Effects of Formula Milk Feeding in Premature Infants: A Systematic Review.

The preterm baby is born at a critical period for the growth and development of the gastrointestinal and neuromotor systems. Breast milk is the food of choice for infants during the first months of life, as it provides multiple short- and long-term benefits to preterm and sick newborns. Despite this, breastfeeding is often nutritionally insufficient, requiring the addition of fortifiers. In other cases, it is important to ensure the necessary nutrients and calories, which can be provided by formula milk or pasteurized and fortified donated human milk. However, the specific guidelines for the u

Human milk donation in Australia: a qualitative study of donors and potential donors.

BACKGROUND: Milk banks in Australia rely on the generosity of voluntary donors, enabling them to provide pasteurised donor human milk to vulnerable infants in hospitals. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences and perceptions of donating to a milk bank amongst breastfeeding women who are milk donors, or potentially eligible to donate milk. Having a deeper understanding of the barriers and facilitators for donating to a milk bank will promote sustainability of these services. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was used to collect data from 31 participants, either donating, o

Use of clinical information to predict the characteristics of bacteria isolated from clinical cases of bovine mastitis.

Farmers recorded the clinical signs of cows with clinical mastitis and submitted milk samples for bacteriological examination, so that the clinical signs could be correlated with the bacteriological findings. Odds ratios for the demeanour of the cow, the appearance of the milk, milk yield, udder texture, and the administration of parenteral antibiotics were calculated for mastitis cases classified in terms of their microbiology as either enterobacteriaceae, major Gram-positive pathogens, minor pathogens, 'no growths' or 'all other pathogens'. Animals infected with enterobacteriaceae had the hi

[Synchronization of ovulation (OVSYNCH) in high producing dairy cattle herds. Part II: Milk yield, diseases and cost-benefit-analysis].

A method for synchronization of ovulation (OVSYNCH) was evaluated for its practical use in seven North German dairy cattle herds. The original procedure of PURSLEY et al. (1995) was applied, i. e. cows were treated with Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH) at a random stage of the estrous cycle, followed by an injection of a prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha)-analog seven days later and another injection of GnRH two days after PGF2alpha. Cows were inseminated 24 h after the last injection by artificial insemination. Control animals were assigned by corresponding lactation number and month of l

[Specific features of the motor function of the digestive organs in persons with different degree of resistance to motion sickness].

The effect of three exposures to Coriolis acceleration on the frequency and amplitude of fasting stomach contractions was investigated in 6 resistant and 16 susceptible to motion sickness test subjects. After tests all of them underwent gastroduodenoscopy and 4 subjects from each group were subjected to echography to measure gall bladder contractility in response to glucose-milk loads. After tests the motor activity of the stomach increased slightly in resistant subjects due to an increase of the amplitude and a slight decrease of biopotential frequency. During gastroscopy antral and pyloric s

Characteristics of the first human milk bank in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of feeding human milk to infants, even in prematurity, have been well documented. Well-organized donor milk processing has made the milk bank a good source of nutrition for premature or sick infants if their own mother's milk is not sufficient or suitable. The Taipei City Hospital Milk Bank was established in 2005 and is the first nonprofit human milk bank to operate in Taiwan. METHODS: The milk bank has adopted standards of practice laid down by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America and United Kingdom Association for Milk Banking. The clinical character

Maternal immune activation accelerates pup reflex development and alters immune proteins in pup stomach contents and brain.

Prenatal infection increases the risk for neurodevelopmental disorders including autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. To better understand this link, a number of maternal immune activation (MIA) rodent models have been studied. However, the majority of these studies focus on adult behavioural outcomes that mirror adult symptoms related to neurodevelopmental disorders. There is little research reporting the effects of MIA on early postnatal development and even fewer using outbred mouse strains. Here, we use a modified version of the Fox scale to assess the effects of two MIA models, a b

The Profile of Donors to a Human Milk Bank in a Developing Nation.

Background: Donor human milk plays a vital part in the care of sick neonates. There is paucity of literature on the profile of human milk donors of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Materials and Methods: This retrospective observational study evaluated the demographic profile of 1,553 donors of a human milk bank of a tertiary care center from a LMIC over a period of 21 months. Results: The mean age of the donors was 21.6 ± 2.7 years. Around 63% of the donors were from the postnatal care wards and 53.3% had given birth to a premature infant. The total volume of human milk donated was 4

Presence of Clostridium botulinum and botulinum toxin in milk and udder tissue of dairy cows with suspected botulism.

Clostridium botulinum is an anaerobic spore-forming bacterium prevalent in the environment, and causes botulism in man and animals via toxins. Dairy cattle may be contaminated or infected by feed, water or other environmental factors. Milk may also carry the pathogen. Hence, milk and udder samples need to be tested. The number of clinical cases of bovine botulism in Germany has been increasing since the mid-1990s. Besides routine samples, additional 99 milk samples from 37 farms, and 51 udder samples from 51 farms from sick animals presumably affected by botulism were tested microbiologically

Developing a Framework for Culturally Sensitive Breastfeeding Interventions: A Community Needs Assessment of Breastfeeding Experiences and Practices in a Black Immigrant Community.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Despite high breastfeeding initiation rates nationwide, disparities in breastfeeding continuation among Black mothers remain a public health issue. The BreastFeed Iowa Black Immigrant Project aimed to improve breastfeeding rates among low-income Black immigrant mother-infant dyads in Johnson County, Iowa by exploring factors influencing breastfeeding retention and developing a framework for culturally sensitive breastfeeding interventions. METHODS: Using a descriptive cross-sectional study design, we employed a convergent, parallel mixed-methods approach to explore fact

Neurological disorders and travel.

