This study aims at the identification of endo- and ectoparasites in broiler farms while assessing their prevalence in semi-open and closed rearing systems in Lebanon. Seventeen semi-open and six closed broiler farms were investigated in various Lebanese provinces between March and September 2020 and 2021. Intestinal and composite litter samples were collected and observed for morphological identification of prevalent parasites. Results notably revealed the prevalence of mites in all of the surveyed farms. Moreover, mixed mite-helminth infestation was recorded in 100% of the semi-open farms and

Records of domestic animals brought to the Veterinary Entomology Laboratory for diagnosis of suspected lice and mite infestation over a 10 year period were analysed. From a total of 794 suspected cases, 137 (17.3%) and 247 (31.1%) were positive for lice and mange mites respectively. The most common lice species recorded were Linognathus vituli (66.7%) on cattle, L. ovillus (83.3%) on sheep, Haematopinus suis (100%) on pigs and Menacanthus stramineus (54.5%) on poultry. Other lice species recorded included Haematopinus bovis and Solenopotes capillatus on cattle, Damalinia ovis on sheep, Linogna

We report an outbreak of pigeon mite infestation involving two patients, two nurses, and one physician on a medical ward in a municipal hospital. The index patient developed a diffuse, pruritic erythematous maculopapular rash on his trunk and extremities. Dermanyssus gallinae, a nonburrowing, blood-sucking avian mite was identified on the patient and his bedding. A second patient who complained of scalp pruritus had mites present on her pillow and bed linen. The intern taking care of both patients, and two nurses who had contact with these patients, had mite infestation. Pigeons roosting on th

BACKGROUND: Mange is a parasitic skin disease caused by microscopic mites that feed on the skin of small ruminants and affect animal productivity.
METHODS: A study was carried out to determine the prevalence and possible risk factors for mite infestation in small ruminants in Kindo Didaye district, Wolaita zone, southern Ethiopia. Skin scraping samples were collected from 384 small ruminants (196 goats and 188 sheep) for the identification of mite species following the standard parasitological protocol.
RESULTS: Of the 384 examined animals, 6.25% of sheep and goats were infested with differe

To better recognize the pathogenicity of ocular Demodex mites, we analysed Bacillus oleronius infection in patients with Demodex-related chronic blepharitis. The studies were conducted on 68 adult patients, in whom ophthalmological and parasitological tests permitted the distinction of a group of 38 patients with a diagnosis of Demodex-related chronic blepharitis (group 1, including a subgroup 1a with moderate blepharitis and a subgroup 1b with severe blepharitis) and a group of 30 healthy individuals (group 2). In every person studied six eyelashes were epilated from each eye and the number o

Interspersed repeats are a major component of most eukaryotic genomes and have an impact on genome size and stability, but the repetitive element landscape of crocodilian genomes has not yet been fully investigated. In this report, we provide the first detailed characterization of an interspersed repeat element in any crocodilian genome. Chompy is a putative miniature inverted-repeat transposable element (MITE) family initially recovered from the genome of Alligator mississippiensis (American alligator) but also present in the genomes of Crocodylus moreletii (Morelet's crocodile) and Gavialis

Intense iritation and dermatitis, somewhat resembling that produced by scabies can result from various mites living as temporary ectoparasites on the skin of man. Demodex folliculorum is a worm-like mite that infests hair follicles above the level of sebaceous glands in various mammals. In this paper, Demodex folliculorum was recovered from a boy and his pet dog. Both the boy and the dog were successfully treated with permethrin.

A sheep reared outdoors in Victoria was found to be heavily infested with a stored product mite, Sancassania berlesei (Acaridae), apparently subsequent to an earlier flystrike. Laboratory observation revealed the infestation to be self-sustaining. Shearing rapidly resolved the infestation but treatment with diazinon was ineffective. The infestation could be transferred to other sheep only in the presence of moisture; once established it caused an extensive skin lesion with considerable fluid loss, apparently contributing to the death of one animal. This lesion was extremely attractive to blowf

This study was performed on eighty patients with clinical manifestations of scabies. Sarcoptes scabiei adult or larva was isolated from 39 patients (48.8%). Dermanyssus gallinae (red poultry mite) and Dermatophagoides sp. were isolated from 6 and 5 patients respectively. Punch biopsies were taken from the patients, stained with haematoxylin and eosin and direct immunofluorescence stain to study the immunopathological status of the skin infested with three species of mites. The results declared that the pathological changes and the immunoglobulin deposition in the skin were nearly similar regar

