MRI enhancement and microvascular density in gliomas. Correlation with tumor cell proliferation.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Angiogenesis and proliferation activity are important indicators of tumor behavior in human gliomas. The authors studied how tumor enhancement in MR imaging and intratumoral vascular density were correlated with cell proliferation in cerebral gliomas. METHODS: The authors studied retrospectively 62 cerebral gliomas. Patients were examined before surgery with contrast-enhanced MR imaging. Microvessel density and the cell proliferation rate of tumor specimens were measured immunohistochemically using factor VIII and MIB-1 antibodies. Contrast enhancement of the tumors

Evaluation of VEGF A expression and microvascular density as prognostic factors in extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: Angiogenesis is essential for tumor growth and metastasis. An association between microvessel density, a measure of tumor angiogenesis, and conventional prognostic variables has been shown for many different tumor entities. In extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, the VEGF expression and microvessel density have rarely been investigated. METHODS: Paraffin-embedded specimens from 51 resected adenocarcinomas of the extrahepatic bile duct were immunostained for vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF A) and CD 34 to evaluate the microvessel density (MVD). VEGF A staining was evaluated

Microvascular density in predicting survival of patients with choroidal and ciliary body melanoma.

PURPOSE: Although malignant uveal melanoma disseminates predominantly hematogenously because of the absence of intraocular lymphatics, consensus about prognostic impact of microvascular density (MVD) has not been reached. This study was undertaken to investigate whether MVD, microvascular patterns, or both determine prognosis of uveal melanoma. METHODS: A population-based retrospective cohort study of melanoma-specific and all-cause mortality of 167 consecutive patients who had an eye enucleated because of choroidal or ciliary body melanoma from 1972 through 1981 was conducted. MVD was determ

Low-density lipoprotein promotes microvascular thrombosis by enhancing von Willebrand factor self-association.

von Willebrand factor (VWF) mediates primary hemostasis and thrombosis in response to hydrodynamic forces. We previously showed that high shear promoted self-association of VWF into hyperadhesive strands, which can be attenuated by high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and apolipoprotein A-I. In this study, we show that low-density lipoprotein (LDL) binds VWF under shear and enhances self-association. Vortexing VWF in tubes resulted in its loss from the solution and deposition onto tube surfaces, which was prevented by HDL. At a stabilizing HDL concentration of 1.2 mg/mL, increasing concentrations of

The relationship between triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and coronary microvascular disease.

BACKGROUND: As a novel marker of insulin resistance, the ratio of triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) has been recently reported to be related to the occurrence of coronary artery diseases. However, no research has been conducted to probe whether the TG/HDL-C ratio is associated with the occurrence of coronary microvascular disease (CMVD). AIM: This study investigates the association between the TG/HDL-C ratio and the occurrence of CMVD. METHODS: This study included 175 patients diagnosed with CMVD in the Department of Cardiology of our hospital from October 2017 to

Pathological Changes in Microvascular Morphology, Density, Size and Responses Following Comorbid Cerebral Injury.

Aberrations in brain microcirculation and the associated increase in blood-brain-barrier (BBB) permeability in addition to neuroinflammation and Aβ deposition observed in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and ischemia have gained considerable attention recently. However, the role of microvascular homeostasis as a pathogenic substrate to disturbed microperfusion as well as an overlapping etiologic mechanism between AD and ischemia has not been thoroughly explored. In this study, we employ temporal histopathology of cerebral vasculature in a rat model of β-amyloid (Aβ) toxicity and endothelin-1 induced-i

Correlation of vascular endothelial growth factor and CD105-microvascular density in primary pterygium.

The relationship between the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and microvascular density (MVD) marked by CD105 (CD105-MVD), and that between CD105-MVD and the clinicopathological characteristics of primary pterygium were investigated. The streptavidin-biotin complex (SABC) immunohistochemical staining in paraffin-embedded tissues was used to detect the expression of VEGF in 23 cases of primary pterygia and 7 normal conjunctival specimens. The antibody against CD105 was used to display vascular endothelial cells, and MVD was examined by counting the CD105-positive vascular

Apoptosis and reduced microvascular density of the lamina propria during tooth eruption in rats.

During tooth eruption, structural and functional changes must occur in the lamina propria to establish the eruptive pathway. In this study, we evaluate the structural changes that occur during lamina propria degradation and focus these efforts on apoptosis and microvascular density. Fragments of maxilla containing the first molars from 9-, 11-, 13- and 16-day-old rats were fixed, decalcified and embedded in paraffin. The immunohistochemical detection of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), caspase-3 and MAC387 (macrophage marker), and the TUNEL method were applied to the histological mol

Relationship of microvascular density on histological and immunohistochemical features in endometrioid adenocarcinomas of the uterus: experimental study.

UNLABELLED: The most common malignant tumors of the uterus are endometrioid adenocarcinomas (EA). Their prognosis depends on the qualitative characteristics of the neoplastic cells and their stroma. The neovascularization of EA tissues and level of microvascular density (MVD) influence tumor progression. Our study aims to establish the relationship between MVD in EA tissue and the histological and immunohistochemical features of tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors studied 30 cases of endometrial ЕА and compared their histological and immunohistochemical characteristics with the MVD of
