Molecular characterization of Echinococcus granulosus in a hyperendemic European focus, the Republic of Moldova.

Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonosis caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. The lifecycle of the parasite is mainly domestic, requiring dogs as definitive hosts and livestock species as intermediate hosts. Although human cystic echinococcosis is a high public health priority in the Republic of Moldova, the rare animal data available concerns only infection in cattle. A preliminary slaughterhouse survey was conducted to assess prevalence and perform the first molecular characterization of E. granulosus sensu lato in sheep and cattle. For the survey, 40 sheep and 19 cattle wer

Epidemiology of hepatitis C in the Republic of Moldova: achievements and remaining challenges in prevention and control.

Viral hepatitis, especially those with parenteral and sexual transmission, still remain a major problem of public health, both globally and for the Republic of Moldova, due to wide spreading, endemicity, increased morbidity and mortality and high rate of invalidity following the chronization of infection, but usually neglected by population and public health authorities. This paper describes the epidemiology and preventive and control measures of hepatitis C in Moldova. Epidemiological analysis of the surveillance data on hepatitis C incidence in the Republic of Moldova was conducted. The data

Injections given in healthcare settings as a major source of acute hepatitis B in Moldova.

BACKGROUND: Reported rates of acute hepatitis B are high in many former Soviet Union republics and modes of transmission are not well defined. METHODS: Two case-control studies were undertaken in Moldova to identify risk factors for acute hepatitis B in people aged 2-15 years (children) and > or =15 years (adults). Serologically confirmed acute hepatitis B cases occurring between 1 January 1994 and 30 August 30 1995, were matched on age, sex, and district of residence to three potential controls who were tested for hepatitis B markers to exclude the immune. Stratified odds ratios (SOR) were c

Pattern of primary tuberculosis drug resistance and associated treatment outcomes in Transnistria, Moldova.

This cohort study assessed drug susceptibility testing (DST) patterns and associated treatment outcomes from Transnistria, Moldova, from 2009 to 2012. Of 1089 newly registered tuberculosis (TB) patients with available DST results, 556 (51%) had some form of drug resistance, while 369 (34%) had multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB). There were four cases of extensively drug-resistant TB. MDR-TB patients had poor treatment success (45%); human immunodeficiency virus positivity and a history of incarceration were associated with an unfavourable treatment outcome. This first study from Trans-nistria sho

Cesarean delivery in a tertiary institution of the Republic of Moldova: analysis using the Robson classification.

BACKGROUND: The worldwide increase in the cesarean delivery rate is a major public health concern and cause of significant debate. Although multiple studies have shown that higher cesarean delivery rates may be associated with adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes, the number of cesarean deliveries has been continuously increasing. In the Republic of Moldova, cesarean delivery increased from 15.75% in 2012 to 27.42% in 2022. However, the perinatal mortality remained unchanged at 11.6%. To understand the factors that determine the increasing trend in cesarean delivery and to approach new stra

An epidemiological survey of Dirofilaria spp. and Acanthocheilonema spp. in dogs from the Republic of Moldova.

BACKGROUND: During the last decades, filarial infections caused by Dirofilaria spp. have spread rapidly within dog populations of several European countries. Increasing scientific interest in filariasis, and the availability of new diagnostic tools, has led to improved knowledge of the biology, morphology, and epidemiology of different species of filarial worms. However, data are still scarce for a number of countries, including the Republic of Moldova. Thus, we assessed the epidemiological status of canine filariasis in the Republic of Moldova to address part of this knowledge gap. METHODS:

Parts Unknown: Risk Factors of Intimate Partner Violence in Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Moldova.

Extant research has argued that there are variations in predictors of intimate partner violence (IPV) across nations and it is necessary to examine country-specific correlates of IPV. Much remains unknown about factors that affect risk of IPV in transitional countries. Specifically, we explore risk factors for IPV among four former nations of the Soviet Union-Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Moldova-with data from the nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys. Rates of physical abuse were similar within Tajikistan (18.96%) and Moldova (18.38%), while Kyrgyzstan (20.62%) h

Food security of people with celiac disease in the Republic of Moldova through prism of public policies.

Food security is an important lever for the implementation of rights-based legislation, policies, and programs, while being a public health and socio-economic priority. Foodborne illnesses have a major impact on public health, and nutritional interventions are essential therapeutic strategies to combat them. Gluten ingestion has been linked to several clinical disorders, collectively called gluten-related disorders. The most serious of these is celiac disease. The only way to treat celiac disease is to stick to a gluten-free diet for life. Following a strict diet is also the only way to preven

Phlebotomine sand fly survey in the Republic of Moldova: species composition, distribution and host preferences.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodiae) in the Republic of Moldova have been understudied for decades. Our study provides a first update on their occurrence, species composition and bloodmeal sources after 50 years. METHODS: During 5 seasons (2013-2017), 58 localities from 20 regions were surveyed for presence of sand flies using CDC light traps and manual aspirators. Species identification was done by a combination of morphological and molecular approaches (DNA barcoding, MALDI-TOF MS protein profiling). In engorged females, host blood was identified by three molecular tech

Newborn Screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy in the Republic of Moldova: A Feasibility Study and First Steps.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a severe neuromuscular disorder in which presymptomatic treatment substantially improves survival and motor outcomes, yet newborn screening for SMA remains unevenly implemented across Europe, and evidence from lower-resource health systems is needed to guide scale-up. In this study, we assessed the feasibility, diagnostic performance, and public health implications of implementing neonatal SMA screening in the Republic of Moldova within an established national newborn screening framework. A pilot genetic screening program was conducted using dried blood spot (D

Hepatitis B and C infections among lymphoma patients: a national study in the Republic of Moldova.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) represent common infections that are presumably associated with various types of lymphoma and specific clinical features. However, conclusive data are lacking and results from different regional studies are conflicting. Hence, a national study was performed in order to investigate potential associations between hepatitis infections and lymphoma in the Republic of Moldova. METHODOLOGY: Data were collected from newly diagnosed adult lymphoma patients from January 2020 to January 2022. Patients who were not tested for HBsAg and an