Travel is associated with a number of neurological disorders that can be divided into two categories: (1) Neurological infections including encephalitides, neurotuberculosis, neurobrucellosis, cysticercosis and trichinosis. Some of these disorders can be prevented by vaccinations, such as Japanese B encephalitis and rabies, some by the use of insect repellents and some by avoiding raw milk products and undercooked meat. (2) Non-infective neurological disorders, such as acute mountain sickness and high altitude cerebral oedema, problems occurring during air travel such as syncope, seizures, str

The role of human milk feeds on inotrope use in newborn infants with sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Regarding neonatal hypotension, there is no certainty as to whether inotrope properties are beneficial or whether they may be harmful. However, given that the antioxidant content of human milk plays a compensatory role in neonatal sepsis and that human milk feeding has direct effects in modulating the cardiovascular function of sick neonates, this research hypothesized that human milk feeds might predict lower requirements of vasopressors in the management of neonatal septic shock. METHOD: Between January 2002 and December 2017, all late preterm and full-term infants attending a n

Bereaved mothers' experience of expressing and donating breast milk: An interpretative phenomenological study.

Perinatal loss is a devastating event for any mother. What is often overlooked is a mothers continued ability to lactate following the death of her child. Donor breast milk is a commodity highly sought after given its value for feeding sick babies resident in Neonatal Intensive Care Units. This study aimed to explore the lived experience of mothers who have expressed and donated their breast milk following the loss of their infant. Seven bereaved mothers who donated milk to the Human Milk Bank in Northern Ireland were recruited. These women took part in semistructured interviews, which explore

Acidified Feedings in Preterm Infants: A Historical and Physiological Perspective.

The use of acidified milk for feeding infants has a long, interesting history that appears to have developed from the use of buttermilk in Holland as early as the late 19th century for feeding infants with diarrhea. Physicians in the early 20th century assumed that the observed benefits were from buttermilk's acidity leading to the practice of acidifying infant formula. The historical and physiological perspective on the use of acidified infant formula is now especially relevant with the emergence of an acidified liquid human milk fortifier for preterm infants. Here, we review that history, wi

Breast milk jaundice in premature infants.

In randomised study of 186 preterm infants those fed on maternal or banked breast milk had a significantly higher peak bilirubin concentration and a more prolonged jaundice than infants fed an artificial preterm formula and were over four times more likely to achieve plasma bilirubin values above 200 mumol/l (11.7 mg/100 ml). This dietary effect was seen even in a high risk subgroup of sick ventilated infants below 1500 g who were receiving restricted enteral intakes. We suggest that breast milk jaundice in preterm infants may increase clinical intervention. Our findings are discussed in the l

Anthrax in man and cattle in Bangladesh.

The occurrence of anthrax in 62 cattle and 27 humans in Pabna milk shed areas of Bangladesh was recorded during 1980-84. There were 62 sick animals: 43 (69%) died, 14 (23%) recovered with penicillin treatment and only five (8%) were slaughtered in a moribund stage, for human consumption. All 27 people who developed malignant pustules were cured with penicillin treatment within 14 days.

Area postrema lesions in rats enhance the magnitude of body rotation-induced conditioned taste aversions.

The role of the area postrema, a circumventricular organ located on the dorsal medulla in the fourth ventricle, in body rotation-induced conditioned taste aversions was examined in male hooded rats. One group of rats received lesions of the area postrema, another group was given sham lesions, and two other groups received no surgery. Three groups of rats, those with area postrema lesions, those with sham lesions, and one unoperated group, were given pairings of 1-hr access to a 0.1% sodium saccharin solution with 30 min of body rotation at 70 rpm (on a schedule of 15-sec on--5-sec off). Proactive Management of Lactation in the Birth Hospital to Ensure Long-Term Milk Production and Sustainable Breastfeeding.

Individuals who are at risk of not achieving a full milk supply are often overlooked in scientific literature. There is available guidance to help establish an adequate milk supply for healthy individuals experiencing a physiologic labor and birth, and there are robust recommendations for the lactating parents of small, sick, and preterm newborns to ensure that these newborns can receive human milk. Missing from the literature are clinical practice guidelines that address the preexisting health, pregnancy, birth, or newborn-related risk factors for suboptimal lactation. This can include risk f

The Early Prediction of Common Disorders in Dairy Cows Monitored by Automatic Systems with Machine Learning Algorithms.

We use multidimensional data from automated monitoring systems and milking systems to predict disorders of dairy cows by employing eight machine learning algorithms. The data included the season, days in milking, parity, age at the time of disorders, milk yield (kg/day), activity (unitless), six variables related to rumination time, and two variables related to the electrical conductivity of milk. We analyze 131 sick cows and 149 healthy cows with identical lactation days and parity; all data are collected on the same day, which corresponds to the diagnosis day for disordered cows. Prevalence, Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern and Associated Factors of Staphylococcus Aureus Among Camel's Raw Milk in Babile District, Oromia, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a versatile pathogen that causes diseases. Raw milk is an ideal, rich medium that helps and supports the growth of microorganisms and is highly susceptible to S. aureus immediately after milking. As camel milk was usually consumed in its raw state in pastoralist areas, the contamination and intoxication of raw milk due to pathogenic S. aureus were a public health problem. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to determine the prevalence, antibiotic resistance pattern, and associated factors of S. aureus in raw camel milk in Babile District, Oromia Region,
