Occurrence of intestinal microsporidia in immunodeficient patients in Poland.

Microsporidial infections may be asymptomatic in immunocompetent hosts, but can be severe and disseminated in HIV/AIDS patients, children, the elderly, or in immunocompromised individuals, including those with primary or medically-induced immunodeficiencies. 209 faecal samples were collected from 80 clinical patients, with or without abdominal symptoms, and tested for the presence of the parasites. Microsporidia were found in 10 of the 80 patients (12.5%) using trichrom staining of faecal smears and/or PCR. Encephalitozoon intestinalis and 1 unidentified species were identified in 2 of the 32

[Role of cryptosporidia and microsporidia in diarrhea in immunocompromised patients].

Cryptosporidium and Microsporidian play an important part in the diarrhoeic pathology of the immunocompromised patients. The study of 35 cases of cryptosporidiosis and 4 cases of intestinal microsporidiosis diagnosed in the parasitology laboratory of Rabta hospital of Tunis shows that cryptosporidiosis prevalence is 17.24% for AIDS patients, 3.45% for immunocompromised patients VIH (-), and microsporidiosis prevalence is 5.7% for patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Common points for these two parasitosis are: Clinical syndromes dominated by an acute diarrhea A diagnosis based on

Marine microsporidia: Hidden diversity, aquatic emergence and zoonotic risks.

Marine Microsporidia represent an increasingly important but historically underestimated group of aquatic intracellular parasites. Although traditionally associated with invertebrates and fishes, recent molecular and environmental studies have revealed extensive hidden diversity across marine ecosystems together with unexpected phylogenetic links between aquatic and human-associated lineages. This review synthesizes five decades of research (1975-2025) concerning the biology, evolution, taxonomy, host-pathogen interactions, ecological diversity, and zoonotic significance of marine Microsporidi

Energy metabolism and its evolution in Microsporidia and allied taxa.

The reduction and specialization of the energy metabolism system is a common trait in the evolution of intracellular parasites. One group of fungi-related parasites, the Microsporidia, seems to have developed this trait far more than other eukaryotes. As an extreme adaptation for a parasitic lifestyle, some of them have completely lost the ability to synthesize ATP, relying heavily upon the metabolic processes of host cells to ensure their own development and reproduction. For a long time, only fragmentary data on the functioning and evolution of the energy metabolism system in microsporidia w

Pneumocystis jirovecii and microsporidia: An unusual coinfection in HIV patients?

Pneumocystis jirovecii and microsporidia species are recognized as opportunistic infectious pathogens in AIDS patients. Coinfection of both in one patient has been rarely reported. The aim of the present study was to investigate the coinfection of P. jirovecii and microsporidia in different tissues from AIDS deceased patients. Post mortem histological finding of P. jirovecii and microsporidia was demonstrated by means of the Grocott's methenamine silver and Brown Brenn staining, respectively. Molecular technique was used for identification and characterization of both fungi. Out of the 514 aut

Polymerase chain reaction for diagnosis and species differentiation of microsporidia.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques have been developed for the detection of microsporidian DNA in different biological samples. We used sequence data of the rRNA gene for the identification of Enterocytozoon bieneusi, Encephalitozoon intestinalis, E. cuniculi, and E. hellem in different biological samples of HIV-infected patients by PCR, Southern blot hybridization, restriction endonuclease digestion analysis, cloning, and comparative genetic sequencing. One primer pair was used for amplification of the entire small subunit (SSU)-rRNA gene of E. bieneusi, E. intestinalis, and E. hellem

Eradication of cryptosporidia and microsporidia following successful antiretroviral therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Incidence of opportunistic protozoal infections causing diarrheal illnesses in patients with HIV has decreased since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). The objective of this study was to determine whether the parasites, cryptosporidia, and microsporidia were effectively eradicated or only suppressed following treatment. DESIGN: Six HIV-positive patients with diarrheal symptoms caused by cryptosporidia or microsporidia were prospectively followed up with stool samples and duodenal biopsies. Samples were taken before HAART, between 1 to 3 months, and 6

Molecular Prevalence of Microsporidia Infection in Patients with Lung Cancer.

Infections are still among the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with lung cancer, which has the highest rate of cancer-related deaths in the world. Microsporidia, which are opportunistic parasitic fungi, primarily localize to the intestine by ingestion but can disseminate to the respiratory tract or can be acquired by spore inhalation. Cancer patients are at higher risk for microsporidia, a life-threatening infection, than the normal population is. We aimed to characterize the prevalence of microsporidia infection for the first time by evaluating the intestinal and

Methionine aminopeptidases: Potential therapeutic target for microsporidia and other microbes.

Methionine aminopeptidases (MetAPs) have emerged as a target for medicinal chemists in the quest for novel therapeutic agents for treating cancer, obesity, and other disorders. Methionine aminopeptidase is a metalloenzyme with two structurally distinct forms in humans, MetAP-1 and MetAP-2. The MetAP2 inhibitor fumagillin, which was used as an amebicide in the 1950s, has been used for the successful treatment of microsporidiosis in humans; however, it is no longer commercially available. Despite significant efforts and investments by many pharmaceutical companies, no new MetAP inhibitors have b

Screening of the Pandemic Response Box identifies anti-microsporidia compounds.

Microsporidia are fungal obligate intracellular pathogens, which infect most animals and cause microsporidiosis. Despite the serious threat that microsporidia pose to humans and agricultural animals, few drugs are available for the treatment and control of microsporidia. To identify novel inhibitors, we took advantage of the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans infected with its natural microsporidian Nematocida parisii. We used this system to screen the Pandemic Response Box, a collection of 400 diverse compounds with known antimicrobial activity. After testing these compounds in a 96-well f

Understanding intestinal spore-forming protozoa: cryptosporidia, microsporidia, isospora, and cyclospora.

OBJECTIVES: To summarize recent information about the "new" gastrointestinal protozoal pathogens (cryptosporidia, microsporidia, isospora, and cyclospora) and to help practicing clinicians integrate this information into their clinical databases by emphasizing the similarities among these organisms. DATA SOURCES: Relevant English-language articles published between 1988 and 1995 were identified through a MEDLINE search done using the names of the intestinal spore-forming protozoa. Articles cited in the bibliographies of these and other articles were searched manually. STUDY SELECTION: Studie

Microsporidia infection in patients with the human immunodeficiency virus and unexplained cholangitis.

BACKGROUND: Cholangitis in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is usually associated with opportunistic infections by cryptosporidium species or cytomegalovirus, but in about a third of cases no opportunistic agent is identified. We suspected some of these cases of biliary disease might be explained by infection with the microsporidia species Enterocytozoon bieneusi, an obligate intracellular protozoan that causes chronic diarrhea in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). METHODS: We studied eight HIV-infected homosexual men (in either group IV
