Infective endocarditis caused by Proteus mirabilis is rare and is fatal in most cases. A case of a 64-year-old man presenting with fever, dysuria, and murmur is reported. P mirabilis endocarditis was diagnosed based on clinical presentation, blood culture findings, and the presence of a large mitral valve vegetation seen on echocardiogram. The patient survived after long-term antibiotics and surgical replacement of the mitral valve. The clinical characteristics and complications from reported cases of P mirabilis endocarditis are reviewed.

Given the need to understand the virulence profile of Proteus mirabilis isolates from cellulitis in broiler chickens and their ability to cause lesions, the present study aimed to characterize genotypically and phenotypically the virulence profiles of two strains of P. mirabilis isolated from cellulitis in broilers, as well as to evaluate their ability to experimentally reproduce the lesions in vivo. The strain with the highest virulence potential (LBUEL-A33) possessed mrpA, pmfA, ucaA, atfA (fimbriae), zapA, ptA (proteases), hpmA (hemolysin), and ireA (siderophore) genes, formed a very strong

Proteus mirabilis is a causative agent of cystitis and pyelonephritis primarily in individuals with indwelling catheters or structural abnormalities of the urinary tract. The organism produces a variety of unique virulence factors that contribute to its pathogenicity and persistence in the human host.

Cellulitis is a common bacterial skin infection typically caused by organisms such as Streptococcus and Staphylococcus species. Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis), a gram-negative rod more often linked to urinary tract infections, is not a frequent cause of cellulitis. However, certain biological traits like motility and the ability to form biofilms can occasionally contribute to infections in compromised tissue. This case discusses an uncommon presentation of cellulitis involving P. mirabilis and its clinical management. An 81-year-old woman with a history of vascular disease and other chronic

The exclusion of opportunistic pathogens is important for protecting animal health and ensuring desired research outcomes in highly immunodeficient mice. Proteus mirabilis has been associated with gastrointestinal tract lesions, septicemia, pyelonephritis, splenomegaly, and hepatitis and can influence select mouse models. To inform health-surveillance practices after we experienced difficulty in excluding P. mirabilis from our mouse colony, we aimed to determine the likelihood of detecting P. mirabilis-positive immunocompromised (SRG), immunovague (Fbn1+/-), and immunocompetent (CD1) colony mi

Bacterial biofilms were observed on 69 of 75 catheters taken from patients undergoing long-term bladder management. Ten catheters were colonized by pure cultures of Proteus mirabilis. In each of these cases the bacteria formed layers on the catheter surface, underlying encrustations of struvite and hydroxyapatite which partially or completely occluded the catheter lumen. Encrustation was also apparent on catheters colonized by P. mirabilis plus other species, but was rarely seen on catheters colonized by non-urease-producing species. These observations support the hypothesis that catheter encr

Swabs were taken for culture from the periurethral area and urethral meatus in 124 uncircumcised and 60 circumcised boys. Proteus mirabilis was grown from 28 (22.6%) swabs from uncircumcised boys and from only one (1.7%) swab from circumcised boys. This supports the idea that the prepuce may be the source of proteus urinary tract infection.

BACKGROUND: Proteus mirabilis is the second most common pathogen that causes urinary tract infections after Escherichia coli. In rare cases, it is associated with vertebral osteomyelitis. The underlying mechanism of this relationship may be related to the retrograde dissemination of bacteria through the paravertebral venous plexus.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of an 80-year-old Taiwanese woman who had recurrent episodes of fever and chronic back pain for 1 year. All blood cultures were positive for P. mirabilis. Inflammation scans and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a previously un

Proteus mirabilis is a component of the normal intestinal microflora of humans and animals, but can cause urinary tract infections and even sepsis in hospital settings. In recent years, the number of multidrug-resistant P. mirabilis isolates, including the ones producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs), is increasing worldwide. However, the number of investigations dedicated to this species, especially, whole-genome sequencing, is much lower in comparison to the members of the ESKAPE pathogens group. This study presents a detailed analysis of clinical multidrug-resistant ESBL-producing

Intramedullary spinal cord abscesses are rare and potentially devastating lesions usually associated with other infective processes such as bacterial endocarditis, or pulmonary or urogenital infection. We describe a 2-year-old girl who presented with an infected dermal sinus leading to an intraspinal abscess. This abscess eventually spread and involved the entire neural axis leaving her quadriparetic. Drainage of the abscess resulted in recovery and the child regained normal function of her limbs. To our knowledge this is the first documented case of an intramedullary abscess involving the ent

The extreme metal tolerance of up to 130 mM NiSO4 in Streptomyces mirabilis P16B-1 was investigated. Genome sequencing revealed the presence of a large linear plasmid, pI. To identify plasmid-encoded determinants of metal resistance, a newly established transformation system was used to characterize the predicted plasmid-encoded loci nreB, hoxN, and copYZ. Reintroduction into the plasmid-cured S. mirabilis ΔpI confirmed that the predicted metal transporter gene nreB constitutes a nickel resistance factor, which was further supported by its heterologous expression in Escherichia coli. In contra

Ureolytic biomineralization induced by urease-producing bacteria, particularly Proteus mirabilis, is responsible for the formation of urinary tract calculi and the encrustation of indwelling urinary catheters. Such microbial biofilms are challenging to eradicate and contribute to the persistence of catheter-associated urinary tract infections, but the mechanisms responsible for this recalcitrance remain obscure. In this study, we characterized the susceptibility of wild-type (ure+) and urease-negative (ure-) P. mirabilis biofilms to killing by ciprofloxacin. Ure+ biofilms produced fine biomine

The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of Proteus mirabilis to swarm over various types of urinary catheters. The test strain was found to swarm over catheters for distances of up to 10 cm within 24 h. Migration was significantly more rapid over hydrogel-coated latex catheters than over all-silicone or silicone-coated latex catheters. Scanning electron micrographs revealed discrete rafts of typically elongated swarmer cells on catheter surfaces. Migration of swarmers along catheters into the bladder could thus initiate Proteus mirabilis catheter-associated infections.

The complete core structure present in the lipopolysaccharide of the R mutant R110/1959 from Proteus mirabilis (Proteus type II core) was investigated using methylation analysis and a number of degradation methods such as Smith degradation and beta-elimination. These studies combined with earlier work on a Rc-type mutant of P. mirabilis O28 (R4/O28) which shares the same inner core region, allowed formulation of the complete core structure of the Proteus type II core as shown in Scheme 1. (formula; see text) A characteristic feature of the Proteus core of type II is the presence of two units o

INTRODUCTION: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by chronic inflammation and ulceration in colonic mucosa, accompanied by a defective epithelial barrier. Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis) bacterium is a putative intestinal pathogen with invasive ability, yet its role in UC inflammation and gut barrier disruption is unclear. This study aims to investigate its epidemiological presence, pathogenic roles and preventive strategy during UC inflammation.
METHOD: P. mirabilis culture and PCR amplification of the P. mirabilis-specific ureR gene were used to detect fecal P. mirabilis and determine

Proteus mirabilis, a gram-negative bacterium commonly known for causing urinary tract infections (UTI) can rarely present with central nervous system (CNS) infections. Proteus mirabilis CNS infections are usually encountered in the neonatal and infantile period and occasionally cause brain abscesses. It is an uncommon cause of adult CNS infection. We report the first case of a community-acquired Proteus mirabilis meningitis (PMM) in a patient with Proteus mirabilis UTI, urolithiasis, and bacteremia. Risk factors for gram-negative bacillary meningitis (GNBM) include extremes of age, cancer hist
