Postural Instability in Patients With Injury of Corticoreticular Pathway Following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVE: We attempted to investigate postural instability in patients with injury of the corticoreticular pathway (CRP) after mild traumatic brain injury. METHODS: The CRP was reconstructed, and the fractional anisotropy value, apparent diffusion coefficient value, and fiber volume of the CRP were measured. For evaluation of postural instability, both the Balance Error Scoring System score and the displacement of center of pressure were measured. RESULT: Significantly lower tract volume of the CRP was observed in the patient group than in the control group with no significant difference in

Descending projections from the superior colliculus in rat: a study using orthograde transport of wheatgerm-agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase.

Despite extensive behavioural work on the rat superior colliculus, its descending efferent pathways have not been fully characterised with modern anatomical tract-tracing techniques. To investigate these pathways, wheatgerm-agglutinin conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (1%) was injected at various locations within the superior colliculus of hooded rats. Label judged to be transported orthogradely was plotted on coronal sections modified from the atlas of Paxinos and Watson (1982). Two major descending pathways were identified. Cytoarchitectonic subdivisions in the subtectal midbrain of the lizard Gallotia galloti.

Contemporary study of molecular patterning in the vertebrate midbrain is handicapped by the lack of a complete topological map of the diverse neuronal complexes differentiated in this domain. The relatively less deformed reptilian midbrain was chosen for resolving this fundamental issue in a way that can be extrapolated to other tetrapods. The organization of midbrain centers was mapped topologically in terms of longitudinal columns and cellular strata on transverse, Nissl-stained sections in the lizard Gallotia galloti. Four columns extend along the whole length of the midbrain. In dorsoventr

[Comparative characteristics of the functioning of brain structures exposed to morphine and D-phenylalanine].

In experiments on rats it was shown that morphine and D-phenylalanine in doses of 5 and 100 mg/kg, respectively, produce a similar by the degree increase of pain reaction thresholds at stimulation of paws through the electrified floor of the chamber. Experiments on rabbits demonstrated that the main factor in morphine action is a decrease of excitability and blood filling of the reticular formation of the midbrain and the central gray matter and an increase of excitability of the dorsal hippocamp without significant changes in the frontal cortex excitability. D-phenylalanine also caused a decr

[Pressure waves induced by electrical stimulation of upper pons and lower midbrain in dogs with experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage].

Neurogenic mechanisms of pressure waves were investigated by means of electrical stimulation of the upper pons and the lower midbrain of 32 dogs in which subarachnoid hemorrhage had experimentally been made. The dogs were slightly anesthetized, immobilized and artificially respired. After subarachnoid infusion of red blood cells, continuous recordings of systemic blood pressure (SBP), intracranial pressure (ICP) and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) were made simultaneously. At the stage of increased ICP, pressure waves were induced by electrical stimulation of the upper pons and the lower mid

Decreased release of D-aspartate in the guinea pig spinal cord after lesions of the red nucleus.

This study attempts to determine if fibers that project from the guinea pig red nucleus to the spinal cord use L-glutamate and/or L-aspartate as transmitters. Unilateral injections of kainic acid were placed stereotaxically in the red nucleus to destroy the cells of origin of the rubrospinal tract. Six days after the injection, Nissl-stained sections through the lesion site showed that the majority of neurons in the red nucleus ipsilateral to the kainic acid injection were destroyed. In addition, the lesioned area included parts of the surrounding midbrain reticular formation. Silver-impregnat

Afferent projections related to attack sites in the pontine tegmentum.

Attack by a cat on a rat was elicited by electrical stimulation of the ventral parabrachial nucleus or the paralemniscal pontine reticular formation. The attack was quiet and it differed from similar behavior elicited at other sites in that the cat not only bit the rat but struck it with its paw. Horseradish peroxidase was deposited at the attack sites. Cells sending projections to the attack sites were located in gyrus proreus, anterior, central, and medial amygdala, the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, lateral, dorsal and perifornical hypothalamus, as well as the central gray matter, sup

Functional brain stem circuits for control of nose motion.

Rodents shift their nose from side to side when they actively explore and lateralize odors in the space. This motor action is driven by a pair of muscles, the deflector nasi. We studied the premotor control of this motion. We used replication-competent rabies virus to transsynaptically label inputs to the deflector nasi muscle and find putative premotor labeling throughout the parvocellular, intermediate, and gigantocellular reticular formations, as well as the trigeminal nuclei, pontine reticular formation, midbrain reticular formation, red nucleus, and superior colliculus. [The effect of vibration on the electrocorticographic shifts during the switching off of specific and nonspecific afferent systems of the brain].

Electrocorticograms of vibration induced effects were studied in intact and labyrinthectomized rabbits under midbrain reticular formation and renoreactive structures blockade. There was involvement of the specific (vestibular) and non-specific brain structures in the mechanisms underlying the cortex' electric activity. The article contains a review of the vibration-related shifts in the cortex, both specific and nonspecific--and in other afferent modalities (proprioceptive, somatic, visceral).

Mesencephalic neuronal populations: new insights on the ventral differentiation programs.

The midbrain is a complex structure where different functions are located. This formation is mainly involved in the visual and auditory information process (tectum) and visual movements and motor coordination (tegmentum). Here we display a complete description of midbrain anatomy based on the prosomeric model and of the developmental events that take place to generate this structure. We also summarize the new data about the differentiation and specification of the basal populations of the midbrain. The neural tube suffers the influence of several secondary organizers. These signaling centers c

Use of rsfMRI-fALFF for the detection of changes in brain activity in patients with normal-tension glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: We know little about the changes of brain activity in patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). PURPOSE: To investigate the altered spontaneous brain activity in patients with NTG through the resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging-fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (rsfMRI-fALFF) technique, and to explore the relationship with optical coherence tomography (OCT) and field of vision. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty patients with NTG and 20 healthy controls (HCs) (matched for sex, age, and level of education) were enrolled. Spontaneous cerebral activity v

Differential effect of antiepileptic and non-antiepileptic drugs on the reticular formation.

