Evaluation of conjunctival bacterial flora in a herd of goats in the Midwestern United States.

OBJECTIVE: To identify conjunctival bacterial flora in healthy adult and newborn kid goats in the Midwestern United States and to compare vaginal and ocular surface flora in dam-kid pairs. ANIMALS STUDIED: Thirty mixed-breed (crosses between Boer, Kiko, and Syfan Spanish) goats, 20 adult does and 10 newborn kids. PROCEDURES: One eye of 15 adult goats (n = 15 eyes) and 5 kids (n = 5 eyes) was randomly selected. A subset of 5 adults (n = 10 eyes) and 5 kids (n = 10 eyes) underwent bilateral sampling. Each recently kidded dam's vaginal canal (n = 10) was also sampled. Two swabs were collected f

COVID-19-Associated Pulmonary Aspergillosis at an Academic Medical Center in the Midwestern United States.

Pulmonary aspergillosis has been reported at high rates in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. We retrospectively assessed all patients admitted to an intensive care unit during the early COVID-19 surge (3/17/20-5/10/20) at our medical center in the midwestern USA for the presence of COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA). Patients were not routinely screened for CAPA; diagnostic work-up for fungal infections was pursued when clinically indicated. Among 256 patients admitted to the ICU with severe COVID-19, 188 (73%

Condition of calves on arrival at dairy-beef calf-raising farms in the Midwestern United States.

In the United States, nonreplacement calves born on dairies are often sold in the first days of life and experience multiple transport events that increase their risk of disease as they enter the dairy-beef sector. The objectives of this cross-sectional cohort study were to evaluate the condition of dairy-beef calves on arrival at calf-raising farms in the Midwestern United States and to identify factors associated with poor health outcomes. From February 2024 to January 2025, 1,436 calves (∼3-7 d of age) were enrolled 6.4 ± 7.2 h after arrival at 20 dairy-beef calf-raising farms (n = 72 calve

DIVERSITY, HOST RANGE, AND SPECIFICITY OF ECHINOSTOMES (FAMILY ECHINOSTOMATIDAE; LOOSS, 1899) IN THE MIDWESTERN UNITED STATES.

Trematodes in the family Echinostomatidae (Looss, 1899) are globally distributed parasites of both humans and wildlife. In North America, echinostomes are nearly ubiquitous in freshwater systems, where they commonly parasitize snails as their first intermediate hosts, aquatic hosts such as snails or tadpoles as second intermediate hosts, and waterfowl and semi-aquatic mammals as their definitive hosts. Our study expands on sampling efforts in the midwestern United States and contributes novel ND1, ITS2, and 28S sequences from 12 lineages of echinostomes in the genera Echinostoma, Echinoparyphi

Detection and characterization of an H4N6 avian-lineage influenza A virus in pigs in the Midwestern United States.

H4Nx viruses were reported in swine in Canada and China, but had not been recognized in swine in the USA. In late 2015, an avian-origin H4N6 influenza A virus was isolated from pigs in the United States during a routine diagnostic investigation of clinical respiratory disease in the herd. Serological analysis from additional pigs at the farm and other pigs within the swine production system indicated that the virus did not efficiently transmit from pig-to-pig and the mode of transmission to swine could not be determined. The isolate was characterized at the molecular level and the pathogenesis

Contextual influences on Latino men's sexual and substance use behaviors following immigration to the Midwestern United States.

Objectives: Latinos in the United States experience a disproportionate number of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and higher use of alcohol and illegal drugs, which has been attributed to increases in risk behaviors following immigration. Whereas substantial research documents these behavioral changes, little is known about how immigrants increase their risk or why some immigrants increase their risk and other immigrants do not. This study explored how the social and normative context affects sexual and substance use behaviors among Latino immigrant men in a midsized Midwes

Emissions and air quality impacts of truck-to-rail freight modal shifts in the Midwestern United States.

We present an examination of the potential emissions and air quality benefits of shifting freight from truck to rail in the upper Midwestern United States. Using a novel, freight-specific emissions inventory (the Wisconsin Inventory of Freight Emissions, WIFE) and a three-dimensional Eulerian photochemical transport model (the Community Multiscale Air Quality Model, CMAQ), we quantify how specific freight mode choices impact ambient air pollution concentrations. Using WIFE, we developed two modal shift scenarios: one focusing on intraregional freight movements within the Midwest and a second o

Doe diligence: A regional analysis of antlerless deer harvest regulations in the Midwestern United States of America.

Wildlife management in the United States of America (US) is primarily delegated to the individual states wherein state wildlife agencies manage wildlife populations to achieve multiple and sometimes conflicting objectives. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are an important species in the Midwestern US whose populations are primarily managed through recreational hunting. Managers aim to adjust populations by altering the harvest of antlerless (usually female) animals by changing the number of harvest permits available, hunting season lengths, or applying incentive programs like earn-a-

Context matters: Contrasting behavioral and residential risk factors for Lyme disease between high-incidence states in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States.

The dynamics of zoonotic vector-borne diseases are determined by a complex set of parameters including human behavior that may vary with socio-ecological contexts. Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. The Northeast and upper Midwest are the regions most affected - two areas with differing levels of urbanization and differing sociocultural settings. The probability of being infected with Lyme disease is related to the risk of encounters with Ixodes scapularis ticks infected with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, which reflects both the environmental tick haz

Perinatal health effects of herbicides exposures in the United States: the Heartland Study, a Midwestern birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The objective of the Heartland Study is to address major knowledge gaps concerning the health effects of herbicides on maternal and infant health. To achieve this goal, a two-phased, prospective longitudinal cohort study is being conducted. Phase 1 is designed to evaluate associations between biomarkers of herbicide concentration and pregnancy/childbirth outcomes. Phase 2 is designed to evaluate potential associations between herbicide biomarkers and early childhood neurological development. METHODS: People (target enrollment of 2,000) who are seeking prenatal care, are ages 18 or

Heterogeneous distribution of avian malaria parasites across mosquito species: disproportionate involvement of Culex restuans in the Midwestern United States.

BACKGROUND: Avian malaria parasites and related haemosporidians are diverse and widespread vector-borne parasites that circulate within complex host-vector networks. Despite their ecological importance, their diversity and circulation within mosquito communities remain poorly understood in temperate North America. The Midwestern United States, located along major North American migratory flyways, supports diverse avian habitats and mosquito assemblages, providing an ideal setting to investigate these interactions. Here, we characterized the occurrence, phylogenetic diversity, and mosquito-line

Assessing the Contribution of Songbirds to the Movement of Ticks and Borrelia burgdorferi in the Midwestern United States During Fall Migration.

The geographic distributions of Ixodes scapularis (black-legged tick) and the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi (the causative agent of Lyme disease) are expanding in the USA. To assess the role of migratory songbirds in the spread of this tick and pathogen, we captured passerines in central Illinois during the fall of 2012. We compared forested sites in regions where I. scapularis populations were either previously or not yet established. Ticks were removed from birds and blood samples were taken from select avian species. Ticks were identified by morphology and molecular techniques were used to
