Biochemical properties of peptides encrypted in bovine milk proteins.

Milk proteins are precursors of many different biologically active peptides. These peptides are inactive within the protein sequence, requiring enzymatic proteolysis for release of the bioactive fragment from the proteins precursor. It is evident that activated peptides originating from milk proteins should be taken into account as potential modulators of various regulatory processes in the body. Activated peptides are potential modulators of various regulatory processes in the living system: immuno-modulatory peptides stimulate the activities of cells of the immune system and several cytomodu

Delayed reaction to cow's milk proteins: a case study.

Allergy to cow's milk proteins has been defined as any adverse reaction mediated by immunological mechanisms to one or several of these proteins. The diagnosis can be made based on clinical manifestations supported by immune activation of in vitro parameters. Reactions to cow's milk have been classified according on their onset as immediate (< 45 min) or delayed-type (from 2 h to days). We describe a patient with late respiratory manifestations after milk intake, probably due to more than one immunological mechanism. He was an 18-year-old male who since infancy had presented serous rhinorrea,

Biochemical properties of regulatory peptides derived from milk proteins.

Biologically active peptides derived from milk proteins are inactive within the sequence of the precursor proteins but can be released by enzymatic proteolysis. Based on structure-activity studies, peptides with a defined bioactivity show common structural features. Moreover, many milk protein-derived peptides reveal multifunctional bioactivities. Bioactive peptide fragments originating from milk proteins should be taken into account as potential modulators of various regulatory processes in the body. Opioid peptides are opioid receptor ligands with agonistic or antagonistic activities. Angiot

Unusual presentation of adverse reactions to cow's milk proteins.

Allergy to cow's milk most commonly give symptoms from the gastrointestinal tract, the skin or the respiratory tract. Here two patients are described, with symptoms not so common. One with cerebral symptoms and the other with enuresis. Infantile colic occurs more or less in about 20% of all infants. We have found that in about 1/3 of breastfed infants with infantile colic the symptoms disappeared when the mothers had a cow's milk free diet. We have also managed to analyse the content of the cow's milk protein beta-lactoglobulin in the human milk.

Disorder in milk proteins: adipophilin and TIP47, important constituents of the milk fat globule membrane.

Milk fat globules (MFGs), which are secreted by the epithelial cells of the lactating mammary glands, account for the most of the nutritional value of milk. They are enveloped by the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM), a complex structure consisting of three phospholipid membrane monolayers and containing various lipids. Depending on the origin of milk, specific proteins accounts for 5-70% of the MFGM mass. Proteome of MFGMs includes hundreds of proteins, with nine major components being adipophilin, butyrophilin, cluster of differentiation 36, fatty acid binding protein, lactadherin, mucin 1, m

Circulating antibodies to cow's milk proteins in ulcerative colitis.

Sera from patients with ulcerative colitis (51), Crohn's disease (30), hypolactasia (13), untreated adult coeliac disease (11), irritable colon syndrome (24), and sera from 38 healthy control subjects were tested for antibodies to the principal cow's milk proteins-casein, alpha-lactalbumin, and beta-lactoglobulin. The red-cell-linked antigen-antiglobulin reaction was used to determine the titres of direct agglutinating antibodies and IgA and IgG incomplete antibodies. Apart from patients with coeliac disease, direct agglutinating antibodies were found infrequently and then in low titres. Appro

Cow's Milk Protein Allergy.

Cow's milk allergy refers to an immunological reaction to milk protein. It is one of the commonest food protein allergies with an estimated prevalence of 0.5% to 3% at 1 y of life. The disease may be IgE or non-IgE mediated or mixed with a wide range of symptoms often involving multiple organ systems. Gastrointestinal manifestations are common in non-IgE disease and may consist of enteropathy, proctocolitis, colic, reflux-like symptoms, constipation, enterocolitis syndrome and eosinophilic esophagitis. The gold standard for diagnosis remains a double-blind placebo-controlled oral challenge. Sp

Composition and Variation of Macronutrients, Immune Proteins, and Human Milk Oligosaccharides in Human Milk From Nonprofit and Commercial Milk Banks.

BACKGROUND: When human milk is unavailable, banked milk is recommended for feeding premature infants. Milk banks use processes to eliminate pathogens; however, variability among methods exists. Research aim: The aim of this study was to compare the macronutrient (protein, carbohydrate, fat, energy), immune-protective protein, and human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) content of human milk from three independent milk banks that use pasteurization (Holder vs. vat techniques) or retort sterilization. METHODS: Randomly acquired human milk samples from three different milk banks ( n = 3 from each bank)

[Cow's milk protein allergy].

Cow's milk protein allergy affects gastrointestinal morphology and function. The clinical symptoms depend on the localisation in the gut and on the type of the allergic reaction. In some patients cutaneous, respiratory and even urinary symptoms may also be present. As the condition is almost limited to the first year of life, transitory elimination of cow's milk from the diet is the treatment of choice. A number of patients with intractable diarrhoea suffers from undiagnosed cow's milk protein allergy.

Effect of quantitative trait loci for milk protein percentage on milk protein yield and milk yield in Israeli Holstein dairy cattle.

Although numerous quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping studies involving milk protein percent (PP), milk yield (MY), and protein yield (PY) have been carried out, there has not been any systematic evaluation of the effects of individual QTL on these 3 interrelated traits. Consequently, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects on MY and PY of QTL for PP previously mapped in various laboratories. The study, based on selective DNA pooling of milk samples, included 10 Israeli Holstein artificial insemination bulls, each the sire of 1,800 or more milk-recorded daughters. For eac

Binding of drugs in milk: the role of casein in milk protein binding.

Unbound fractions of 14C-labeled diazepam and tenoxicam in skimmed milk of various species (man, horse, goat, cow, sheep, dog, rabbit) with different milk compositions were determined. Furthermore, the protein binding of five 14C-labeled benzodiazepines differing in their lipophilicity (bromazepam, clonazepam, diazepam, flumazenil, and flunitrazepam) were measured in human milk and in artificially prepared solutions of individual milk proteins (lactoferrin, 2.4 g/liter; alpha-lactalbumin, 2.1 g/liter; albumin, 0.4 g/liter; and casein--2.1, 3.4, and 13.3 g/liter). Allergic reactions to cow's milk proteins in medications in childhood.

INTRODUCTION: Cow's milk is a frequent trigger of allergic reactions in childhood. Cow's milk proteins can be present in pharmaceutical excipients. METHODS: We have analyzed paediatric literature on allergic reactions to cow's milk proteins in medication, focusing on the different routes of administration (inhaled, parental and oral). RESULTS: Dry-powder inhalers may contain lactose as excipient. Lactose can be rarely contaminated with milk proteins and it may induce allergic reactions in patients with cow's milk allergy. Case reports have described immediate hypersensitivity reactions to me

Moreover, milk proteins are precursors of many different biologically active peptides which are inactive within the sequence of the precursor protein but can be released by enzymatic proteolysis. Many milk protein-derived peptides, such as caseinophosphopeptides, reveal multi-functional bioactivities. Cross-sensitization between milk proteins: reactivity to a "kosher" epitope?

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin E-mediated allergy to cow's milk protein represents a major problem for infants who are not breast fed. A search for substitute milks revealed a cross-allergenicity to milk derived from goat and sheep but not to milk from a mare. We noted that the cow, goat and sheep species are both artiodactyls and ruminants, defining them as kosher animals, in contrast to the mare. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether patients with IgE-mediated cow's milk allergy are cross-sensitized to milk from other species such as the deer, ibex, buffalo, pig and camel. METHODS: Patients with a
