Phosphate limitation enhances malic acid production on nitrogen-rich molasses with Ustilago trichophora.

BACKGROUND: An important step in replacing petrochemical products with sustainable, cost-effective alternatives is the use of feedstocks other than, e.g., pure glucose in the fermentative production of platform chemicals. Ustilaginaceae offer the advantages of a wide substrate spectrum and naturally produce a versatile range of value-added compounds under nitrogen limitation. A promising candidate is the dicarboxylic acid malic acid, which may be applied as an acidulant in the food industry, a chelating agent in pharmaceuticals, or in biobased polymer production. However, fermentable residue s

Beet Molasses Enhance Salinity Tolerance in Thymus serpyllum-A Study under Greenhouse Condition.

The growing demand for Thymus serpyllum biomass to produce drugs, cosmetics and spices necessitates the search for innovative methods mitigating the negative effects of environmental stressors in order to improve its yield under unfavorable conditions. Due to the exposure of plants to salinity stress (SS), we investigated the effect of sugar beet molasses (SBM) on the growth and biochemical parameters related to plants' response to SS. Wild thyme plants were treated for 5 weeks to sodium chloride and 3% molasses solution using two modes of application (soil irrigation or foliar sprays). Plants

Soy molasses as fermentation substrate for production of butanol using Clostridium beijerinckii BA101.

Spray-dried soy molasses (SDSM) contains the sugars dextrose, sucrose, fructose, pinitol, raffinose, verbascose, melibiose, and stachyose. Of the 746 g kg(-1) total sugars in SDSM, 434 g kg(-1) is fermentable using Clostridium beijerinckii BA101. SDSM was used to produce acetone, butanol, and ethanol (ABE) by C. beijerinckii BA101 in batch cultures. Using 80 g l(-1) SDSM, 10.7 g l(-1) ABE was produced in P2 medium. Higher concentrations of SDSM resulted in poor solvent production due to the presence of excessive salt and inhibitory components. C. beijerinckii BA101 in SDSM at 80 g l(-1) concen

Study on the effect of Cr(VI) removal by stimulating indigenous microorganisms using molasses.

Molasses have a prominent effect on the bioremediation of Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater. However, its reaction mechanism is not detailed. In this paper, the removal of Cr(VI) with different carbon sources was compared to explore the effect and mechanism of the molasses. The addition of molasses can completely remove 25 mg/L Cr(VI), while the removal efficiency by glucose or emulsified vegetable oil was only 20%. Molasses could rapidly stimulate the reduction of Cr(VI) by indigenous microorganisms and weakened the toxicity on bacteria. The average removal rate of Cr(VI) was 0.42 mg/L·h, 10 ti

Production of 2,3-butanediol from corncob molasses, a waste by-product in xylitol production.

Corncob molasses, a waste by-product in xylitol production, contains high concentrations of mixed sugars. In the present study, corncob molasses was used to produce 2,3-butanediol (BD) using Klebsiella pneumoniae SDM. This was the first report on the use of corncob molasses to produce bulk chemicals. Our results indicated that K. pneumoniae SDM can utilize various sugars contained in the corncob molasses in a preferential manner: glucose > arabinose > xylose. It was shown that high sugars concentration had an inhibitory effect on the cells growth and BD production. The maximum concentration of

B-vitamin supplementation unlocks DHA production of Aurantiochytrium limacinum on molasses-based fermentation residue.

Various marine protists inhabiting high-salinity environments can convert organic nutrients into high-value biomolecules or biomass, making them suitable agents for valorizing saline organic residue from fermentation waste streams, such as condensed molasses fermentation solubles (CMS). This study established a screening method to identify mixotrophic or heterotrophic marine protists suitable for CMS valorization and to assess their bioconversion potential. Growth-performance and nutrient-replacement assays were evaluated based on relative colony coverage on agar plates and final cell density

Decolorization and semi-batch continuous treatment of molasses distillery wastewater by Aspergillus tubingensis DCT6.

Large quantities of deeply pigmented molasses distillery wastewater (MDW), are discharged during the production of bio-ethanol from molasses. Conventional biological wastewater treatment is not effective in removing the molasses pigments. In the present study, a MDW treatment system was developed with combination treatment involving biodecolorization and biotreatment by Aspergillus tubingensis DCT6, together with physical decolorization by ozonation after treatment by activated sludge. A. tubingensis DCT6, which was isolated from soil, decolorized 44% of the pigments in MDW without adding any

Cane molasses and oligofructose in the diet of laying hens improves the mineral content of eggs and meat.

Poultry-based foods contribute to human health due to their high nutrient value. Previously, it was shown that short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by in vitro intestinal fermentation of a molasses and oligofructose mixture (M-O) stimulated iron and calcium transport through the colonic epithelium of laying hens. However, the real impact of including M-O mixture in the diet on the mineral content of poultry products had not yet been demonstrated. In this study, Hy-Line W-36 leghorn hens were assigned into two groups that either received a conventional diet or a diet supplemented with cane

Coproduction of single cell protein and pyrroloquinoline quinone by Hyphomicrobium denitrificans using molasses and biogas slurry.

Single cell protein (SCP) is an important supplement to animal protein feed, and pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is frequently used as a functional food and animal feed ingredient. In this study, we aimed to coproduce SCP and PQQ through the fermentation of molasses and biogas slurry by Hyphomicrobium denitrificans SSWJ1 (H. denitrificans SSWJ1). We evaluated the tolerance of H. denitrificans SSWJ1 to alkaline conditions, revealing optimal growth at pH 8, and compared the SCP amounts synthesized in molasses and biogas slurry media (2.0 g/L) and in methanol and ammonium sulfate media (0.7 g/L).

Anaerobic digestion of soybean molasses: comparison between single and two-stage systems, operational temperature and microbial communities.

Soybean molasses is an abundant, low-value by-product of soy protein concentrate production whose valorization through anaerobic digestion remains little explored, and no two-stage system has yet been reported for this substrate. This study evaluated methane production in a methanogenic anaerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactor fed with the effluent of a thermophilic acidogenic reactor treating soybean molasses, assessing the influence of applied organic loading rate (4-12 kg-COD/m3/d) and operational temperature (30 or 55 °C) on performance, stability, and microbial community structure. Antioxidative activity of fractionated melanoidin-like product from molasses and its application in phytodesalination through oilseed rape.

This study initially focuses on the fractionation of a melanoidin-like product (MLP) from sugarcane molasses and its antioxidant properties. The radical scavenging activities of the fractionated MLP were evaluated based on methanol concentration used during fractionation. Higher methanol concentrations enhanced the antioxidant capacity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and superoxide anion radicals. Additionally, a phytodesalination experiment using oilseed rape was conducted under varying MLP, NaCl, and artificial seawater concentrations. Results showed that the oilseed rape increased sup
