Previously deployed mothers report higher levels of posttraumatic stress and depression symptoms than non-deployed mothers. However, the specific stressors encountered during deployment that account for elevated clinical symptoms are not well understood including the impact of Military Sexual Trauma (MST) in the context of other deployment-related stressors. This study examined whether MST during deployment, degree of combat exposure, and length of deployment will each be associated with posttraumatic stress and depression symptoms among previously deployed mothers. Participants included 113 m

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether blast exposure alone and blast-associated concussion result in similar neurologic and mental health symptoms.
METHODS: A 14-item questionnaire was administered to male US Marines on their return from deployment in Iraq and/or Afghanistan.
RESULTS: A total of 2,612 Marines (median age 22 years) completed the survey. Of those, 2,320 (88.9%) reported exposure to ≥1 blast during their current and/or prior deployments. In addition, 1,022 (39.1%) reported ≥1 concussion during the current deployment, and 731 (28.0%) had experienced at least 1 prior lifetime concussion.

Health care providers need to be aware that stress complaints that result from deployment can emerge even after many years. This has important implications for health care policies. The main aim of this study is to investigate the relation between the development of posttraumatic stress and other mental health complaints and the burden on (mental) health care after a deployment. For this study we used data from a large prospective cohort study on stress-factors related to deployment in 1007 Dutch soldiers, who were deployed to Afghanistan. Participants were assessed at six follow up times up u

BACKGROUND: More than 40% of children in military families are <6 years old, a period when children are most dependent on their parents' physical and emotional availability.
PURPOSE: This systematic review describes the impact of deployment since 9/11 on the mental health of military families with young children, evaluates evidence-based interventions for military parents with young children, and identifies gaps in the science limiting our ability to support the needs of these families.
METHODS: Databases were reviewed from 2001 to 2014 using preferred reporting items for systematic reviews

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of spousal deployment during the antenatal period on maternal and neonatal outcomes and to estimate whether group prenatal care may be beneficial in reducing adverse outcomes when spouses are deployed.
METHODS: Primigravid women who delivered at Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, were prospectively enrolled and selected for participation on a random basis between January 2013 and January 2014. Women whose spouses were deployed to a combat zone during the entire pregnancy (deployed group) were compared with women whose spouses were no

This article highlights the potential negative effect of the current combat environment on bone health of young military men and women who may be at risk for stress fractures and future bone disease because of alterations primarily in diet and physical activity level during deployment. A combination of physiologic biomarkers, including bone turnover and bone mineral density, and nutrition and exercise surveys can provide meaningful data on potential health risks related to deployment. Soldiers participating in an investigation into bone health before and after deployment did not have decreased

BACKGROUND: Expeditionary military facilities care for deployed military personnel. They deploy with limited equipment and personnel to austere environments. Female military personnel are deployed forward in a support capacity. Under these conditions, ectopic pregnancy continues to be a potential catastrophe leading to maternal death.
CASES: We report three cases of ectopic pregnancy in forward-deployed personnel. The random occurrence and different clinical presentations emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and management.
CONCLUSION: During austere remote deployments, early diagnosi

BACKGROUND: Most military mental health research focuses on the impact of deployment-related stress; less is known about how everyday work-related factors affect wellbeing.
AIMS: This systematic narrative literature review aimed to identify non-deployment-related factors contributing to the wellbeing of military personnel.
METHOD: Electronic literature databases were searched and the findings of relevant studies were used to explore non-deployment-related risk and resilience factors.
RESULTS: Fifty publications met the inclusion criteria. Determinants of non-deployment stress were identifie

The purpose of this work was to evaluate the clinical performance of a number of types of field (i.e., portable) dental equipment used under actual military deployment conditions. This equipment is often used under demanding field conditions where temperature, humidity, and air quality are not controlled. This article presents the results of a project conducted by the Naval Institute for Dental and Biomedical Research and the Air Force Dental Evaluation and Consultation Service to evaluate commercially available field dental equipment through laboratory testing and clinical user evaluations at

OBJECTIVE: Persistent respiratory symptoms following post-9/11 military deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan are well-recognized, but the spectrum of respiratory diseases remains poorly characterized. This study describes deployment-related respiratory diseases and the diagnostic utility of resting and exercise pulmonary function testing.
METHODS: Between 2009 and 2017, 127 consecutive military workers ("deployers") with new-onset respiratory symptoms underwent clinical evaluation. Deployment-related respiratory diseases were classified as proximal and/or distal. Using descriptive statistics an

Nearly 40 000 service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have suffered traumatic injuries, with over 300 000 at risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other psychiatric problems. These veterans face numerous post-deployment health concerns, sharing substantial burdens with their families. Although many rely upon community-based health care, little is known about how these individuals present at family medicine clinics for perceived medical and psychological issues. We surveyed 347 patients during visits at six clinics, and respondents reported whether they,a family member o

Symptoms of vaginitis and urinary tract infections are miserable, distracting, and significantly affect women's quality of life. Among civilian women, these symptoms account for 10.5 million office visits per year. To examine the scope of the problem for military women during deployment situations, surveys were sent to randomly selected Army and Navy units. Of 841 women who completed the anonymous survey and had been deployed, vaginal infections were experienced by 30.1% and urinary tract infections by 18.4% of them during deployment. Vaginal symptoms were consistent with symptoms associated w

BACKGROUND: Problematic anger, characterized by excessive frequency, intensity, and duration of anger which causes substantial emotional distress and functional interference, poses a marked challenge in military populations. Despite its importance, research on this topic is limited. This study contributes to the literature by exploring problematic anger in a large sample of Norwegian military personnel who served in NATO missions in Afghanistan.
METHODS: All Norwegian military personnel who deployed to Afghanistan between 2001 and 2020 were sent a link to a cross-sectional web-based survey by

Current paradigms regarding the effects of traumatic exposures on military personnel do not consider physical symptoms unrelated to injury or illness as independent outcomes of trauma exposure, characteristically dealing with these symptoms as comorbidities of psychological disorders. Our objective was to ascertain the proportions of deployed military personnel who experienced predominantly physical symptoms, predominantly psychological symptoms, and comorbidity of the two and to examine the association between traumatic deployment exposures (TDEs) and these symptomatic profiles. Data were tak

BACKGROUND: Significant concern exists regarding the respiratory health of military personnel deployed to Southwest Asia, given their exposures to numerous environmental hazards. Although the deployed military force is generally assumed to be fit, the pre-deployment respiratory health of these individuals is largely unknown.
METHODS: Soldiers deploying to Southwest Asia were recruited from the pre-deployment processing center at Fort Hood, Texas. Participants completed a general and respiratory health questionnaire and performed baseline spirometry.
RESULTS: One thousand six hundred ninety-t
