Hypomineralized primary teeth and their association with Molar Incisor Hypomineralization: a cross-sectional study.

Environmental and systemic factors play a role in the development of hypomineralization characterized by demarcated opacities. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, distribution, severity, and etiologic factors associated with hypomineralization in all primary teeth, hypomineralized second primary molars (HSPM) and evaluate its association with Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH). A sample of 2,102 male and female Brazilian children aged 3 to 10 years exhibiting good general health was examined by 30 calibrated dentists using WHO probes and clinical mirrors, using the index propos

Hypersensitivity in teeth affected by molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH).

Tooth hypersensitivity is a common symptom in patients with molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH). Therefore, this clinical study aimed to assess potential associations between patient- and tooth-related variables and the intensity of hypersensitivity in MIH-affected permanent teeth compared to healthy controls. Fifty-seven MIH patients and 20 healthy adolescents with a total of 350 MIH-affected and 193 healthy teeth were included in this study. The intensity of hypersensitivity was measured after cold air stimulation using the Schiff Cold Air Sensitivity Scale (SCASS) by the dentist and visu

Respiratory diseases are associated with molar-incisor hypomineralizations.

The objective of our study was to evaluate the association of molar-incisor hypomineralizations (MIHs) with prospectively collected potential causative factors from the first 4 years of life, e.g. respiratory diseases, breastfeeding, maternal smoking and parental education. A total of 692 children (10 years old) from the GINI birth cohort study participated. The dental examination included the registration of enamel hypomineralizations (EHs) according to the EAPD criteria. Children with EH were sub-categorized into those with at least one EH (MIH/1), those with a minimum of one EH on at least

Why orthodontists need to know about molar incisor hypomineralization.

Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a systemic developmental qualitative defect of the enamel that affects 1-4 first permanent molars with or without incisor involvement. Enamel hypomineralization is identified visually as a demarcated opacity with a clear border with varying extensions and can be white, yellow, or brown. This opacity is characterized by a reduced quality of enamel that is of normal thickness but not fully mineralized. It is very common for the affected teeth to present with posteruptive breakdown, making them susceptible to caries, leading to their subsequent loss. Thus

Saliva proteomic patterns in patients with molar incisor hypomineralization.

Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is an endemic pediatric disease with an unclear pathogenesis. Considering that saliva controls enamel remineralization and that MIH is associated with higher saliva flow rate, we hypothesized that the protein composition of saliva is linked to disease. To test this, we enrolled 5 children aged 6-14 years with MIH showing at least one hypersensitive molar and 5 caries-free children without hypomineralization. Saliva samples were subjected to proteomic analysis followed by protein classification in to biological pathways. Among 618 salivary proteins identif

Factors associated with molar incisor hypomineralization in Thai children.

Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a qualitative developmental enamel defect that affects one to four permanent first molars, with or without involvement of permanent incisors. Its etiology is of systemic origin, but is not well understood. Therefore, we conducted this cross-sectional study to examine pre-, peri-, and postnatal risk factors for MIH among children, 7-8 yr of age, in urban areas of Khon Kaen, Thailand. Molar incisor hypomineralization defects were diagnosed using the European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry criteria. Mothers or primary caregivers were interviewed on matern

Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH): clinical presentation, aetiology and management.

In this paper, the current knowledge about Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) is presented. MIH is defined as hypomineralization of systemic origin of one to four permanent first molars frequently associated with affected incisors and these molars are related to major clinical problems in severe cases. At the moment, only limited data are available to describe the magnitude of the phenomenon. The prevalence of MIH in the different studies ranges from 3.6-25% and seems to differ in certain regions and birth cohorts. Several aetiological factors (for example, frequent childhood diseases) are

Association of Molar Incisor Hypomineralization with Hypomineralized Second Primary Molars: An Updated Systematic Review with a Meta-Analysis and Trial Sequential Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: There is a correlation between molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) and hypomineralized second primary molars (HSPM), but this relationship has not been definitively confirmed. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to reevaluate whether children with HSPM are more affected by MIH than non-HSPM children. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in four databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library) for literature, published up to December 2022. Two independent reviewers conducted the study search and screening, quality assessment, a

Glass Ionomer Cement Restoration Technique for Severe Molar Incisor Hypomineralization.

The management of molar-incisor hypomineralization is challenging as the clinical appearance and individual need for treatment vary widely, with a broad spectrum of treatment modalities available. The purpose of this report is to describe the treatment of an affected, carious permanent molar using glass ionomer cement (GIC) and an occlusal replica technique. An alginate impression of the mandibular arch was done and a partial diagnostic cast was fabricated, followed by diagnostic waxing and a silicone guide. Conventional GIC was used to fill the silicone impression, which was placed on the too
