Predictive estimation of economic outcome changes associated with legal frameworks and public health policy conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Public health policies are implemented within legal and regulatory environments associated with heterogeneous economic and health related outcomes across regions and time. Existing policy evaluation approaches often have limited capacity to represent regional heterogeneity, temporal policy patterns, and uncertainty in observed policy associated outcome changes. To address this issue, this study proposes a predictive computational framework for estimating subsequent economic outcome changes under observed public health policy, legal, and regulatory conditions. METHODS: The empiri

Economic uncertainty shocks and cause-specific mortality.

Economic uncertainty negatively impacts employment and production. However, little is known about the associations between uncertainty shocks and health over time. We employ a time-series econometric model to analyze the propagation patterns of uncertainty shocks on mortality, using daily data from the Economic Policy Uncertainty Index and the UK national death registry. We observe immediate increases in suicide, drug poisoning deaths, and in cardiovascular mortality at weekly horizons. Suicide and drug poisoning deaths rise by up to 2.3%, with the positive association persisting for three wee

National and surgical health care expenditures, 2005-2025.

OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: Health care expenditures for 2005 in the United States were $1.9733 trillion and 15.9% of the gross domestic product (GDP). Twenty-nine percent of those expenditures were secondary to surgical revenues. Health care expenditures are increasing 2(1/2) times the rate of the general US economy and are being fed by new technologies, new medications, the aging population, more services provided per patient, defensive medicine and little tort reform, the insurance system, and the free rider problem, ie, patients are cared for as emergencies regardless of insurance coverage a

In the shadow of a pandemic: Informality and COVID-19 diffusion in Europe.

This article investigates whether the shadow economy influenced the diffusion of COVID-19 during the first wave in Europe. Using a hybrid econometric model and data from 26 European countries, we test the hypothesis that larger informal sectors acted as amplifiers of contagion by weakening compliance with non-pharmaceutical interventions and limiting state enforcement capacity. The results confirm a strong and positive association between shadow economy size and new COVID-19 cases. Each additional 1 % of GDP in the shadow economy corresponds to approximately 0.17 more daily cases per million i

[Healthcare management of an epilepsy clinic: factors involved in the demand for health care and clinical situation of patients].

INTRODUCTION: Epilepsy is a chronic illness that requires a long-term periodic follow-up of the patient and this means that as time goes by the number of patients attended increases, with the ensuing added cost for the healthcare system. AIM: To determine the factors involved in the time until an epileptic patient's next visit. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our sample consisted of a selection of patients who visited the epilepsy clinic at our hospital consecutively during one year. Their clinical situation and relationship with the medical advice they were given, together with the factors involved i

Evaluating costs for onychomycosis treatments: a practitioner's perspective.

Onychomycosis is a common problem. The desired outcome of treatment for patients and clinicians is complete cure (negative culture and negative potassium hydroxide examination results plus a completely normal nail). This cost analysis sought to determine the cost-effectiveness of treatments for onychomycosis using complete cure as a unit of effectiveness. A simplified cost-effectiveness analysis was conducted using complete cure rates from randomized, blinded clinical trials involving at least 50 participants. Trials were identified by searching the literature, manually searching for review ar

Breast cancer patients' perceptions of safety: insights from the Italian NHS.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused an unprecedented demand for immediate and far-reaching organizational change. In this context, oncological care experienced delays and routine service disruption, significantly impacting patients' outcomes. Using a unique dataset with two data sources, 366 oncological patients and 68 Breast Unit team leaders in the Italian National Health Service, this study analyzes healthcare organizational characteristics and the role of transferred perceptions of care safety among patients with breast cancer during the Covid 19 pandemic. We used quantitative methods building sp

Healthcare expenditures and economic growth: evidence via panel local projections.

This study investigates the elasticity of healthcare expenditures (HCE) with respect to income growth using a balanced panel of 177 economies from 2001 to 2020. Applying a panel local projections (LP) model, we examine both global and heterogeneous effects across income groups, as defined by the World Bank income classification. The model is further extended to estimate the relationship between income and HCE during changing economic conditions. Accordingly, we find that the elasticity weakens during non-expansionary periods, while high-income countries exhibit a minimal contemporaneous respon

Time to death and the forecasting of macro-level health care expenditures: some further considerations.

