The present study was to evaluate the effect of trace minerals (Zn, Mn, and Cu) from complexed amino acid minerals (ZMCAA) and bis-glycinate chelated minerals (ZMCGly) in laying hen diets on performance, internal and external egg quality, yolk mineral deposition, intestinal morphometry, and bone characteristics. From 78 to 98 weeks of age, 400 White LSL-Lite strain laying hens were distributed in a randomized design with 4 treatments with 10 replicates per treatment. Treatments were distributed in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement using either Zn, Mn, and Cu of ZMCAA or ZMCGly source at 2 levels:

The high purity of clay minerals is a key factor to reconstruct the palaeoclimate in clay mineralogy, however, the existence of iron minerals (such as goethite and hematite) and organics lead to the intergrowth of clay minerals and other minerals, producing other mineral impurities in enriched clay minerals. Although the removal of organics in soil sediments has been fully investigated, the occurrence state of iron minerals remains controversial, hindering the preparation of high-purity clay minerals. Therefore, the occurrence relationship of iron minerals and clay minerals in Jiujiang net-lik

Osteopenia and rickets remain a problem for high-risk infants, especially preterm infants <1500 g birthweight (very low birth weight, VLBW). The primary cause of osteopenia in VLBW infants is a low intake of calcium and phosphorus compared to requirements for the rapidly growing skeleton. Human milk is a relatively low mineral containing substance and cannot meet the bone mineral needs of very low birth weight infants. As such, most VLBW infants need additional bone minerals and in many neonatal care units these are provided as part of human milk fortificants or specialized infant formulas. In

For decades, the focus of managing autoimmune hypothyroidism has been on thyroxine replacement. Correcting lab parameters such as thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) has been a primary goal. The increasing prevalence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) continues to impact the quality of life in patients. We believe a holistic approach to this disease entity, considering its underlying complex etiopathogenesis, would benefit patients. Nutraceuticals are combinations of essential nutrients and are becoming a part of novel medical treatments despite the lack of regulation. This review aims to present a

Thalassaemia major (TM) is a hereditary blood disease characterised by reduced or absent production of beta globin chains. Erythrocyte transfusions are given to raise the haemoglobin level in patients with thalassaemia major. However, transfusions have been related to increased risk of iron overload and tissue damage related to excess iron. Both elevated oxidative stress due to iron overload and increased hemolysis lead to over utilisation of minerals required for antioxidant enzymes activities. Iron chelators have been used to prevent iron overload in thalassaemia major patients, but these ch

Indiscriminate use of multivitamin/mineral supplements in the general population may be misguided, but patients with chronic Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) should be monitored and compensated for nutritional deficiencies. Mechanistic links between vitamin/mineral deficiencies and IBD pathology has been found for some micronutrients and normalizing their levels is clinically beneficial. Others, like vitamin A, although instinctively desirable, produced disappointing results. Restoring normal levels of the selected micronutrients requires elevated doses to compensate for defects in absorptive

Earth's subsurface offers one of the best possible sites to search for microbial life and the characteristic lithologies that life leaves behind. The subterrain may be equally valuable for astrobiology. Where surface conditions are particularly hostile, like on Mars, the subsurface may offer the only habitat for extant lifeforms and access to recognizable biosignatures. We have identified numerous unequivocally biogenic macroscopic, microscopic, and chemical/geochemical cave biosignatures. However, to be especially useful for astrobiology, we are looking for suites of characteristics. Ideally,

Osteoporosis is a multifactorial disease with dimensions of genetics, endocrine function, exercise and nutritional considerations. Of particular considerations are calcium (Ca) status, Vitamin D, fluoride, magnesium and other trace elements. Several trace elements, particularly copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn), are essential in bone metabolism as cofactors for specific enzymes. Our investigations regarding the role of Cu, Mn and Zn in bone metabolism include data from studies with animals on Cu- and Mn-deficient diets. We have also demonstrated cellular deficiencies using bone powder

Over 40% of cancer patients use supplements, such as herbs, vitamins, and minerals, while undergoing anticancer treatment. Patients often take these supplements because they assume they improve overall health, reduce side effects, or correct deficiencies. However, these products may carry risks, including pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamic interactions with anticancer drugs. We present an overview of potential interactions between commonly used supplements and anticancer therapies, which can assist clinicians in evaluating their safety. Communication between clinicians and patients about herbs

