Comparison between major and minor surgical procedures for the treatment of chronic staple line disruption after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has become the most common weight loss surgery procedure. The procedure's most dreaded surgical complication is staple-line disruption (SLD). So far, no definitive treatment modality has been established for this complication. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to review the treatment options used at our institution for patients with SLD after LSG and to evaluate the outcome of different interventions. METHODS: A retrospective review of a prospectively collected database of all patients who underwent SLD between January 2005 and April 2014

Evaluation of Different Positive End-Expiratory Pressures Using Supreme™ Airway Laryngeal Mask during Minor Surgical Procedures in Children.

Background and objectives: The laryngeal mask is the method of choice for airway management in children during minor surgical procedures. There is a paucity of data regarding optimal management of mechanical ventilation in these patients. The Supreme™ airway laryngeal mask offers the option to insert a gastric tube to empty the stomach contents of air and/or gastric juice. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the impact of positive end-expiratory positive pressure (PEEP) levels on ventilation parameters and gastric air insufflation during general anesthesia in children using pressure-

Evaluating the Anxiolytic Efficacy of Oral Alprazolam in Modulating Vital Parameters During Minor Oral Surgical Procedures: A Quasi-experimental Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dental anxiety is a prevalent issue among patients undergoing minor oral surgical procedures such as extractions, biopsies, and implant placement. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of oral alprazolam as a premedicative anxiolytic agent on vital parameters, including pulse rate (PR), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP, respectively), respiratory rate (RR), and oxygen saturation (SpO2), in patients undergoing minor oral surgeries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted on patients aged 18-45 years who required minor oral surgical proc

Steroid supplementation before minor oral surgical procedures in patients taking long-term glucocorticoids: A triple-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing long-term glucocorticoid therapy are administered additional glucocorticoids before minor dental procedures, although this is not supported by evidence. The authors designed this study to validate the hypothesis that routine blanket glucocorticoid supplementation is unnecessary during minor oral surgical procedures under local anesthesia. METHODS: The authors recruited 270 patients into 3 groups (1:1:1 allocation) from the dental outpatient department. Primary outcomes were changes in hemodynamic parameters and frequency of adverse events among the 3 groups. Th

The influence of a eutectic mixture of lidocaine and prilocaine on minor surgical procedures: a randomized controlled double-blind trial.

BACKGROUND: A eutectic mixture of lidocaine and prilocaine (EMLA) has been shown to be effective in reducing pain from needle sticks, including those associated with blood sampling and intravenous insertion. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of EMLA cream applied before needle puncture for local anesthetic administration before minor surgical procedures in this double-blind, randomized, controlled, parallel-group study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients were randomly assigned to receive EMLA or placebo cream (Aqueous) applied under an occlusive dressing. After the procedure, patients we

Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) in the mediastinum: long-term survival animal experiments in transesophageal access, including minor surgical procedures.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) within the peritoneal cavity is rapidly evolving, using transgastric, transcolonic, or transvaginal access. There is little experience with transesophageal NOTES access to the mediastinum. This prospective long-term animal survival study was performed to explore the feasibility and safety of transesophageal intrathoracic procedures including minor surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Nine pigs were used for acute (n = 2) and up to 6-week survival studies (n = 7), followed by autopsy and histological investigation. Th

[Superselective transarterial embolisation of the hypogastric artery and it's branches in the management of unresectable intrapelvic malignant tumors with minor surgical procedures].

Three patients with recurrent uterine cancer, unresectable rectal cancer, and recurrent rectal cancer in the pelvis were treated by percutaneous superselective transarterial embolisation (TAE) of the hypogastric artery and it's branches with ethanol or gelatin sponge particles. TAE was performed for the control of life-threatening hemorrhage, severe pain and the diminishing tumor's bulk. In addition to conservative cares, this TAE needed minor surgical procedures such as urinary diversion, colostomy and drainage of abdominal abscess just when urinary bladder's necrosis, rectosigmoidal necrosis

A Comparison Between the Effectiveness of Isoamyl 2-Cyanoacrylate Tissue Adhesive and Silk Sutures in Wound Closure Following Minor Oral Surgical Procedures: A Prospective Clinical Study.

Background In order to maintain the surgery site's shape, functionality, and aesthetics, closure of the wound is essential for intra-oral and general surgical procedures. Wound closure speeds up healing by reducing the buildup of inflammatory cells. For a wound to heal well, the incision must be precise, the tissue must be handled delicately, the wound must be precisely repositioned, and the closure material must have optimum functional properties and be sterile. Aim This study aims to conduct a clinical comparison of the effectiveness of silk suture versus isoamyl 2-cyanoacrylate (IAC) for in

Surgical day care: a review of 5,427 cases.

A surgical day care unit was established at the Kaplan Hospital, Rehovot, in 1975. This study includes 5,427 patients who underwent ear, nose and throat, gynecologic, eye and plastic surgery as well as other surgical procedures in the unit. The organization and staffing of the unit are also described. The feasibility of performing minor to intermediate surgical procedures requiring general anesthesia on a day basis is demonstrated. The experience gained shows that high medical standards are achieved with low resource expenditure. The cost per patient is significantly reduced. Absenteeism from

Impact of NSAIDs on post-operative bleeding in minor dental and oral surgery: A clinical study.

Post-operative bleeding is a common concern after minor dental and oral surgical procedures. NSAID use after surgery remains controversial because of its potential effect on platelet aggregation and bleeding time. A prospective observational study was conducted on 100 patients undergoing routine dental extractions, third molar surgery, alveoloplasty, or minor soft tissue procedures. All patients received NSAID-based analgesic regimens following surgery. Statistical analysis demonstrated no significant association between NSAID administration and clinically significant post-operative bleeding.