Although the effect of time to death (TTD) on health care expenditures (HCE) has been investigated using individual level data, the most profound implications of TTD have been for the forecasting of macro-level HCE. Here we estimate the TTD model using macro-level data from the Netherlands consisting of mortality rates and age- and gender-specific per capita health expenditures for the years 1981-2007. Forecasts for the years 2008-2020 of this macro-level TTD model were compared to forecasts that excluded TTD. Results revealed that the effect of TTD on HCE in our macro model was similar to tho

Cost drivers for voluntary medical male circumcision using primary source data from sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: As voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) programs scale up, there is a pressing need for information about the important cost drivers, and potential efficiency gains. We examine those cost drivers here, and estimate the potential efficiency gains through an econometric model. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We examined the main cost drivers (i.e., personnel and consumables) associated with providing VMMC in sub-Saharan Africa along a number of dimensions, including facility type and service provider. Primary source facility level data from Kenya, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda

COVID-19, ESG investing, and the resilience of more sustainable stocks: Evidence from European firms.

Following the COVID-19 outbreak, orientation toward sustainability is a critical factor in ensuring firm survival and growth. Using a large sample of 1,204 firms in Europe during the year 2020, this study investigates how more sustainable firms fare during the pandemic compared with other firms in terms of risk-return trade-off and stock market liquidity. We also highlight the drivers of the resilience of more sustainable firms to the pandemic. Particularly, we document that higher levels of cash holdings and liquid assets in the pre-COVID period help these firms to perform and absorb the COVI

From shadow to sustainability: How informality, environmental taxes, and green innovation reshape carbon and biodiversity futures in the G7 countries.

The shadow economy remains a blind spot in climate-and-biodiversity policy. However, its interaction with fiscal and technological forces can significantly affect the success or failure of sustainability transitions. We propose a novel integrated framework that combines econometric models with deep learning to examine the role of the shadow economy, environmental taxes and green innovation on consumption-based CO2 emissions and biodiversity in the G7 countries. Using data from 1994 to 2020, the study employs Cross-sectionally Autoregressive Distributed-lag (CS-ARDL) and Fully Modified Ordinary

Does energy transition reduce carbon inequality? A global analysis.

Energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables is instrumental in mitigating climate change. Low-income countries have a higher share of renewable energy in their total energy consumption than rich countries (WDI, 2023). Thus, it is imperative to examine the role of energy transition in affecting relative CO2 emissions between rich and poor sections of the societies across income groups of the countries. In this context, our study contributes by constructing the carbon inequality models with renewable and non-renewable energy consumption as prime explanatory variables separately for 114 cou

Macroeconomic and monetary policy responses in selected highly indebted MENA countries post Covid 19: A structural VAR approach.

With limited fiscal space, MENA governments with flexible exchange rates have been relying extensively on accommodative monetary policy to circumvent external shocks such as Covid 19 and other domestic macroeconomic imbalances. Other MENA countries with high debt levels and fixed exchange rates are not able to use conventional monetary policy effectively. We use a battery of econometric models to identify domestic and external nominal shocks affecting the MENA region and their dynamic transmission mechanisms through impulse response functions and granger causality tests derived from a structur

Effect of structural economic transformation on the environment: Insights on transition from goods-based to service-based economies in OECD countries.

Over the past century, the shift from a goods-based to a service-based economy has been profound, especially in developed nations. This paper examines the impact of this transition on CO2 emissions. Using panel data econometric models with fixed and random effects for 23 OECD countries from 1990 to 2022, this study estimates the impact of Cost Disease as an indicator of this transformation on CO2 emissions. The results indicate that Cost Disease has a positive and statistically significant impact on CO2 emissions in both fixed and random effects models. Notably, a 1% increase in Cost Disease i