The effect of the antiepileptic drugs carbamazepine and phenytoin, and of the non-antiepileptic drug baclofen, was compared on various inhibitory and excitatory mechanisms in the feline trigeminal nucleus. Baclofen resembled carbamazepine and phenytoin in depressing segmental excitatory and facilitating segmental inhibitory mechanisms. However, baclofen facilitated the periventricular and periaqueductal inhibition of the trigeminal nucleus, while carbamazepine and phenytoin depressed these descending inhibitory mechanisms. Baclofen also resembles carbamazepine and phenytoin in its effectivenes

Brainstem afferents to the rostral (juxtafacial) nucleus paragigantocellularis: integration of exteroceptive and interoceptive sensory inputs in the ventral tegmentum.

The rostral pole of the nucleus paragigantocellularis (PGi), termed juxtafacial PGi, lies medially adjacent to the facial nucleus and lateral to the pyramidal tract and the nucleus gigantocellularis pars alpha in the caudal ventral pons. This narrow region of the ventral pontine reticular formation is an afferent to the nucleus locus coeruleus, and contains neurons which have been implicated in pain processing, cardiovascular regulation, respiratory control and arousal. Here, we studied brainstem afferents to the juxtafacial PGi using retrograde transport of wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated ho

[Electroencephalographic analysis of the central action of halonal].

The experiments on rabbits revealed the depressant effect of anticonvulsant drug halonal on spontaneous bioelectrical activity and electroexcitability of the motor area of the cerebral cortex, caudate nucleus, intralaminar nuclei of the thalamus and midbrain reticular formation. The drug exerts no effect on the amygdala and hippocamp. The mechanism of the anticonvulsant effect of halonal involves inhibition of the caudo-thalamo-cortical synchronizing system that presumably disorders the occurrence of the hypersynchronous charge in the cortical neurons and prevents the development of a convulsi

Delayed-onset continuous bruxism with olivary hypertrophy after top of the basilar syndrome.

Delayed-onset continuous bruxism due to brain stem infarction has not yet been reported. A 49-year old man presented with quadriplegia and ophthalmoplegia. Brain MRI showed acute infarction in the bilateral midbrain, right thalamus and the superior cerebellum. One month later, the patient developed bruxism which persisted during sleep. A palatal myoclonus was not observed. Follow up MRI taken 4 months later showed bilateral olivary hypertrophy. We suggest that the patient's bruxism may be related to the olivary hypertrophy. The bruxism generator may be located in the pontine-reticular-formatio

Clinical approach to brainstem lesions.

The brainstem consists of the midbrain, pons, and medulla. The cerebellum is attached to the dorsal surface of the pons and upper medulla. The brainstem contains 9 of the 12 cranial nerves and is crossed by ascending, descending, and cerebellar pathways and their nuclei as well as the reticular formation. Numerous and rare crossed brainstem syndromes have been described in recent years, many of them without clinical significance. The aim of this article is to provide a brief clinical description of some conditions affecting the brainstem.

[Electroencephalographic analysis of the central action of benzonal].

Chronic experiments on conscious rabbits demonstrated that benzonal suppresses the spontaneous bioelectrical activity of the motor division of the cortex of large hemispheres while failing to affect the spontaneous biorhythms of the nonspecific nuclei of the thalamus, caudate nucleus, dorsal hippocamp and the basolateral nuclei of the tonsil. The drug decreased the electroexcitability of the motor cortex and caudate nucleus, exerted a mild depressant action on the reticular formation of the midbrain, tonsil, and hippocamp and had no effect on the excitability of nonspecific nuclei of the thala

Mapping the human corticoreticular pathway with multimodal delineation of the gigantocellular reticular nucleus and high-resolution diffusion tractography.

The corticoreticular pathway (CRP) is a major motor tract that transmits cortical input to the reticular formation motor nuclei and may be an important mediator of motor recovery after central nervous system damage. However, its cortical origins, trajectory and laterality are incompletely understood in humans. This study aimed to map the human CRP and generate an average CRP template in standard MRI space. Following recently established guidelines, we manually delineated the primary reticular formation motor nucleus (gigantocellular reticular nucleus [GRN]) using several group-mean MRI contras

Teaching Video NeuroImage: Isolated Undulating Tongue Hyperkinesia Following a Basilar Stroke.

An 82-year-old man with a history of hypertension and coronary revascularization presented with sudden-onset right hemiparesis and disorientation lasting 5 hours. On admission, he was intubated because of gasping and a Glasgow Coma Scale of 3. Hemorrhagic stroke was suspected, but ruled out by the initial head CT, which revealed old cerebellar lacunae. The following day, the comatose, now unsedated patient exhibited tetraparesis; fixed, nonreactive pupils; and corneal reflex, but no oculocephalic reflex. Rhythmic undulating tongue movements without palatal or limb involvement were first observ

The content was studied of biogenic amines and their metabolites (by the method of high-effective fluid chromatography electrochemical detection) in the reticular formation of the midbrain, locus coeruleus and sensorimotor cortex in the rats of Wistar and August lines, differing in the behaviour in the open field, in conditions of immobilization stress. The dependence was revealed of the biogenic amines level on the animals genotype and individual characteristics. Most probably, the level of biogenic amines metabolism in central brain structures determines the stability of the animals against
