A unique variant of Poland-Mobius syndrome with dextrocardia and a 3q23 gain.

The combined Poland and Mobius syndrome occurs rarely and with a wide range of features. There is no consensus on the etiology of this syndrome; familial, sporadic cases and likely environmental insult cases have been reported. This sporadic case represents a unique variant in the spectrum of this syndrome.

Congenital unilateral multiple cranial neuropathy: an etiology shared with Mobius syndrome?

Mobius syndrome was originally described as bilateral 6th and 7th cranial nerve palsy and has since been expanded to include involvement of nearly all cranial nerves, limb deformities, orofacial anomalies and deficits in intellectual function. The etiology of Mobius syndrome remains elusive. Here we present a case with unilateral 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 12th cranial nerve palsy along with MRI evidence of ipsilateral brainstem hypoplasia. We propose the unilateral pathology supports the theory that vascular malformation in utero, which can be due to various etiologies, leads to brainstem ischem

Mobius syndrome: a dental hygiene case study and review of the literature.

Mobius syndrome, a rare, non-progressive, congenital neuromuscular disorder, presents with multiple dental and medical complications. Signs and symptoms of this condition include: congenital, bilateral or unilateral palsies of the facial and abducens cranial nerves (cardinal sign), and a broad scope of multisystem abnormalities, which may or may not include the following: opthalmoplegia externa, lingual palsy, clubfoot, branchial malformation, ptosis, mental retardation, and pectoralis muscle defect. From a dental standpoint, a number of anomalies may manifest, including: multiple congenitally

Mobius syndrome and Poland anomaly: case report and review of the literature.

A 6-year-old boy had the combination of Mobius Syndrome and the Poland anomaly. Although rare, this association is repeatedly encountered. The absence of the pectoral muscle in the Poland anomaly supports the theory that in both conditions the muscular and skeletal abnormalities are due to a common fetal mesodermal defect.

Upper labial deficiency in Mobius syndrome: a previously unreported feature and its correction.

Bilateral facial palsy in Möbius syndrome remains one of the greatest challenges in reconstructive plastic surgery. Facial reanimation is an invaluable aid to such patients because it allows for greater social interaction by means of the ability to smile. In performing facial reanimation surgery on patients with Möbius syndrome, it is the observation of the senior author (Harrison) that upper labial deficiency is a consistent and previously unreported feature of the syndrome. It has been the practice of the senior author to perform upper labial augmentation on Möbius syndrome patients by inser

Labial Incompetence in Mobius Syndrome: LeFort I Impaction Case Report and Review of Management Strategies.

Difficulty with speech intelligibility in Mobius syndrome patients due to bilabial incompetence is common yet rarely discussed. We present a patient with Mobius syndrome who underwent counterclockwise LeFort I impaction to improve her labial competence. In addition, we present a literature review of management strategies for labial incompetence correction in Mobius patients. At 7-year follow-up after LeFort 1 impaction, the patient reports improvement in speech intelligibility, specifically regarding the ability to pronounce bilabial consonants. This is the first published report of LeFort I i

Transfer of the deep temporal nerve for eyelid reconstruction in Mobius syndrome - an anatomic feasibility study and proposed surgical approach.

Facial paralysis may result in significant functional, esthetic, and psychological morbidity. Mobius syndrome is a form of bilateral congenital facial paralysis that is particularly difficult to treat owing to the lack of readily available donor nerves, particularly in the upper face. In this study, we evaluate the feasibility of using the deep temporal nerves as donors for the innervation of free muscle grafts in the periorbital region. Preserved and fresh cadaver facial halves are dissected, and the course of the deep temporal nerves delineated. We find the middle branch of the deep temporal

Twenty-year behavioral follow-up of a 1;13 chromosomal translocation and Mobius syndrome presenting with poor impulse control, exhibitionism, and aggression.

Mobius syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by agenesis or aplasia of the facial or abducens nerve motor nuclei and other features including central nervous system and behavioral abnormalities. We report an adult case of Mobius syndrome variant presenting with poor impulse control, aggression, and exhibitionism. Karyotyping revealed a 46 XY, t(1;13)(p34.3;q12.3) translocation. The subject had been presented 20 years previously as the index case of a three-generation pedigree.

Studies of malformation syndromes of man XXXXI B: nosologic studies in the Hanhart and the Möbius syndrome.

