Development of an Anthropomorphic Phantom of the Axillary Region for Microwave Imaging Assessment.

We produced an anatomically and dielectrically realistic phantom of the axillary region to enable the experimental assessment of Axillary Lymph Node (ALN) imaging using microwave imaging technology. We segmented a thoracic Computed Tomography (CT) scan and created a computer-aided designed file containing the anatomical configuration of the axillary region. The phantom comprises five 3D-printed parts representing the main tissues of interest of the axillary region for the purpose of microwave imaging: fat, muscle, bone, ALNs, and lung. The phantom allows the experimental assessment of multiple

Polarized Microwave-Induced Thermoacoustic Imaging for Detection of Dilated Cardiomyopathy In Vivo.

OBJECTIVE: Altered myocardial fiber arrangement is a hallmark feature in the early stages of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). However, current medical imaging modalities have limitations in resolving microstructural changes within the myocardium. In this study, we introduce a high-spatiotemporal-resolution polarized microwave-induced thermoacoustic imaging (P-MTAI) technique for in vivo detection of myocardial fiber rearrangement in DCM. METHODS: Leveraging the anisotropic arrangement and orientation of myocardial fibers, the technique analyzes thermoacoustic signals generated by stimulating the

Microwave-assisted synthesis of new triangulenium dyes for lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM).

We introduce a novel microwave-assisted method for the rapid and efficient synthesis of triangulenium dyes, enabling the creation of a broader range of these fluorophores, which are characterized by very long fluorescence lifetimes. We prepared different azadioxatriangulenium (ADOTA) and diazaoxatriangulenium (DAOTA) derivatives and thoroughly characterized their photophysical properties. We investigated their solvatochromic properties and the effects of the solvent, aided by computational chemistry results. The new ADOTA and DAOTA dyes were applied in multiple in cellulo microscopy modalities

A Simple Differential Microwave Imaging Approach for In-Line Inspection of Food Products.

Microwave imaging has been recently proposed as alternative technology for in-line inspection of packaged products in the food industry, thanks to its non-invasiveness and the low-cost of the equipment. In this framework, simple and effective detection/imaging strategies, able to reveal the presence of foreign bodies that may have contaminated the product during the packaging stage, are needed to allow real-time and reliable detection, thus avoiding delays along the production line and limiting occurrence of false detections (either negative or positive). In this work, a novel detection/imagin

Percutaneous stereotactic image-guided microwave ablation for malignant liver lesions.

Thermal ablation has proven beneficial for hepatocellular carcinoma and possibly for colorectal liver metastases, but data is lacking for other liver metastases. Computer-assisted navigation can increase ablation efficacy and broaden its indications. We present our experience with percutaneous stereotactic image-guided microwave ablation (SMWA) for non-colorectal liver metastases (NCRLM), in form of a retrospective study including all SMWA for NCRLM from 2015 to 2017. Indication for SMWA was determined at a multidisciplinary tumorboard. End-points include recurrence, overall and liver-specific

Nuclear Imaging to Detect Diaphragmatic Perforation as a Rare Complication of Microwave Ablation.

Acquired diaphragmatic perforation leading to massive hepatic hydrothorax and respiratory failure is a rare complication of microwave ablation (MWA) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Imaging modalities to detect pleuroperitoneal communication remain poorly described. We report a nuclear imaging technique used to efficiently diagnose and locate diaphragmatic defects. A 57-year-old male with cirrhosis and HCC presented with respiratory distress after undergoing MWA of a HCC lesion. He was admitted to the intensive care unit for noninvasive positive pressure ventilator support. Chest radiography

Microwave accelerated synthesis of PET image contrast agents for AD research.

Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) offers the potential to provide early onset diagnosis and subsequent intervention, including guided treatment regimens. One of the restricting factors in clinical application of PET technology is the limited availability of radioligands with affinity to specific targets of interest. Given the short half-life of the most popular positron emitter currently used ((18)F; approximately 120 min.) extremely rapid and efficient radiochemistry methods are needed to ensure required compounds are prepared and purified for administrati

Microwave Near Field Imaging of Externally Injected Signals in an Encapsulated Electronic Device.

Addressing the challenges of electromagnetic compatibility testing and non-destructive inspection of internal structures in miniaturized electronic devices. This paper reports a non-destructive testing method based on wide-field imaging using diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, and systematically demonstrates its application on a black-epoxy-encapsulated Universal Serial Bus (USB) flash drive. In the experiment, a swept microwave signal from 2.82 GHz to 2.97 GHz was sequentially injected into the four external interface pins of the USB drive. A bulk diamond served as the quantum sensing lay

Medical Microwave Imaging Using Physics-Guided Deep Learning-Part 1: The Forward Solver.