BACKGROUND: The European poultry red mite (PRM) Dermanyssus gallinae, a common ectoparasite of laying chickens and pigeons; it also can feed on other birds, humans and domestic animals, causing clinical signs ranging from mild discomfort to severe dermatitis. Little is known about possible hypersensitivity to PRM or cross-sensitization with house dust or storage mites.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Knowledge on possible PRM immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergy and possible cross-sensitization with house dust and storage mites may facilitate the clinical approach. The aim herein was to clarify pos

Understanding the nutritional interplay among plants, pests, and natural enemies is essential for sustainable pest management. Enhancing the efficiency of natural enemies, such as Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is critical, and exploiting herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) offers a promising approach. However, N. californicus has rarely been reported to utilize HIPVs to improve their biological control capabilities. Our research revealed a significant difference in the diversity of volatile compounds detected in clean Citrus reticulata Blanco leaves compared to

For a number of reasons, several of the more 'traditional' ectoparasiticides in the small animal veterinarian's armoury have been withdrawn over the past few years. New, safer products which are long-acting and easier to apply than the conventional dips, rinses and aerosol sprays of the past have replaced them. However, relatively few such novel acaricidal preparations have become commercially available. Consequently, practitioners and researchers frequently experiment with the drugs they have at their disposal to assess their efficacy against a variety of target acarids when used at different

Case series summaryThis case series describes 21 client-owned cats with naturally acquired harvest mite infestation treated with a single oral dose of lotilaner. All cats were diagnosed at baseline by visual identification of characteristic orange larvae on the skin. A total of 12 cats underwent microscopic parasitological evaluation, including semi-quantitative mite scoring and assessment of mite viability, while nine cats were assessed clinically by visual inspection only. At baseline, inflammatory skin lesions and pruritus were present in 16/21 (76.2%) cats, whereas 5/21 (23.8%) were clinic

The role of Demodex mites in the pathogenesis of skin diseases still needs updating. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between Demodex sp. infestation and ocular and skin lesions in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis (PsO). The control group comprised subjects that had not been diagnosed with any inflammatory skin disease. Direct microscopic examination (DME) was applied to analyze eyelashes and skin scraping samples. Demodex mites were detected more often in the eyelash samples than in the skin in both the AD (16.7% vs. 6.7%) and PsO (18.5% vs. 7.4%) patie

BACKGROUND: The reported prevalence and degrees of Demodex mite infestation in rosacea vary widely.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to conduct an evidence-based meta-analysis of the prevalence and degrees of Demodex mite infestation in patients with rosacea.
METHODS: Systematic literature review and meta-analysis were conducted. Odds ratios for prevalence of infestation and standardized mean difference (SMD) for Demodex density in patients with rosacea were pooled. Subgroup analysis for type of rosacea, control group, and sampling and examination methods were also performed.
RESULTS: Twenty-three case

BACKGROUND: Allergic diseases seem less prevalent in communities in less developed parts of the world, where parasite infections are highly prevalent. Altogether not much is known about the association between chronic infections with tissue and blood-dwelling parasites and atopy.
METHODS: In an area in Gabon endemic for blood and tissue parasites, 520 schoolchildren were parasitologically examined and skin prick-tested for a set of common environmental aeroallergens. Levels of allergen-specific IgE and polyclonal IgE were measured.
RESULTS: In schoolchildren schistosome and filarial infectio

Seventy-one percent of rabbits immunized with a mixed (50:50) Dermatophagoides farinae and D. pteronyssinus house dust mite extract were resistant to infestation by Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis. The resistance was evidenced by a marked reduction in parasite load. All immunized hosts developed similar immunogen-specific antibody titers that were independent of the levels of scabies infestation that developed when the hosts were infested with scabies. Resistant hosts exhibited significantly lower scabies-specific immunoglobulin titers and produced antibody to fewer scabies antigens than did nonr

Infestation by Sarcoptes scabiei var. bovis in a farmer is reported. He presented with an intensely itching eruption of erythematous papules on forearm, neck and abdomen. An environmental investigation yielded that four of the farmer's cows had mange. Sarcoptes scabiei var. bovis was isolated from skin-scrapings of the cows. Histology from a self-induced lesion revealed that Sarcoptes scabiei var. bovis penetrates the human skin, but does not--in contrast to var. hominis--form burrows. This finding corresponds with the clinical picture. The mite lies subcorneally, compressing the thinned epide

Northern fowl mites are the most economically important and damaging ectoparasite in the U.S. egg industry. The heterogeneous nature of mite infestation poses a unique welfare challenge; some hens become severely infested and others are more resistant to infestation. This study sought to characterize the relationship between mite infestation level and laying hen welfare parameters. Purebred white laying hens (replicate 1: n = 393 hens; replicate 2: n = 600 hens) were randomly allocated to cage-free floor pens (n = 40 hens/pen; 5 pens/room) in a research facility at 17 wk. Each hen was infested
