalable, cost-effective removal technologies remain limited for MPs despite rising concern. This study investigated the use of wood sawdust, both unmodified (UMSD) and chemically modified (MSD) with tannic acid and ferric chloride (FeCl3), as removal technologies for polyethylene (PE) MP remediation in aquatic systems. MSD was synthesized via a simple aqueous-phase reaction, enhancing its surface functionality and increasing its negati