Well-designed and trained deep neural networks can solve inverse electromagnetic problems much faster than conventional solvers. However, they need a physics framework to ensure producing physically correct results. Since most physics-guided deep learning inverse solvers require substantial training with numerous epochs, each involving solving a forward problem, their accuracy and efficiency are largely defined by the utilized forward solver, which becomes a bottleneck for their practical training. Thus, a fast and accurate self-supervised deep learning forward solver is presented. The solver

Medical Microwave Imaging Using Physics-Guided Deep Learning-Part 2: The Inverse Solver.

Deep learning has the potential to address the bottleneck of conventional medical microwave tomography, which is ill-posed and has a high computation cost. However, current physics-guided deep learning methods may fail to capture the imaged object's salient regions, resulting in misdiagnosis. A deep neural network inspired by the distorted Born iterative method (DBIM) is proposed to address this challenge. This method, which avoids using Green's function, provides a theoretical explanation of why current deep learning methods guided by iterative physics algorithms fail in detecting abnormal ti

A Systematic Pipeline for Evaluating Factors Affecting Radar-Based Microwave Breast Imaging Quality.

Microwave imaging (MWI) has emerged as a promising non-ionizing, cost-effective technique for breast cancer detection. However, the influence of key system design choices remains poorly characterized. This study aims to systematically investigate how antenna array geometry, tumor characteristics, and tissue dielectric properties influence radar-based image reconstruction using a robust computational pipeline. A total of 575 different scenarios were simulated and analyzed, combining 25 distinct breast models with varying tumor configurations and 23 antenna configurations (including 20 randomly

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Robot Microwave Imaging Based on Multi-Path Scattering Model.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) robot microwave imaging systems have attracted comprehensive attention. Compared with visible light and infrared imaging systems, microwave imaging is not susceptible to weather. Active microwave imaging systems have been realized in UAV robots. However, the scattering signals of geographical objects from satellite transmitting systems received by UAV robots to process imaging is studied rarely, which reduces the need of load weight for the UAV robot. In this paper, a multi-path scattering model of vegetation on the earth surface is proposed, and then the microwav

Rapid Stroke Classification and Prognosis Monitoring with High-Spatiotemporal Resolution Microwave-Induced Thermoacoustic Imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Rapid differentiation of hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes and dynamic monitoring of stroke evolution are essential for timely intervention and prognosis assessment. However, current imaging approaches face challenges in achieving both rapid stroke differentiation and dynamic monitoring. This study aims to develop a high-spatiotemporal-resolution microwave induced thermoacoustic imaging (HR-MTAI) technique for rapid stroke differentiation and monitoring of stroke evolution. METHODS: We developed an HR-MTAI system with a B-mode imaging frame rate of 100 Hz and a lateral resolution of

Evaluating the Performance of Algorithms in Axillary Microwave Imaging towards Improved Breast Cancer Staging.

Breast cancer is the most common and the fifth deadliest cancer worldwide. In more advanced stages of cancer, cancer cells metastasize through lymphatic and blood vessels. Currently there is no satisfactory neoadjuvant (i.e., preoperative) diagnosis to assess whether cancer has spread to neighboring Axillary Lymph Nodes (ALN). This paper addresses the use of radar Microwave Imaging (MWI) to detect and determine whether ALNs have been metastasized, presenting an analysis of the performance of different artifact removal and beamformer algorithms in distinct anatomical scenarios. We assess distin

Using prior information to enhance microwave tomography images in bone health assessment.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is the major cause of bone weakness and fragility in more than 10 million people in the United States. This disease causes bone fractures in the hip or spine, which result in increasing the risk of disabilities or even death. The current gold standard in osteoporosis diagnostics, X-ray, although reliable, it uses ionizing radiations that makes it unfeasible for early and continuous monitoring applications. Recently, microwave tomography (MWT) has been emerging as a biomedical imaging modality that utilizes non-ionizing electromagnetic signals to screen bones' electrica

Sensitivity and Specificity Estimation Using Patient-Specific Microwave Imaging in Diverse Experimental Breast Phantoms.

Many new clinical investigations of microwave breast imaging have been published in recent years. Trials with over one hundred participants have indicated the potential of microwave imaging to detect breast cancer, with particularly encouraging sensitivity results reported from women with dense breasts. The next phase of clinical trials will involve larger and more diverse populations, including women with no breast abnormalities or benign breast diseases. These trials will need to address clinical efficacy in terms of sensitivity and specificity. A number of challenges exist when using microw
