As little as sixty seconds' exposure of commercial latex condoms to mineral oil, a common component of hand lotions and other lubricants used during sexual intercourse, caused approximately 90% decrease in the strength of the condoms, as measured by their burst volumes in the standard ISO (International Standards Organization) Air Burst Test. INTRODUCTION: Chronic constipation is a common symptom in pediatrics, and physicians often use mineral oil to treat chronic constipation in children. Mineral oil, a hydrocarbon, may not elicit a normal protective cough reflex and may impair mucociliary transport. These effects can increase the likelihood of its aspiration and subsequent impaired clearance from the respiratory tract. We report a case of a child with neurodevelopmental delay with chronic constipation and a history of chronic mineral oil ingestion presenting as asymptomatic exogenous lipoid pneumonia (ELP).

The Foley catheter provides for urinary drainage by a self-retaining inflatable balloon mechanism. The morbidity associated with its use is minimal. However, blockage of the balloon port occasionally occurs, making its removal difficult. We discuss the various strategies used for catheter removal and recommend the use of mineral oil as the first line of intervention because of its reliability, safety and cost-effectiveness.