Aquatic animals have unique physiological mechanisms to absorb and retain minerals from their diets and water. Research and development in the area of mineral nutrition of farmed fish and crustaceans have been relatively slow and major gaps exist in the knowledge of trace element requirements, physiological functions and bioavailability from feed ingredients. Quantitative dietary requirements have been reported for three macroelements (calcium, phosphorus and magnesium) and six trace minerals (zinc, iron, copper, manganese, iodine and selenium) for selected fish species. Mineral deficiency sig

Minerals are essential nutrients for the body, are of inorganic nature which gives them the characteristic of being resistant to heat, are involved in a lot of chemical reactions in metabolism, regulating electrolyte balance, in maintaining bone, in the process of blood clotting and the transmission of nerve impulses, particularly its role as enzyme cofactors confers a key role in various physiological processes. Glucose homeostasis involves a fine coordination of events where hormonal control by insulin plays a key role. However, the role of minerals like magnesium, zinc, chromium, iron and s

Exercise has been shown to increase indirect measures of lipid peroxidation. However, exercise and training appear to augment the body's anti-oxidant defence system. Whether this augmented defence system can keep up with the increase in lipid peroxidation with exercise is not known. Iron depletion is experienced by many athletes, especially female endurance athletes and adolescents, but iron deficiency anaemia is rare. Iron depletion could affect the ability to train and recover from strenuous exercise, but this has not been examined. There is a concern that female athletes, especially adolesc

Little information is available on absorption and metabolism of minerals and trace elements during infancy. The lack of data is related to the methodological problems involved in these studies. By using stable isotopes as labels, studies can be conducted in infants without introducing exposure to radiation, or any other risk, and studies on bioavailability of minerals and trace elements during early life can therefore be performed. This paper discusses results from studies of trace element/mineral absorption and metabolism in infants, based on stable isotope techniques.

Millions of people suffer and many die from lack of minute traces of nutrients. Methods of prevention are cheap and simple. Their universal application could yield health and economic benefits comparable to those achieved by smallpox eradication.

This paper examines whether mineral supplements are necessary for athletes, and whether these supplements will enhance performance. Macrominerals (calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus) and trace minerals (zinc, copper, selenium, chromium, and iron) are described. Calcium supplements are important for the health of bones. Athletes tend to have enhanced calcium status as assessed by bone mineral density, with the notable exception of female amenorrhoeic athletes. Magnesium status is adequate for most athletes, and there is no evidence that magnesium supplements can enhance performance. Phosphorus

Minerals are essential for crustacean growth, development, and reproduction. This study investigated fluctuations in concentrations of twelve minerals in the hepatopancreas, ovary, and muscle of adult female Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) throughout ovarian maturation (stages II-V), and explored potential mineral transfers between tissues and associated mineral-related gene expression patterns. Results showed a significant increase in five macro-minerals (Na, K, Ca, P, Mg) and most trace minerals (except Fe, Co, Mo) in the ovary (P < 0.05). In contrast, most minerals in the hepatopa

This review focuses on analysing existing research to offer a comprehensive understanding of the complex role minerals play in the pathophysiology of ischaemia. By examining changes in mineral levels, we aim to uncover the mechanisms by which these elements influence the onset and severity of ischaemic heart disease (IHD). Imbalances in key minerals (biologically active metal ions present in blood plasma and/or cells in dissolved form) such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese and copper have been closely associated with the onset and progression of IHD. Disrupted calcium and magnesium level

BACKGROUND-AIM: Hemodialysis is the most common reliable therapy of renal replacement in Kidney Disease, especially, the end stage renal disease (ESRD), characterized with the complete loss of kidney function, including excretion of wastes and fluids, control of blood acid-base and mineral concentrations. During hemodialysis, kidney roles are restored, by the balance of substances between the dialysis fluid and patients' blood. However, it may cause serious disturbances of some minerals concentrations in patients' blood, like (Zn, Cu, Mg, etc.), if hemodialysis conditions weren't suitable. Thi