We reviewed etiologic and phenotypic aspects of those orofacial and limb anomalies usually diagnosed as Hanhart syndrome and Mobius syndrome but also those described, among others, under names such as aglossia-adactylia syndrome, gloss-palatine ankylosis, ankyloglossia superior, peromelia and micrognathia, cleft palate/lateral synechiae syndrome, and the Charlie M. syndrome. By coding the degree of severity of the limb defects it was possible to compare these cases quantitatively and to determine the nosologic significance of associated cranial nerve palsies and chest abnormalities. We analyze

The möbius sequence: a relook.

BACKGROUND: The constellations of findings often referred to as Mobius syndrome might be better described as Mobius sequence, because the term sequence defines a cascade of secondary events after an embryonic insult from heterogeneous causes. Classic clinical findings include evidence of sixth and seventh cranial nerve involvement, often with associated malformations of limbs, craniofacial structures, and other cranial nerves. METHODS: A prospective study was undertaken in Sweden of 25 patients who showed characteristic findings of Mobius sequence. RESULTS: Of the patients who did not have s

Clinical correlation of imaging findings in congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders involving abducens nerve.

PURPOSE: High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of intracranial parts of sixth nerve and seventh nerve and the extraocular muscles (EOMs) in orbit to correlate the clinical characteristics in patients with two special forms of strabismus in congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders which are Duane's retraction syndrome (DRS) and Mobius syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Morphological analysis by 3T MRI of orbit (using surface coils) and brain (using 32 channel head coil) was performed on 6 patients with clinical DRS (1 bilateral), 2 cases with Mobius syndrome, and 1 case with congen

Cerebrospinal fluid leakage during dacryocystorhinostomy in a patient with meningoencephalocele.

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of cerebrospinal fluid leakage during dacryocystorhinostomy in a patient with Mobius syndrome and meningoencephalocele and to explain our experience in the management of this complication. METHODS: A 9-year-old girl with a history of surgically repaired fronto-ethmoidal meningoencephalocele and bilateral canthopexy was diagnosed with Mobius syndrome and underwent sequential bilateral dacryocystorhinostomy and silicone intubation because of dysgenesis of the lacrimal drainage pathway. RESULTS: Both dacryocystorhinostomies resulted in cerebrospinal fluid leakage,

Mobius sequence--a Swedish multidiscipline study.

Mobius sequence/syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by congenital palsy of the 6th and 7th cranial nerves. Other cranial nerves may be affected, skeletal and orofacial anomalies and mental retardation occur. The aims were to determine the frequency of associated clinical characteristics and to identify any pregnancy or environmental factors in patients with Mobius sequence. A prospective study of 25 Swedes with apparent involvement of the 6th and 7th cranial nerves was performed and 25 patients, 1 month to 55 years old, were examined. Obvious associated systemic anomalies observed includ

Autism associated with conditions characterized by developmental errors in early embryogenesis: a mini review.

Autism is a complex developmental disorder without an established single etiology but with significant contributions from genetic studies, functional research, and neuropsychiatric and neuroradiologic investigations. The purpose of this paper is to review the findings in five studies involving individuals manifesting the characteristic findings of autism spectrum disorder associated with malformations and dysfunctions known to result from early embryogenic defects. These investigations include two associated with teratogens (thalidomide embryopathy, Mobius sequence with misoprostol) and three

Superior Rectus Transposition Surgery: Safety, Efficacy, and Place in Therapy.

Abduction limitation in esotropic Duane retraction syndrome (DRS), esotropic Mobius syndrome, and sixth nerve palsy is one of the difficult-to-manage problems in strabismus surgery. The procedure of superior rectus transposition (SRT) was introduced by Johnston et al. In this procedure, the superior rectus (SR) muscle is disinserted and sutured adjacent to the insertion of lateral rectus (LR) muscle. The purpose of this review is to explore literature about efficacy and safety of SRT and its usage in strabismus surgery.

Carey-Fineman-Ziter (CFZ) syndrome: report on affected sibs.

We describe a sib pair with craniofacial anomalies, micrognathia, Mobius sequence, generalised myopathy, relative macrocephaly, and developmental delay. They appear to have the Carey-Fineman-Ziter syndrome (MIM 254940), which has been reported in only four children, a sib pair and two sporadic cases. This report on an additional affected brother and sister pair supports autosomal inheritance as the likely cause. These cases also confirm that scoliosis, talipes equinovarus, and a non-specific primary myopathy are important manifestations of Carey-Fineman-Ziter syndrome.
